Current Talk '09 II / Re: Lara Parker's Upcoming DS Book
« on: December 24, 2009, 07:11:54 PM »
Joeytrom, she spoke about her next book at this year's Fest.  Here's one mention of it:

Lara gave more info about her third DS novel, which includes several plotlines, including a flashback back to the 1920's and Flapper Liz, that might be interesting

Maybe someone who was present for her talk can provide more details.

David sent along this page, on which a gay writer's pop culture blog asks 6 DS trivia questions:

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Barnabas Collins

Megan to the druggist:  "This is Mrs. Todd from the antique shop down the street."
So as to distinguish it from the nameless generic antique shop up the street.

Chris to Julia:  "Then I'm really a Collins."
And Carolyn is my... ewwww!  (I know, just 3rd cousins, but still...)

Julia to Chris:  "The curse started with Quentin, yes, and then it was intended to go on to the eldest son in each succeeding generation."
Retconning, sigh

Megan to Philip:  "It WAS my fault about the book being missing."
Sexist Leviathan programming!!

Paul (thinking):  "The mark of the cairn!"
And yet, he didn't notice the same symbol around Megan's neck?  She was even fondling it while they were talking and passing notes!
(Isn't a cairn a pointy pile of stones?)

"There is no margin for error. Punishment is necessary."
Bill Gates was a DS fan?

"The waters shall nourish" poem must be important since David is the 4th character to recite it.
how do you nourish grains of sand?
The ocean does, apparently.  But I'm positing, based on Leviathan as sea creature.  Humanity is as impermanent as a sandy shore, while the great Old Ones ("wedged between the sacred ancient stones") aren't destroyed by the tides but flourish once the ancient creature has made the way for them.  It's the theme of "The Call of Cthulu."

My understanding is that TCoC was long considered unfilmable by its fans until recently when some Lovecraft devotees made it using stop-action and other sfx.  And here we have DS, a low-budget soap, taking a run at it 40 years ago.  Highly ambitious, and oh-so insane.  I'm guessing (!!) that lots of "Are you nuts?" and "If you can't do it, I'll get somebody who can" came out of the writers' meetings around that time, though these are G-rated versions.

Why doesn't Barnabas out Chris?   Maybe that would be too disruptive to the whole situation, but it would separate Carolyn from him.
Not necessarily.  Carolyn might feel sorry for Chris.
Yeah, if hearing that the HOT man she'd fallen for is emotionally unstable, dangerous, out of control and a monster isn't enough to scare her away, then learning that he was cursed would probably just make him more attractive.  At least that's what happened to little Midnite after she was introduced to Quentin Collins in 1969.  Sigh.

Marie Wallace was so good, she scored separate listings in the credits for her characters.

David reads from the ancient book:  "And then those who have been hidden so long shall rise and show themselves and the others will know their time is ended and the time of the people of the Leviathan will begin."
And here is a quote from H.P. Lovecraft as it appears in a preface to a couple of his stories in Great Tales of Horror and the Supernatural:  "'All my stories,' he once wrote, 'unconnected as they may be, are based on the fundamental lore or legend that this world was inhabited at one time by another race who, in practicing black magic, lost their foothold and were expelled, yet live on outside, ever ready to take possession of this earth again.'"
It can't be said that Violet Wells didn't do her homework.

Julia's chin is sporting a Band-Aid.

AT LAST the tall foyer lights have modern lightbulbs again.

Carolyn blew her line?--
C:  "Julia, what do you think is the matter with her?"
J:  "With her? With the baby?"
C:  "Both of them, I would say."

Why wasn't Amy affected when she looked at the open book?

Henesy might be playing David as childish so that we can tell more clearly when he's possessed by adults.
I like that.  I was thinking what's the difference in his behaviors?, but yeah, brainwashed David is mean, not bratty.  Thanks!

This is a weird one.  We're told that David and Carolyn are "pieces in an awesome puzzle," yet what we get from him are brattiness and spite, and from his cousin-- an apparent unwillingness to share her father with her mother and a preoccupation with curtains.  The voiceovers repeat that a horrific evil threatens the family, yet their conflicts seem to be the stuff of standard soap fare.  Yet at the same time, the proprietors of the village shop are literally being terrorized.

David:  "I snitched it."
Did we really say that back then?

Swaddling a feverish baby in a wool blanket?  That's about as brilliant as letting a vitally important book lie around where strangers come and go, or leaving the upstairs room (that you promised to keep hidden from prying eyes) unlocked and unguarded.

Maggie's redoing the cottage?  What cottage?  Will she live there?
The cottage that she and Pop occupied.  There are renters in it now.

At cairn... Philip:  "I've been this way a dozen times."   On fire?!
Snort.

"Log baby"... suddenly we're in Twin Peaks!
The Nagas are not what they seem!
Ha!

Actually we did get a brief look at the chair at the Old House, but I forget which episode.
As Lydia said, it's this one.  Philip carries it downstairs and sets it down in the Old House foyer.
