Whatever was present in Julia's genetic code that made her resistant, apparently [spoiler]Maggie[/spoiler] had it too.  Maybe the Collinses should consider having children with these women?  [cheesyb]

MT, it was during the buildup to his actually being bitten.  I was being a [smrtasy], sorry.

Woo hoo, MB!  I wondered if that's what you meant, but I wasn't sure when it came up.

Wonderful comments, all!

Lots of very neat dialogue by Sam Hall, and action nicely choreographed so that Carolyn keeps missing all the incriminating stuff.  Chris Pennock continues to stumble with his lines, but I think he fared better during the charged exchanges.  At this point, Jeb IS cleverer than his enemies, so his smugness felt more tolerable.  And I especially liked that he seemed to scoff at Quentin's suggestion that he spent time in hell (Jeb: "You think that's where I've been?").  The Leviathans, after all, existed long before Christianity got its start, which makes them forces of darkness that preceded Diabolos.  But I don't recall all the details of the hooded guy's involvement down the road, so my opinion on that could change.  Overall, I enjoyed the ep, but with one exception:
Barnabas to Jeb:  "You cannot let Philip die for what you have done."
In that entire century, Maine did not have a death penalty.  So WTH?

Also unfortunate-- despite what they say, I'm not seeing sexual chemistry between Jeb and Carolyn.  Before they kiss, you can almost see the actor thinking okay, I said my line so now I kiss her...

A blooper-- a camera pokes into view during a drawing room scene

Carolyn speaks on the phone to the new Collinsport sheriff, and she tells him, "You must call in a psychiatrist or something."
The Soup could dedicate an entire segment to that called Carolyn Stoddard, Unlikely Voice of Reason.

Barnabas to the Spirits, at the cairn:  "Know that ... my days will be spent ridding my world of the Leviathans."
Er, nights.  ;)

Only 4 actors in the ep, plus the poor schmuck who had to play dead under a trenchcoat.

Jeb implies he knows Q's old....?

Hmm.  In the last ep Amy had the dream, and afterward she told Jeb that the ghost looked identical to Quentin and that he knew about Jeb even though his storyline got bypassed completely by him.  So what Jeb knows now must've been tied to that in some way.  Somehow.  (??)

Meg's a heavy sleeper...

Ha!  Whoever wrote Jeb's tale of waking Megan to give her a sedative must have spent time in a hospital.  :P

So Jeb and Carolyn marry, then what?  How does a wedding unleash the Leviathans upon the world?

When Barnabas spoke about ridding his world of the Leviathans, were the writers implying that they also exist in another world or dimension, so that what happens in the wedding ceremony would open the way for them to enter ours?  Or am I reading too much into the wording?

Love it, Gothick.

According to their biographies, both Thayer David and Fred Gwynne were members of the Brattle Theatre Company in Cambridge (TD was a founding member).  Here's an online review of a play they did with the company in 1951:

Ah, The Swap is online--a single vid but with ads.  The DS actors are listed in the opening credits as Jerry Micky and Terrayne Crawford.

Guthrie was too independent for his own good.

In the Inspector's own words, the first two murders had unusual aspects, yet Philip has now formally confessed despite there not being a lick of evidence that he committed them.  But I suppose it's a discussion better left til later.

Since Michael Hackett obviously could not have been any relation of Buzz's, and James Blair wouldn't have been related to Nicholas, I'm guessing that we're not supposed to infer any familial ties between Lawrence and Dr. Peter Guthrie.

Carolyn to Amy, who is too frightened to speak with Quentin:  "There's not a reason in the world not to talk to him."
Quentin:  "No, Amy. There's not a reason in the world."
Not in this world, anyway.  ::)

Was this the final appearance of Quentin's ghost?

Inspector Guthrie had a nice early Sixties look to him, I thought.  He seemed like sort of a lightweight, which may have been part and parcel of that nice early Sixties look.

Using his performances in Sam's Song (made the year before he was on DS) and The Swap (which added new scenes of him as the same character that were filmed 10 years later) as a reference, I really appreciate the acting he did on DS.  As Andrew, he's the polar opposite of Guthrie-- he's smarmy and privileged, and he makes no secret of having the hots for the girlfriend of Robert DeNiro's character (the Sam in the first title), eventually dumping his wife for her, which I'm guessing is the part of the plot that inspired the 2nd title.  I won't even get into why Andrew is revealed to be gay in the 2nd movie, but whatever.  Anyway, The Swap is dreadful, but I think DS fans should see it, though that's mostly because DeNiro's gal is played by Terry Crawford.  It's also the movie in which she got topless, if you care about that.

In the reshoot of the scene with Jeb at the graveyard, I liked his wicked smile when the bat showed up.

