If Costello did in fact say that he named Barnabas after a tombstone he spotted in NY, that doesn't really settle the matter. It's hearsay. And memories have a way of evolving over years, certainly over decades.

Don't know if this helps, but I mentioned it was from a very early Fest, and pulled out a Q&A from the event (1984 in Newark, as Uncle Roger recalled) in which Costello says:  "I named Barnabas. ... At any rate. Dan was away and we were going to introduce this character, and remembered we hadn’t a name for him. So, I was raised in NY-- Jackson Heights. In Flushing, long Island, there is an old Dutch burial ground, and on the grave was 'Barnabas somebody-or-other . . Smith' and I thought, 'Jesus, that’s a name for you.' So we voted and 'Barnabas' got it. That’s how we named him."

Thanks for the link, retzev!

Quote from: Bill Branch
"Finally," he said, "in the cemetery behind the home used as Evans’ Cottage there is a grave for Barnabas Bates. This has to be where they got Barnabas from. These cannot be coincidences."

I suspect it really is a coincidence.  DS fan Guy Haines has talked about hearing from Robert Costello at a very early Fest that he (Costello) got the name from a gravestone in Flushing in NY.

Did Dana Elcar and/or Vince O'Brien refuse to cross the picket line too?

Elcar refused and was fired because of it.  O'Brien became his replacement (and continued on the show for more than a year), though it's difficult to tell since their eps from around that time were taped out of sequence:

Elcar's last ep taped on 9/15/67; Vince O'Brien's 1st as the Sheriff taped on 9/18/67.

I channel surfed into a scene the other day between Dana Elcar and Michael Cavanaugh on MacGyver-- 2 Sheriff George Pattersons!

How many times did actual scuffles break out on DS? ... I'd love to see a compilation video set to "Eye of the Tiger".

Someday, you must see ProfStokes' compilation vid set to "Kung Fu Fighting"!

---- ORIGINAL DS MOVIES & 2012 DS MOVIE ON DVD & BLU RAY
Warner Brothers Home Video has now issued all 3 DS movies on both DVD and high-definition BluRay discs.
Released Oct. 30 were the film "spin-offs" to the original DS daytime TV series. Members of the 1966-71 TV cast appear in each as versions of their TV characters or creating new characters. Both movies were shot on location at Lyndhurst Estate and nearby Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown, NY.
"House of Dark Shadows" (1970) stars Jonathan Frid in a condensed retelling of vampire Barnabas Collins' release from his coffin into Collinsport, Maine, circa 1970, where he searches for the reincarnation of his 18th century love.
"Night of Dark Shadows" (1971) stars David Selby in an original story about a Collins heir returning to the family home. It's now haunted by the powerful spirit of a witch determined to have her lost love with her again - forever.
These are the versions as first seen in movie theatres in 1970 and 1971. No extra or deleted footage has been added, although the promotional trailers for each film are included.
SG Update # 271 last month reported the 10-2 release of the 2012 "Dark Shadows," film starring Johnny Depp, with brief cameos by original DS actors JONATHAN FRID (Barnabas), DAVID SELBY (Quentin), LARA PARKER, and KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT. The BluRay does include several deleted scenes as well as various featurettes.
All 3 movies can be purchased via Amazon.com and through various online and store retail outlets.

---- JERRY LACY IN NEW PLAY, "SURVIVING MAMA"

Despite the praise for Lacy's performance as two characters, reviews I've seen of "Surviving Mama" have been critical.  But just over a week ago, Lacy announced that the cast had made adjustments and the result "is not nearly as bad" as the reviewers claimed, and he said the audience seems to be reacting more and more favorably.  He also blamed some of the earlier audience dissatisfaction on confusion caused by the jumps in time.  I'm curious if any fans here have seen the play because they'd certainly be at an advantage when it comes to following a story that moves back and forth in time, with everyone in the cast playing dual characters.

Here's what the LA Times had to say last month:  Review: A choppy 'Surviving Mama' at Edgemar Center for the Arts

Saw this segment from Open House NYC on NBC in Los Angeles (where it's simply called Open House):  Square Feet: Go Inside a Gilded Age Mansion on the River  The residence for sale (now at a reduced price from it's nearly $2 million price tag) is 1 of 3 in the original Vanderlip mansion known as Beechwood in Briarcliff, NY.  The exterior of Beechwood looks pretty much as it did when it stood in as the Old House in HoDS, and it's within walking distance of the site of the original Scarbrough train station seen in Ep #1 of DS.  This clip gives you a look at, among other things, the original master bedroom, but sadly, the mansion's infamous staircase (where Frid's Barnabas beat Willie with his cane) was removed when the mansion was subdivided.

Wasn't it the only time?   Besides, no discussions would have happened yet about how to handle the characters' knowledge of vampires, since Barnabas wasn't envisioned yet at that point.

Post Barnabas, I recall [PT] Hoffman getting her hands on a book that told her everything she wanted to know about vampires (but was afraid to ask [hall2_wink]).
