nice theories but i'll not make excuses for bad/sloppy writing...

unlike the old on-the-fly nature of the daily show the film had five years to work out the kinks. at any point in the production someone should have looked at this situation and realized that it made no sense.


it was a colossal gaffe and, like turning carolyn into a werewolf in the movies last five minutes, pretty unforgivable.

with all due respect i think that you were so pleased that maggie was unexpectedly in the film you're willing to overlook anything. like the fact that she changed her name on the way to a job interview she was already expected for.

AND since the depp film has largely left theaters and will very soon be out on DVD you'd think they might have actually, you know, showed it at some point in the event's programming.

i suppose i shouldn't be that surprised given that the 1991 series is a virtual nonentity within the fest community. it would appear that the whole enterprise concerns itself almost exclusively with the OS.

other than parker and smyth's brief remarks what was the attitudes about the film at this year's fest anyways???


it's sounding like it barely came up...which is remarkable given that a 100+ million dollar film based on this source material just came out two months ago. i mean scott and parker were IN the darn thing and since it's been released to the public they're no longer bound by confidentiality agreements. didn't they have anything interesting to say? what about pierson?

was there any merchandising other than scott's book? or was the whole thing the elephant in the room? there certainly are many at this board who enjoyed the film, were fans of it in abundance?

on the OS burke was already a well established character when barnabas was introduced and a romance between him and vicki was being setup since the series' premier. so when barnabas set his sights on vicki a rivalry was instantly established. and at this point angelique had not yet been introduced and vicki was not really the "present day" josette variation per se in the same way she is in other variations on the story.

however in the 1991 series with vicki the josette incarnation they decided to launch into the barnabas/vicki romance right out of the gate. and with angelique introduced almost immediately that became the romantic triangle. had the series progressed to a second season it looked like a peter bradford storyline was being set up so in terms of a romantic rivalry in season two again burke would have been superfluous.

again with the film with vicki established as the "josette figure" from the outset and angelique already onboard the josette-barnabas-angelique triangle was the conflict...even though this part of the story was, for whatever reason, much more underplayed than in previous tellings.

i guess roger davis wasn't there selling pictures of himself with his ex-wife jaclyn smith like he was last year...
