It's been a while since I've seen eps with dead Davenport, but I'm remembering that his story resembles the Voudou mythology of the sorcerer reviving a corpse with its spirit remaining tied to the dead body.  Once reanimated, the zombie is under the sorcerer's control, its spirit imprisoned and its mind devoid of free will.

Did you know that Zombi is the name of a powerful voodoo snake god?

This is also the ep with the opening voiceover that was rarely seen in US syndication and never seen nor heard on the Sci Fi Channel, so original fans who wanted to see it again had to wait til MPI released it.

Was David H. really hurt or was it just part of the role!??

He really did break his leg-- a skiing accident.

Please don't ask me why, but during the first conversation in which "understand" was tossed back and forth, I started counting the number of times the word was used and got up to 9.  Apparently Gordon Russell's understanding (!) of why the Leviathan plot has started to crumble mostly has to do with whether or not the followers understand. ::)

But he did write a passable internal dialogue for Barnabas:  "Everything is getting out of hand. I'm losing control. I must find a way out of this. But how? Why is it there are moments when I doubt everything I'm doing, and other times when I'm convinced the cause is so right? How did I get to be this way? It began when I opened the box-- the Leviathan box. I surrendered my will. I can't go on this way, seeing people hurt, people I've known and loved. I must find the strength to fight this. I need time. I must stall everything until I find the answer."
I take back everything I've said in the past about Barnabas' reversion to good guy having been badly handled because it's totally making sense with this viewing.

Michael is diabolical in using Maggie's terror and sleep deprivation (both of which he caused in the first place) to set Philip up!

Flashlights, people.  Flashlights!  Hey, did anyone have a Navy p-coat too like Philip's or Michael's?

I wonder if a part we didn't see during Michael's overnight stay was of him sneaking into Carolyn's room and... nevermind, I don't even want to think about it.

The female Leviathan followers have more staying power than the male ones.

DS and its 1960s sensibilities were nothing if not sexist.  Thank the gods for what they did with Julia in this storyline.

Maggie demonstrates the perils of very short 70s hemlines as she bangs frantically on the secret panel door, lifting her green Junior Sophisticates dress and exposing her bum.

Lydia, I'm assuming that the maze of pathways in and beneath Collinwood probably do connect up.  If I were searching a big house for a young and healthy someone, I'd probably stop short of searching every nook and cranny and locked door, not to mention "secret" areas.

When Michael had his hissy fit, you could see that the flip side of the made-up "Wall Street" was a red and black backgammon board, which would have made it valuable today to a collector of vintage {sob!} game boards had they not glued a picture to one side of it.

Why is the Leviathan box left out in the open in the antique shop?
With the key sticking out of it!

If a shoplifter walked out with it, what would happen to him?
Maybe shoplifting has been kept to a minimum by the loaded gun that a proprietor keeps in her desk?

And if Megan opened it up and shoved it in Philip's face, would all his doubts about the Leviathan cause vanish?
Hmm, I think Philip probably has too many doubts and concerns at this point for that to work.  Apparently Michael can hypnotize with a stroke of his hand, same as Barnabas, but I'm guessing that would only work on highly susceptible subjects, such as children (Amy) and the very gung ho (Megan).  But Michael has already made his mind up that he wants Philip dead anyway.

At the beginning of this, with Maggie being tormented, I had "Every Breath You Take" going through my head....   She calls out to David to ask if he's doing all this... you mean hyperventilating into a loudspeaker?   David does that?
LOL  The voiceover called the sound "unnnatural," but it feels plausible for Maggie to first suspect it's a prank by the one kid she knows is in the house with her.

I'm with Magnus that the Todds' conflicts make for great stuff!!

Current Talk '10 I / EW's List of Soaps Loved and Lost
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:59:56 PM »
From December, 2009.  Better late than never?

13 Soap Operas We've Loved, Lost

I'll forgive Entertainment Weekly for its use of the c-word since they again used the photo of Liz, Roger and Vicki instead of a stock pic of Barnabas, and for the comparison to Lost, too.

[Hmm, I didn't know "DiNozzo" (Michael Weatherly) was on Loving.]

I just noticed this follow up to the original list:

17 All-Time Great Cult TV Shows You Say We Missed

DS, ST, The Avengers, etc.-- now that's more like it.

Also included, er, not-included-but-acknowledged-after-fans-pointed-out-the-omission is Adrian Paul's Highlander series.

A friend mentioned that Dan Aykroyd and Margot Kidder used it on SNL in 1979, which was news to me.  I couldn't find it as a vid, but a transcript of their skit makes it easier to find anyway:

Sky, do you really believe that a woman would want a painter to make her portrait appear old?
Sky:  "He even painted it on an old canvas."
Um, maybe it's time you accept that your wife is a bit older than she lets on.

Okay, so Angelique's plane landed on time, she's on the boat, and she'll be at the house in 20 minutes.  What happened to the 7 1/2 minutes?

Angelique:  "I have everything in the world I want."
Julia:  "Do you indeed?"
Snort.

Michael and David play "Wall Street" with Monopoly money and a game board with imaginary squares.  And why is that the games that children make up on DS are always very bad for the adults?

Angelique:  "I'm deceiving him already. The influence of Collinwood."
"Blame Collinwood," sung to the tune of Blame Canada

Michael Maitland is already SUCH a better actor than Geoffrey Scott!!!!!!!

I wish she had called Megan and Philip to make sure it was OK for Michael to spend time with a sick kid.  They would have said yes (and Megan would have acted as though Maggie was crazy for asking) but Maggie didn't know that.

Heh, Maggie didn't seem to care that Michael might catch David's cold, only that David might get worse from being "overheated" (and what a silly term that was!).
