I have been dying to see this JB classic for years!!!!!--

The Man Who Reclaimed His Head

From www.sinistercinema.com:
(1934) Claude Rains, Joan Bennett, Lionel Atwill, Henry O’Neill. A great film about a pacifist who goes to work for a publisher and writes anti-war editorials. The writer feels betrayed, though, when he finds the publisher in cahoots with arms manufacturers. But he goes totally nuts when he discovers the publisher trying to make the move on his wife. Sometimes classified as a horror film because of its most horrific climax. A must. From 16mm.

Yippee, and thank you, Kosmo!!!

I don't really remember the conversation clearly.  I do remember that she left, still under contract and that's why she was recalled for 1840. I believe that was also reported in an interview published in a fanzine.

No worries, Doctor and K9.  A fan (Kosmo) tells yet another variation on the story that was related to him by Terry some years ago during a visit to Lyndhurst.  She said she was taking classes during her hiatus from DS and when the role of Edith came up and she heard about it, she felt that the timing was good for her.  A contractual obligation wasn't mentioned.

I've begun to wonder if this situation is similar to her telling the story in in the DS Companion about Beth bouncing back up after a fall that occurred during taping (she specifies how the timing related to a commercial break), but we know it did not happen while the camera was running.  Unfortunately, even memories of a person's own experiences can sometimes change.

Did they want a new actress to play Megan?

She doesn't say, only that "Gordon thought I was all wrong for the part; that I was much too dramatic for Megan, who he saw as the 'girl next door.'"

Of course, Megan became so much more than that, and I'm not sure that I've seen enough of Terry Crawford's acting to guess at how she would have handled the changes that the character went through.  What do the rest of you think?

I find it hard to believe that Quentin accomplished anything by getting close to the wolf and addressing Chris, even at the cusp of dawn.  Would he have been so brazen if not for the portrait?  And btw, I'm not sure that the wolf wouldn't have killed Sabrina during the last full moon had Bruno not come along.

I agree with Magnus-- the dialogue became wonderful as soon as Chris and Quentin were put together.  Kudos to Violet Welles for--

Chris:  "I am what I am because of you. Now you owe me something. I want you to kill me right now."
and
Carolyn to Jeb:  "I feel that I'm doomed to lose everyone."
and more!  Taeylor quoted one of my favorites!

Chris to Quentin:  "You didn't have an enemy that knew your secret."
Oh boy, did he ever!!

Chris Pennock made no attempt to wipe Stroka's spit off his face.  That's concentration!  And he did a great job with the incantation in the graveyard; however, it looked like he was staring in one place.  Hmm.  As soon as he looked toward the graves, it started to go downhill a bit, sigh.

Jeb:  "...Five new souls for you to claim..."
I'm counting 6 enemies-- Barnabas, Quentin, Roger, Julia, Maggie and Willie-- so I must be overthinking it.

VO: "Bruno has replaced the silver bullets in Jeb's gun with ordinary ones..."  ... and he has replaced Jeb's usual coffee with Folger's crystals!!

...

Lets' just be glad the first body part to emerge from the dirt was a hand...  These guys are pretty stiff....

ROFL

Quote
Her betrayal triggers Jeb's first spark of a sense of responsibility... it makes sense.  His "mother" betraying him forces Jeb to begin to get the idea of forgiving and mercy.   He's motivated to search his head for a justification to forgive, and easily finds one... it was his fault.   He never had the slightest motivation to do this with anyone before.   And so starts Jeb's moral education, though I don't care one bit, since he's done so much crap to so many people already, and never even confesses.

I was surprised to hear him say "Poor Megan" (a woman he called expendable not very long ago), but I think that's the sum total of any growth I saw in him here.  He already admitted that turning Barnabas was a mistake.  He already stopped wanting to change into the creature because the thing was scary to Carolyn.  And he's ready to sic zombies on his enemies, and I'm not sure that Megan's supposed betrayal was the only thing that set him off; he seemed pretty perturbed to learn that Quentin urged Carolyn to stop seeing him.  What a big baby.

And this thing where the hands reach up out of the ground. I've seen it several times (on TV, not in real life, folks) throughout my many years and always wondered ...well, it always appears that they're buried in the ground sans coffin. I mean, if you're in a coffin underground, it must take an awful lot of strength to open that lid.

