Calendar Events / Announcements '13 I / bella in bazaar

the february issue of harper's bazaar does a round up of 2012's "best dressed" models and actresses...

featured is "aussie stunner" bella heathcote. although she's just referred to as johnny depp's "love interest" in 'dark shadows'(no need to try and explain the vicki/maggie/josette pastiche to the uninitiated)they images that accompany her mention were done on the international ds press tour and indeed heathcote was stunning and quite chic.

in an updo and heavier bang than she wore in the film and frocks by chanel and pucci bella turned it out!

to say nothing of that cheap(cheap!!!)fur coat he wore across these episodes...

michael stroka said in one of the DVD interviews said hairdo required a full roller-set to rival any of the actresses on the show.

Current Talk '12 II / Re: If Dark Shadows ever did a Christmas Storyline?
« on: January 02, 2013, 02:24:51 PM »
i recently watched the season two "christmas special" of 'downton abbey' and the maids were given as a gift from the family a bolt of simple cloth from which to make their own dress.  apparently this was a common custom in english houses.

do we think the collin's family gave mrs.johnson a similarly "do it yourself" gift? i can just see the barely disguised contempt on mrs.j's face upon it's reception. and you just know the christmas ham was canned.

i see liz and roger giving one another rather formal and somewhat impersonal gifts. for roger a pocket watch or fountain pen. for liz some fussy old perfume from the 1940's. a very heady floral that occupies the room long after it's wearer departs.

carolyn and david fare slightly better. for carolyn a fine cashmere sweater and silk scarf from 'brewster's'. for david a practical but cheerless gift like wools socks but also some spangly electric toy like that robot thingy that hangs out on the show's periphery for years without ever serving a narrative purpose.

poor vicki gets some dumpy gift like a cloth bound blank book to use as a journal for which she's still grateful because at the foundling home all the girls ever got was a pair of galoshes.

and like everything at collinwood a hint of sourness and gloom hangs over the entire affair. [santa_rolleyes]

yeah laura's second appearance wasn't as good...

1897 was so cacophonous laura got lost in the din. and one thing i liked about her 1966 storyline was that it was a great mix of the supernatural and "normal" soap opera storytelling. obviously 1897 was anything but normal.

still it was fun to see diana again. for me she's a relatively small but very distinctive presence in the whole thing.

indeed karlen's complete absence from all DS related activities in recent years is cause for concern...

i forget did he issue any statement when frid passed away earlier in the year? one would think he would have given the nature of their working relationship.

and given his predilection for spouting off has he had nothing to say in regards to the film? suspicious.

one can only hope he's o.k.

and clarice blackburn and just about anybody. i'm recalling a 1795 scene in particular with thoroughbreds clarice, joan and grayson that was electric.

laura's introductory scenes in the coffee shop(in a hat and gloves no less!)are personal favorites...

even before any of the "phoenix" stuff took off i recall being absolutely mesmerized my diana millay's strange delivery and attitude in these episodes. there was something weary and languid about her as a perky-but-nosy pre-barnabas maggie pumped her for gossip.

definitely a favorite period.

indeed collinsport seemed to have it's own unique microclimate...

no one ever spoke of it being hot or humid or even warm, even during the height of summer, the fires at collinwood blazed 365 and heavy woolen coats were worn year round. the general atmosphere was cold and dark and stormy.

and yet for a new england town it never snowed, the foliage never turned or fell and was in fact bright green no matter what season.

so perhaps the writers thought it prudent to mention the actual time of year with minimal frequency. actually given the context of the series a halloween story certainly would have been fitting but i don't believe that particular holiday was mentioned once.

perhaps the scope of the story doesn't readily lend itself to the 90-120 minute time frame...

i recently purchased the HoDS DVD and my only attachment to it was the familiar actors/characters and story. as a stand alone narrative it was profoundly disengaging.

interesting observation lydia...

while fans viewing the film have either liked it or disliked it or, in many cases, despised it completely what almost nobody seems to have is any emotional investment in it.

there is something almost emotionally void, or dare i say, bloodless about much of the reaction to it. not counting of course the blood lust of those who wanted burton's head on a pike.

for all of the hype and money spent in the end it might end up being a minor, peripheral, part of the whole thing.

i'll also add that after watching the film a few times on DVD that of the three OS characters merged...victoria, maggie and josette...heathcote's performance was not really evocative of any of them...

she created her own characterization. it's not a bad thing just different.

@nelson collins...

i first saw the film so many months ago it's still interesting to read a fresh review.

while much has been made of the vicki/maggie character merging(of which i'm not a fan)not much has been said(at this board at least)about the fact that the character(whoever she was)wasn't really in the film much at all for it's putative "heroine".

after her strong opening scenes she didn't get much screentime. it's funny because they took the trouble to create this very convoluted backstory for her, with ghosts and institutionalizations and elaborate escapes and pseudonyms, and then promptly wrote her into the background of the main plot. it's almost like they knew that the "josette" angle, a governess and the business with the train were critical parts of series lore but otherwise they had no intention of fleshing it out. or was it supposed to be a bigger part that fell victim in the cutting room?

while "we" understand the importance of the josette figure the viewer new to the story probably didn't get what the big deal with her was.

then bella heathcote was underplayed in most of the promotional material. even on the DVD box the other four actresses appear but not her. it's a strange element of this variation of the tale.

i just picked up the book yesterday and really haven't had the chance to go through it yet but it looks very well done.

i still have very ambivalent feelings about the film but this seems like a nice thing to have. interesting in it's own right.

charles dear...

relax. there is a difference between "venom" and a bit of good natured jabbing between friends. i'm sure ms. scott is a lovely person but even you must admit she is an operator of the highest order. in my ten years as a fan i don't think i've attended a single event with her where she didn't practically vault across the table to sell me something. and judging by her homes in new york and beverly hills her salesmanship has been richly rewarded.

incidentally this offer is called in the retail world "gift with purchase". she's not just sending out greetings from the goodness of her heart. it's an enticement to buy a book. there's nothing wrong with poking a bit of fun at that.

and this is a two way relationship. yes we're "lucky" that the DS actors are so "engaged" compared to other fandoms. they however are also "lucky" that considering their primary fame derives from appearing on a chromekey soap opera nearly half a century ago they still have an active fanbase. very lucky.

ms.scott is an actress and publisher. not mother theresa. she's not above and beyond a bit of ribbing. i don't feel the need to defer to her.

stop carring on like the collinsport scold. you tried to "shame" a bunch of us last summer who didn't want to attend the scaled back fest. it's really not your place.

decidedly un-guilty and un-ashamed, m.

true.

i think the outright hostility that the film generated within the fanbase must have taken scott aback. several times she found herself on the defensive for her involvement in the whole thing. she might be experiencing some regret for hitching her wagon to the project so heavily. it was something of a misfire. and she obviously has boatloads of that darn book to unload.

frid passed away before the film's release so he was spared much of the criticism leveled at it. parker and selby did their little cameos but were not heavily involved in the promotional machine so they got off lightly. scott's decision to throw herself into it with such gusto was perhaps a mistake.

in terms of the quartet of actors who did the cameos somehow over time they've become the official bobblehead mascots of the whole things. the action figure promotional tools even though others, such as grayson hall and joan bennett and, as you say, nancy barrett, actually did more on the series as a whole.
