I'm not sure what questions are being asked. On the face of it, if Barnabas hadn't been there, I suppose... Quentin would have used his forged will to inherit the estate? It was Barnabas who stopped that. With or without Barnabas, the secret doesn't get passed on, but if it had been, Edith might have wanted to tell the secret to the strongest responsible adult, because there might be hard physical work involved in containing a vampire should things go wrong... which makes it Edward. (Though Judith's okay with a gun, at least when zoned out...)
Strike that... Edith didn't see fit to tell anyone when she had become a bedridden old woman, so she clearly isn't thinking about who has a remote chance of taking on a vampire. If that was a factor, she's have told someone long before this.
