depp detractors the DS12 malcontents are just NOT going to let the makeup thing go. they're like rottweilers and an old shoe...

over on one of the FB boards JUST TODAY when this subject came up someone posted that old chestnut of a photo of depp(in whiteface, hat and funny sunglasses)and bella heathcote walking on the beach that launched the hysteria surrounding his appearance in the film when it was leaked nearly two years ago(yes, it's been that long).

needless to say the usual chorus of unflattering comparisons to Michael Jackson followed despite the fact that anyone who had actually, you know, SEEN the film would know that other that that brief scene depp did not remotely resemble Jackson throughout the rest of the film. in fact his appearance in the scene itself seems to have been softened in post-production and most of film took place indoors anyways.

but they're not going to drop it. [ghost_rolleyes]

And don't forget that Julia had started "treating" Barnabas, so that would probably allow him to begin tolerating limited amounts of sunlight (note that he must remain pretty much covered up, wear dark sun glasses and shade himself with an umbrella).

after multiple viewings i'm still confused on this point...

[spoiler]was Julia actually "treating" barnabas at all? I mean we learn towards the end of the film that she was using his blood to make herself young. so was she actually doing anything to change his physical condition or was it just a ruse to gain access to his blood? remember he tells her he doesn't feel like he's changing?[/spoiler]

apologies if this is too off-topic but...

I've been watching 'dallas' on dvd(I do love an old soap)and there is an episode in season eight featuring both mitch ryan and dennis patrick. ryan plays a police detective and patrick had a semi-regular role as sleazy banker vaughn leeland. they don't share any scenes but I wonder if they reunited on set?

according to the FB page Marie Wallace also had to bow out due to a "family emergency".

i'm surprised no one has commented on this...

karlen's complete absence in recent years of all DS related activity, after decades of heavy participation, has certainly been notable. as far as i'm aware no explanation for that absence has ever been issued.

I wondered if his health was deteriorating. hopefully he's on the mend.

unless they could find a way to really zoom in on one element of it...most likely Quentin's storyline...I would think 1897 is too colossal and unwieldy with dozens of characters to ever be effectively encapsulated in a two hour film.

and even that's a stretch.

it's storytelling 101...

you don't introduce plot, out of thin air, that doesn't in any way relate to the story at hand, in the last five minutes of a film *except* to open up the door to a sequel. Carolyn was a minor character in this thing. until her final minutes she just acted sulky and sullen. she served no purpose in the narrative.

and it was just plain stupid. [ghost_tongue]

since it meant absolutely nothing to the plot at hand and wasn't even introduced as a story element until the film's last five minutes...

then, yes, I can only assume it was meant to tease at the possibility of a werewolf themed sequel. presumably revolving around Quentin.

I rolled my eyes and groaned at the "reveal". it was my absolute least favorite part of the movie. [ghost_tongue]

my first exposure to the series was a late(11-ish)airing that I thought was in the late 1990's early 2000's...

I remember distinctly it was the episode where david locked vicki in the attic and she saw the ghost of bill malloy. the whole "what would you do with a drunken sailor" routine at the blue whale left an impression. I was living in a large brownstone in brooklyn at the time and sometimes watched television with my landlady and she must have seen this with me because when I started to watch the series in it's entirety she always asked me about joan bennett and "that girl that got locked in the attic".

what run would that be? [ghost_undecided]

it is for similar reasons I can't really consider the RTC presentation or the audiodramas OS "continuity"...

the actors are 40+ years older than the characters they are supposed to be playing. they don't take that gap into account. to me it's a gaffe that's hard to overlook.

702
i'm sure i'll catch some flack for bringing up a touchy subject but I think some(many)fans have somewhat unrealistic expectations for what level of participation the OS cast would have in any new version of the story other than small roles/cameos...

with the exception of the child actors the living cast members are now largely in their seventies and eighties. given the existing framework of the story and the established characters there isn't a lot of material for actors of that age. believe it or not even the story's "grand dame" character Elizabeth, a woman in her 50's with a teenage daughter, is now well out of reach for most of the OS actresses.

true new roles could be written. or a supporting character like doctor Woodard could be played by a man of any age. but in terms of the principal characters the OS cast is past that. we are talking about a show that premiered nearly half a century ago.

that appears to be the case. or has at least been widely speculated...

but as it stood paul just played jeremiah during the 1790 sequence. so as it aired there was no "Quentin type" of character(or werewolf)on the canvas yet.

thanks g...

the way things turned out i'll bet vicki wishes she had taken sandy's advice and "gone out to long island and had a ball"...

as I do every year on this date I think i'll pop episode one in.

I agree that after multiple viewings it would definitely be HBC and Michelle Pfeiffer as Julia and Elizabeth that have emerged as favorite performances. I've always been somewhat indifferent to them both as actresses but here they stole the show. great fun.

depp and green were what they were. but their scenes together lacked subtlety. it was all maximum overdrive.

Johnny Lee Miller was fun but underused. after the initial "shock" of the merged character situation Bella grew on me in subsequent viewings as well.

David and Carolyn were too irrelevant to the overall plot to leave much of an impression except Chloe Moretz was rather grating...and don't get me started on her "finale". [ghost_tongue]
