Lydia, didn't Nicholas often streamline his magic too?  The magic mirror that both of them used comes to mind, and how they needed a stake and hammer to dispatch a vampire, even ones they created themselves through magic.  And in terms of results, neither the witch or the warlock was efficient 100% of the time.  So even in just the DS universe, I can't call that a female thing.

And Angelique, being a woman, used magic to get what she wanted (or anyway, to try to get what she wanted) without being terribly concerned about the means.

Stephen King is a Dark Shadows fan, if he wrote a DS book would it be fanfiction?

That depends.  Mark Rainey's fantastic The Labyrinth of Souls, which he offered for a time as a free dl (Harper Collins blew it on that one) is ff, whereas his Dreams of the Dark is not.

That story is fan fiction, and the difference from other works being sold by fans is that it's in ebook form.  What's fascinating is that Amazon is selling it.