Barnabas:  "Who else is here?"
Julia:  "There's no one in the house but Maggie."
Barnabas:  "Good. Her psychic strength can help us."
Okay, she was available and sympathetic to the cause, but where did this notion of Maggie having "psychic strength" come from?  But anyway, by channeling Josette during a seance, Maggie has now replaced Vicki in every way. [sadb]

How to Lose a Girl in 10 Words:
Jeb to Carolyn:  "I want you to love me, want me, need me."
She was down with that.
Jeb:  "...be with me, think of me, and dream of me."
She seemed okay with it til he got to the dream of me part
Jeb:  "I told Bruno ... we'd meet him at the Blue Whale."
She refuses and ends the date-- a date, I might add, that she initiated.  (Apparently, You've got Bruno is highly overrated.)

From what Josette said, I got the impression that the Leviathans had indeed planned to kidnap Josette but were unable to, and decided to act as if they had.

I'm curious what she said that gave you that impression.  I thought she seemed focused on her relationship with Barnabas, and repeatedly said I don't know nothin' about no Leviathans.  Or something like that.

Has Violet Welles left at this point?   Or as I said, am I missing the greatness?

Welles wrote this episode, lol.  And no, because I don't think there's any greatness to behold.  It's not even good enough to be craptastic.

Calendar Events / Announcements '10 I / Burton talks about Steele
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:42:14 PM »
From Parade magazine--

Tim Burton "shares his favorite monsters, madmen, and villains in the movies," and had this to say about Barbara Steele:

[Her] breakout performance as Katia Vajda/Princess Asa Vajda in Mario Brava's Black Sunday (1960) is a testament to her unsual, haunting beauty. There's no mistaking why Steele went on to become the Queen of Italian Horror.

See Tim Burton gets into character for the full article.

How I wish he could find a part for her in the DS movie.  Wouldn't she have been a terrific Maleva in The Wolfman?

I was surprised when Elizabeth seemed so familiar with the 1970 version of Quentin Collins.  I don't remember them meeting.  And then Roger showed up and he thought it was Quentin's ghost!  I suppose Elizabeth and David, being absorbed in Leviathan lunacy, hadn't said anything to Roger about Quentin.  But it still seemed strange, and nobody commented on the fact that nobody had told Roger.

Roger is so often away when stuff happens that by now everyone else is probably accustomed to his being the last to know about everything, lol.  Anyway, Liz first saw the 1970 Quentin in #941 when she opened the door to see him holding an unconscious Carolyn in his arms, so of course she let out a scream.  You might recall that she offered him a choice of coffee or brandy that night and he chose the coffee, yes?

For the first time in years, I don't think the change in Angelique's clothes and hair is a continuity error.  If she really couldn't get back to the island until morning, it makes sense that she'd have the spend the time doing something.

And though her powers are dormant, the ep made it clear that she still possesses a sharp intuitiveness-- she sensed that Sky purposely drew her away from the house, and that something bad had occurred in her absence.  But with that in mind, how could she have been so wrong about her husband?  And btw, I bet Donald Trump doesn't spend even a fraction of the time on the phone that he does.  When Sky isn't placing or accepting calls, he's telling somebody about the calls.

Chris' cleaned-up look was really scary!  He looked better in a bloody shirt and messy hair.

Chris to Barnabas:  "Tell [Jeb] to make a clean job of it when the moon is full."
Apparently, Chris knows that killing a werewolf in human form turns him/her into the animal forever.  But if he knows, shouldn't Quentin have known too, and if so, why would he try to poison Chris?  The answer is probably that introducing the new detail was a mistake.

Jeb:  "So everything he told me this morning was a lie. That I thought he had saved my life."
Sky:  "Evidently, everything he told you was a lie."
Jeb:  "Yeah, everything."
C'mon, Chris P, focus on your lines.  [rleyeb]

Jeb:  "MORE, MORE, MORE!"
How do you like it?  How do you like it?
-or-
With a rebel yell...
(Sorry!)

What does Richard Fairbanks and his grave have to do with Jeb collecting a bat?

Because Jeb sought to employ Fairbanks' spirit to help make his incantation effective.  It's the same principal as collecting graveyard dirt for use in magic, good or bad.  In this case, the bat he called for was no ordinary bat-- it was summoned from hell.  (A bat out of hell, ha!)

Angelique really shouldn't have expected Sky to believe her unbelievable story about the Leviathans.  Maybe he pretended some initial incredulity to keep up the pretense that he was just a down-to-earth business tycoon.  Either way, it was fun to see Barnabas's secret leaking out that way.

Unfortunately, we saw neither, because Geoffrey Scott was apparently incapable of registering any emotion-- there wasn't a hint of emotional pain when he accused Angelique of keeping secrets, and when Angelique finally did start telling him about the Leviathan plan, she may as well have been talking to the walls because we got nothing.  What a waste of a good plot twist.

Chris was over the top at the end but he could have been on drugs that day as he has admitted to doing! I look for his pupils to be dilated all the time!  LOL

Though, as you'll see when you get to attend a Fest along with him, Pennock can be very animated and excitable on stage, especially while performing his autobiographical comics.  So, unless he has specifically said that he was on a drug high during that scene, we really can't know if he was.
