and remember when those character portraits were released it said that david, who believed in ghosts, had found an "ally" in victoria?

but other than their introductory scene at the dinner table the two shared virtually no screentime. and certainly no scenes of david being "tutored", or anything else, by vicki. one has to wonder how much of that relationship ended up on the cutting room floor as well.

what's notable is that in nearly every review...good, bad, or indifferent...is the almost universal opinion that the bulk of the cast, minus depp and green, went largely underused. i wonder what the solution would have been or even if there was one?

and also somewhat ironic given that the original series, when major characters disappeared for days or even weeks at a time, suffered from the same flaw. [ghost_huh]

i guess what i meant is that the people i know who saw it, and filmgoers in general, would not be "confused" by what "we" would be confused by or would find disorienting or out of place knowing the source material so well.

as a film on it's own terms perhaps it was somewhat disjointed/choppily edited/etc and for that one could certainly find it a confusing story.

but they would not find, say, julia's "actions" as out of left field and out of character as someone familiar with the story would. they don't know the history of the character.

true...

without the baggage and expectations "we" brought to the film to a general audience it probably reads as the typical burton folly.

a bit all over the place but otherwise a self-contained world. they're not spun out on the possibility(or lack thereof)sequels. no one who i know(oustside fandom)who saw it was "confused". they just accepted it on it's own weird terms.

while i found the vicki/maggie merger highly disorienting they thought nothing of it. she was just some girl using an alias. neither name meant anything to them. ditto the carolyn werwolf "reveal". while i found it repugnant they just saw it as another weird element in an already weird story. they had no emotional jolt from it. and without knowing the elaborate history of the barnabas/julia relationship on the series she was just some pill-popping lady doctor who gave a vampire a bl**j*b. they certainly didn't find it as jarring as fans certainly did.

so without any preconceived notions it was what it was. and while "we" waited for five years with baited breath, devouring every press clip and photograph, for them it's just another movie they saw among hundreds of others.

interesting observation about laura's ghostly attire...

i never even thought about it but "we" are so used to seeing DS ghostly apparitons in old fashioned(meaning 18th and 19th century)attire that i didn't stop to try and date laura's gown. perhaps the explosive and overstuffed nature of the film's climax and her sudden appearance were otherwise distracting. but, yes, it would have had to date from the mid-to-late 1960's.

and true that, unlike the daily series, which gave us over a thousand episodes to pour over and analyze over and again the two hour structure of the movie will not permanently support daily discourse and will die down eventually.

i suppose it's a moot point now but why was monica rich kossan potentially associated with a 1991 reunion?

i think the gravy train is really going to be the DVD market.

so where are these types of numbers leaving the film?

not a blockbuster. not a flop. a "modest hit"?

at all three screenings i've attended the audience has been very multi-generational. definitely not skewing towards one age group or another.

at the opening day showing, which was packed, there was a small round of applause when the four OS actors appeared onscreen. which would make sense as die-hard fans likely attended on the first day.

at subsequent shows the audience had no reaction to the cameos and likely didn't know who they were.

and again, i think this is going to have a huge afterlife in the DVD market.

They've already been replacing (with other movies) the billboards, and ads on buses and bus stops, in Chicago over the last several days.  [ghost_sad]

it's happened in new york as well...

for a few weeks "they" were looking down on us from everywhere. now they're gone. a little moment in time and now they'll begin to retreat from the public consciousness and become "ours" again soon.

and for whatever this means when i went to see it wednesday at 7:00pm there were only about 20 people in the theater. [ghost_shocked]

a friend of mine wanted to see the movie so this week i went, yes, a third time.

on first viewing i found the "magtoria" compromise and the carolyn "reveal" to be extremely discombobulating.

the explosive, overstuffed "climax", as someone else pointed out, also felt like about a third of the movie's running time.

but in reality it was only about 10 minutes.

so my feelings about the film have softened considerably. it's just become part of our "vocabulary" if you will. a different variation on the tale. flawed to be sure, and what version of the story isn't, but quite enjoyable. i wasn't "mesmerized" by it the way i was the OS but i don't dislike it either. hopefully a "director's cut" dvd will help flesh some of it out.

i still don't really go for "magtoria" and i will forever despise turning carolyn into a werewolf in the last ten minutes of the film but otherwise it's fun.

i'm on the fence with paul stoddard but that's definitely woodard and mcquire...

i guess because gerringer and patrick are deceased they could use their likenesses without paying a royalty? [ghost_huh]

since it was not(that we're aware of)written into the script i suppose all any of us can do is randomly speculate...

but it doesn't really seem "in the character" of the girl we saw to engage in criminal activity like theft.

she struck me as the classic "virtuous" DS ingenue. but that's just my take on her.

even with multiple viewings vicki's trajectory to collinwood is impossible to work into a coherent timeline...

she(i guess she's still "maggie" at this point)escapes from windcliff, then we see her(still wearing the same wet clothes)in a diner with the ghost of josette reading the advertisement for the governess position. so it would seem that virtually no time had passed.

so again how did she apply for the position? was she homeless at this point? how did she even have the money for trainfare if she was a mental hospital escapee? where and when did she get the little blue suitcase and all the cute early 1960's dresses and tights and shoes?

i know we're not supposed to focus on such mundane things but they took the trouble to create this rather elaborate backstory for her and then through some sloppy writing/continuity gaffes made it sort of nonsensical. [ghost_huh]

I agree. Vicki seemed very excited/wishful about her destiny.

i feel like bella/vicki was also the victim of some overzealous editing.

she only has maybe three or four major scenes before the big "josette" ending. for such a supposedly important character she gets short shrift in terms of screentime.