It scared the crap out of me in Carrie because it was so unexpected, and yeah-- there was no coffin or official burial for that one to have us scratching out heads, plus we're not even sure if it was supposed to be real.

And that's why Jeb kissed Megan in a decidedly unfilial manner?
Well, I never said he wasn't a very confused guy...

It's just my take, but with this viewing I saw the kiss as more calculated than Oedipal, a proof of his autonomy.  He said afterward that he was tired of having her think of him as Alexander or Michael, and told her that she didn't have the special hold on him that she did with them.

The hand poking out of Findley's grave belonged to Charles Rush, though he won't get to play his zombie.  But we know that he can move about silently because we've seen him before as the Grant Douglas impersonator who walked around Collinwood and peered in through the window of the antique shop.

Curtis wanted Marie Wallace to play Megan from the start, even at the objection of the writers (Gordon Russell, anyway, as Marie says in her book, but he came around after he saw her in the role), but of course DC ruled (which I mean in the literal sense).

We can do polls?!

At the top of the board listing, after "mark as read," "notify" and "new topic," there's a button for "new poll."  Haven't you posted in some of the poll topics started by TNickey2003?

Why would a whip be hanging in "an abandoned crypt"?

Why would a turn lock be on the outside of the door to a crypt?

Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror" gave us two evil spawn-- the rapidly growing part-human Wilbur, and the cattle-devouring horror that eventually became so huge that an entire farmhouse could no longer contain it.  It's pretty obvious that Wilbur was the inspiration for Jeb, but I'm thinking that the DS counterpart to the immense supernatural horror was actually Bruno's hair.

I kept being distracted by the plaque behind the werewolf. E. Pendleton Stockbridge, born 1801, died 1817.  Poor thing, only 16 years old when he died, and I'm betting nobody gave him the chance to become a zombie.

Picture Daniel Keyes, in black & white, saying (from #154), "She was drowned at sea-- most of her body was torn to bits by the rocks."  Ew.  And so much for being a candidate for zombie.

Speaking of torn apart, who is going to put Davenport back in his resting spot?  And will his spirit be free to haunt Jeb?

If that werewolf ever gets loose, Bruno's days are numbered. I hope they can find a coffin large enough to accomodate him and his hair. Bury the coat with him too. PLEASE bury the coat with him.

[lghb]  Hey, a lot of bunnies died for that coat.

I personally don't think I would be whipping a werewolf but you know that's just me!

LOL  As if angering PETA wasn't bad enough, now he's got to worry about the SPCA.

Megan's green eye shadow is so 1970!

Poor E. Pendleton Stockbridge, who died horribly at sea-- drowned and torn to bits on the rocks at the age of 16, and was not only robbed of her first name and forced to rest with the other Stockbridges that died tragically, but now she has a werewolf chained to her stone plaque.

Bruno to Jeb:  "I never let this bag out of my sight."
Am I crazy, or was this the first time we saw it?

Briscoe chained to a wall. What was that Star Trek episode with Cap'n Kirk and Spocko mannicled in a dungeoun... Cat's Paw.

Nice.  And weren't they guarded by zombified Enterprise officers?

Aw, no dirtnap for Davenport.  But then I keep forgetting he doesn't want one.   How's he been passing the time between assignments, though?   I wish Bruno had misheard a conversation of Sabrina's and chained Ned up in the crypt instead.

Ha!  As for zombie Davenport, maybe if Mrs. Davenport had buried him in his uniform instead of that black suit that was too small for him, he might have been content to remain in his grave.

I apologize for having absolutely nothing interesting to say about the episode.

But Spectre Toys is listing a July release date.

And I don't think I've ever seen the photo of Barn and Santa.

I got that photo from PomPress and I think I received it from ShadowGram, too.  Sooo... there you go.  [ghost_cheesy] [ghost_wink]

Philippe, a nice thing about the Burbank Marriott is that it's within walking distance of the airport, or a short hop by shuttle.  It's just a shame that direct flights into that airport from most cities are at a minimum.  There's also a handful of places around it to get a quick bite if you want to skip a meal at the hotel, but to do better than that you'd need a friend with a car.  ;)
