unless i'm recalling this incorrectly burton...and depp...were the first names attached to the project. it did not exists in any concrete fashion before they optioned it.

so while expectations vacillated wildly during the 4 or so years of preproduction i think everyone knew from the outset it would be some sort of burtonian fantasy. it's comedic side however didn't start to really come into clear focus until the first stills of depp in makeup were leaked and that godforsaken trailer was released.

i don't remember any pre-burton expectations. [snow_undecided]

a few of the FB DS pages have been repeatedly hit with "shoe spammers"...

these women hawking sneakers and other shoes from their "shops". it's actually become sort of a joke. an annoying one. [snow_rolleyes]

i think that zombie thing 'warm bodies' is being set up as the teen/tween 'twilight' replacement...

it basically sounds like 'twilight'(hot but undead boy/pretty mortal girl)with a zombie instead of a vampire.

hey remember when the chatter around the film was that it was going to bring this huge influx of new people to the fanbase?

have we actually seen evidence of that anywhere? there's been much grousing amongst the OS fanbase and some reluctant converts to the film's offbeat sensibility. many of this board's establishment enjoyed it to be sure...

but there have been no new members added in two years...well before the film even began production. is membership down/disabled for some reason? have there been any requests for new memberships?

and any word on how that cruise is filling up? [snow_huh]

for all of it's flaws i'm glad the film didn't end up being some teen-angsty goth-chick "twilight-ish" melodrama...

at least it was imaginative.

and before i get jumped on yes i know DS also made a similar jump in it's time...

but it had only been on the air for 10 months and hadn't really found it's voice or audience yet. GH has been on the air for several decades and this plot goes completely outside of it's well established sensibility and tone.

802
there's chatter on another board that GH has made the jump and is in fact doing a vampire storyline...

how awful. i feel so bad for all of the other actors who worked so hard to keep this show afloat in a reasonable way to get stuck doing this kind of schlock. [snow_sad]

we knew from the getgo mrs. johnson was not going to be a major player in the depp film. if i recall for many months into it's production there was even a question as to whether or not the character was even going to be present. the name "ray shirley" certainly wasn't part of the conversation early on.

i actually thought it was a nice nod to OS continuity she was included at all. she's part of the "fabric" of collinwood.

i'm not sure why we would need explanation or backstory for an elderly housekeeper. she works for the family. a possible backstory would be she was originally employed by liz's parents(or even grandparents)and was kept around long after her usefulness out of some misguided sense of noblesse oblige. i actually have a friend from a very wealthy family where a similar scenario played out. her mother kept on a longtime housekeeper who was really too old to do much work but had become "part of the family" and turning her out would have been cruel.

there were lots of things about the film that perturbed me but mrs. j.'s lack of storyline wasn't one of them.

like diana millay as laura collins clarice blackburn as mrs. johnson was one of those actresses/charcaters that had me spellbound the minute she first walked into the series.

didn't mrs. johnson come storming into the police station mumbling about murder or some such dramatic entrance? i was instantly hooked.

dear lord are you quoting mrs.j's epic mayonnaise meltdown?!?  [snow_silly]

i haven't watched either series regularly in decades and i doubt i'll watch them this time around either...

but this pleases me. i felt terrible when all those people lost their jobs for the reality dreck that replaced these shows. i hope it all works out.

no one in the DS universe can spin a yarn quite like la millay. [snow_rolleyes]

for what it's worth GH was playing in my employee cafeteria today and i caught a few seconds...

lucy cowe(a character i recall from my youth)was freaking out on some guy calling him a "vampire". it seemed like he wasn't and she was just acting hysterical but i never watch the show anymore and had no context to put it into. but it was embarrassing and out of place.

the supernatural story arc is generally the shark jump for soaps. it almost never works. through some remarkable bit of alchemy and happenstance it worked on DS but i've never seen it succeed elsewhere.

i'm recalling some outer space plot on OLTL back in the 80's. wasn't it called "eterna"? and wasn't the main character on DOOL possessed by satan at some point on the 90's? if i remember correctly both storylines became major points of ridicule before the shows' writers came to their senses and abandoned them. i really hope GH doesn't "go there".

no thoughts on "magatoria" g? c'mon...

it is odd that heathcote doesn't have more projects in the pipeline. hollywood loves an ingenue and the saucer-eyed bella certainly fits the bill.

only very recently when i purchased HoDS on dvd did i realize just how closely the 1991 series mirrored it. there are several scene and situation that are virtually identical right down to the costuming.

the revival has much going for it although i greatly dislike the entire 1795 arc crammed into just six episodes.

much of my ambivalence about it is rather shallow and based on the aesthetics of it. i find the 1991 period and setting to be rather unsightly. perms, mullets and acid washed jeans set amidst palm tree and the blinding california sun and the day-for-night glitches are huge distractions/detractions for me.

i realize that the technical incongruities were exacerbated when it was transferred to video but i can never get past that.
