and vicki SMOKING!

that totally ads another dimension to the character. the bit with julia at the overlook was nice too.

these were only a few seconds long. i can't imagine why they were deleted from the cinematic release. [ghost_huh]

especially to the advantage of the overblown, overlong and preposterous "climactic scene". [ghost_tongue]

i vowed not to post in this topic again however...

unfortunately for frid the very nature of the barnabas collins character...a man with a "secret"...readily lends itself to a gay subtext whether it's intentionally there or not. an ascot wearing man with a "secret" who hung out with joan bennett and grayson hall.

i've heard from countless gay men who said that as adolescents they identified with the character on that level.

and when the actor who portrayed that character was a, i believe it was once called "confirmed bachelor", it simply opens itself up to that interpretation.

it is what it is kids...and scolding everyone who speculates on the subject isn't going to change it.

it's been months since most of us saw the film and posting on it's actual content, as opposed to just reports on it's box office, has slowed down greatly...

it will be interesting to see what the board looks like after the DVD is released and we can all absorb the minutia and obsess about the details. especially given the additional deleted footage.

as i've said since the get go i really think this thing will have an enormous afterlife. eventually it will just get absorbed into the DS vocabulary and even "purists" who despised it from the outset will have to get used to it as part of our strange world.

also i believe this balcony/overlook is where vicki witnessed josette's ghost falling from the chandelier.

this was immediately after roger left in the taxi...

david was standing in the door with tears as liz, barnabas and vicki looked on.

right after this the disco ball drops, barnabas catches fire and is doused with the mop bucket as the gang looks on in shock. as i recall carolyn witnessed this from the upstairs overlook.

channel 56 was our "uhf" station in new hampshire...

i grew up watching the usual syndicated junk food of the 70's...the brady bunch, gilligan's island, i dream of genie and that saturday masterwork "creature double feature"...but somehow DS escaped me.

as a child with a budding gay sensibility i adored soap operas and 1960's fashions. if i had seen even a minute of it i would have stopped and watched it.

also isn't moretz slightly too young for the part?

i thought the character was supposed to be a high school senior(17-18 years old). hence all the drama at the prom.

that picture is too scary. i don't like it. [ghost_shocked]

digressing back to the topic of DS "purists"...

what's funny is that over on FB where alot of the more heated conversations over the film initially took place, and even a few silly deppshadows "hate groups" popped up, tons of people who post in the various forums there are now using images from the film as their avatars. every day people pop up in my "people you make know" box with a picture of johnny or eva or michelle...

true they're probably not the same people who objected to the film in the first place but it's definitely part of our "vocabulary" so to speak.

to me it's definitely more evocative, even with all the storyline changes, to the OS than the 1991 series in it's tone and sensibility. it's trippiness and strangeness recall that more than the florid and over-earnest soap-opera-ish-ness of the later series.

i grew up in new hampshire in the 70's and 80' and have absolutely no childhood memories of the series. none. perhaps it was not syndicated in that area???

my first exposure to it was at some point in the late 1990's i believe at a time when the sci-fi channel aired two episodes at 11:00pm. i'll always remember the first episodes i watched were the ones where david locked victoria up in the attic and she saw bill malloy's ghost.

i was living in a large brownstone in brooklyn at the time and sometimes i watched television with my landlady. she must have seen this with me because later when i started watching the series in it's entirety on video she always asked me about two things: joan bennett and "that girl that got locked in the attic".

Current Talk '12 II / Re: Is Angelique Mentally Ill?

josette and roxanne were angelique's romantic rivals...

regardless of what one actually thinks of josette as a flesh and blood character she was a "presence" of tremendous importance throughout the series' run. remember "josette lafrenier" appeared soon after the show premiered. she was prominently featured enough in series mythology that whatever the viewer actually thought of her they, and through them angelique, had to recognized her significance.

hence they could get a feeling for angelique's tremendous jealousy around her. it translated to the viewer.

not so with roxanne. the writers just sort of threw it at the audience and expected it to take. it didn't.

so again, watching angelique go through the motions of trying to work herself into a foam over her just goes limp.

my DVD player is ten years old and nearing the end of it run...

while i wouldn't upgrade to the blue-ray format just for the DS release i might have to do it sooner or later anyways. so my question is this...

i have hundreds of DVDs that i don't want to replace. will they be compatible with a blue-ray setup or do i need to start again from scratch?

perhaps "wimpy" was not the best choice of words...

but my point was really that during most of the other time periods/storylines angelique was going up against a character who's importance in series lore was stratospheric. so while josette might not have actually posed a direct threat to ang she was still a force to be reckoned with.

roxanne was, in my opinion, the most poorly developed regular character on the series. it wasn't donna wandrey's fault. by the time she joined the program it was changing time periods every three months so there was never the time for any character development. yet in each new time period they just plunked her down and expected the viewer to somehow find her important and engaging and she just wasn't.

so during 1840 watching angelique try and work herself into a jealous rage over this poorly written and developed character just falls completely flat. it's a dud.
