even after all this time Carolyn's "woof i'm a werewolf" reveal from today's slideshow in infuriates me...

the final ten cacophonous minutes nearly ruined the entire film for me. it's really just an exercise in marketing. not cohesive storytelling.

it's storytelling 101. you do not introduce plot in the final ten minutes of a movie unless your aim is to open the door to a possible sequel. I almost groaned at the "reveal" it was so cynical and so obvious. I don't think we even need to name the character that was being alluded to with this nonsense. and since it would appear no sequel is in the works it only served to muddy and confuse an already jumbled story.

I still can't believe they did it. [santa_angry]

maybe it can get published by "pomegranate press".

the last couple days of slides really annoys me...

I enjoyed the movie for the most part but from the explosion of the cannery on it completely falls apart. a total mess. [hall2_angry]

with only four soaps left on the air and the publishing industry in turmoil i'm not sure how any of those old "soap weeklies" are still on the shelves. [hall2_huh]

I've seen the reports on AMC in recent days and it really broke my heart. for all of those actors and production people to have been lead to believe they were being given a another chance and to have that taken away again is really sad. [hall2_embarrassed]

perhaps to clarify the "regular" hotel bound fest is still happening next year as well, is that correct? in tarrytown?

love the group shot...

I think I spot a roll neck caftan on the upper left. [hall2_kiss] nice that KLS reprised her "collinsport waitress" personae complete with short blond wig. although it never appeared in the color episodes if I could have guessed the uniform was that great 60s pale blue. but the yellow looks great!

glad everyone had fun. [hall2_smiley]

Current Talk '24 I / Re: Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Is In Release!!

my feelings originally were that after the first outburst of hostility the film would gradually get absorbed into the DS culture along with all of it's other weird manifestations...

but as of yet that has unfortunately not happened. the "outrage" is as fresh as it was the day that stupid trailer was released and everyone blew a gasket. as much as the actual content of the film a lot of the anger seems to be directed personally at burton and depp. they've become the "villains" in this tale.

outside of DS i'm totally unfamiliar with "fan" culture, behavior and decorum. so perhaps it's "normal" for grown men to weep and threaten suicide over a film. but to me it's been a tremendous turnoff. [hall2_rolleyes]

my main complaints with jerry lacey as the various "trasks" have always been less about his actions per se and more about the broadness and campiness of lacey's performance...

it's very unrealistic in a show known for some "high octane" dramatics. as lacey himself said it's "mustache-twirling at it's best. it's almost like watching a cartoon. whenever I rewatch a portion of the series I fast forward through his parts he's so grating and obnoxious. [hall2_rolleyes]

sorry I cannot post a link but I recently read that both of CBSs daytime soaps, 'the young and the restless' and 'the bold and the beautiful', have had large ratings increases in in recent months...

I wonder if perhaps ABC ever regrets it's very rash decision to cancel most of it's remaining soaps. [hall_huh]

Green says of Angelique's "look" in the film's 'visual companion' that what they were going for was "the American dream"...

perfect, too perfect in fact, perfect makeup. red lips and platinum hair. "glamorous yet sophisticated"...

she also references famous actresses from the 1930s like Bette Davis and Marlene Dietrich(although i'm not seeing it)and describes the clothes as "70s with an 'edge' while the Collins family look more 'old fashioned' ".

I get what she's saying and what all of the supposed "references" were but the end result just looked contemporary. almost nothing about it said "1970s".

but in terms of the "garish" red lipstick and platinum hair it was supposed to symbolize some sort of distorted, overdone, almost grotesque vision of the "perfect American woman". it suggests visually, and of course we later see, that Angelique is just a "façade".

I actually think Colleen Atwood did an amazing job with the costuming...

considering it was set in 1972 it could have been, and I feared it would be, WAY campier. but there wasn't really a bellbottom or platform shoe to be seen. and Atwood's palette was beautiful. she handled it with a subtle hand. I liked what she did with Elizabeth, Julia and Vicki in particular. and Roger's "Van Heusen" look was spot on.

I just think she wimped out on "Angie".
