Back in 1970 (post HODS and prior to any cancellation rumors), there was an interview in Grayson Hall's fanzine that a second film would either be a 1795 version or a Quentin story. I got the impression that the 1795 version would have recapped the Barnabas origin story. It would have been interesting to see what impact that would have had on the daily show.

by the time such a film could be produced and released the daily show would have already left the air. so it really wouldn't have made a difference.

I supposed they could have told the 1795 story in a more straightforward, linear way without Vicki or anybody else traveling back in time from 1970/1 to "witness" it or to try and change it's outcome. it could have been more of a traditional "prequel" without any scenes set in "the present".

in terms of NODS once it became clear that Frid was not onboard and Selby would be heading up the cast I wonder why they decided to go with a totally new story outside of established series' canon rather that some version of the "werewolf" story with which Quentin had become so strongly associated???

it should be noted that by the time a more traditional "sequel" to HODS could be filmed KLS would also have been departed from the scene (she left the company shortly after the HODS filming and did not appear in NODS). so any story set in 1795 would have meant a recast for Josette???

interesting. I've never heard about the proposed "big screen" version of 1795...

since Victoria was pivotal to that storyline it would have had to be completely restructured if they were not going to try and get Alexandra back or recast the role for the film.

between the failed 2004 pilot and the run up to the Depp/Burton film I'm plum out of "what if" musings...

this well is dry.

sort of amazing that at just 8 episodes this thing is already a "comic-con" headliner with a substantial (and almost "cult" like) following.

I haven't seen a wig that bad since Cassandra Collins skipped town. [ghost_rolleyes]

thoughts on episode one?

I wasn't super impressed. it certainly wasn't as "scary" as all get out as it's been reported. and there was some extraneous subplot with the main character's ex-wife.

I also found the main actor's (who's almost completely bald) wig extremely distracting.

indeed a giant MPI booth does not a dealers' room make...

and if ever there was fest for Alexandra and David Hennesey to attend it would be the fiftieth. but I won't count on it either. [ghost_sad]

as always thanks for your great report Prof...

I know it's "old school" but I'm all for the return of the classic hotel bound three day fest for the 50th anniversary. hopefully in New York. but for this I might make my first trek out to LA if the event lineup seems worth it.

the recent attempts to introduce new formats, cruises and dinky day and a half mini events out at Lyndhurst, have not worked for me. I'm not looking for "newness" or "innovation" for my festival experience. I'm looking for a big well stocked dealers' room. interesting film and video presentations. the big panel discussion and so forth.

and how much "newness" can one really attach to the concept of a 50 year old soap opera??? I think any delusions we might have had a couple of years ago about the Depp/Burton film sparking a renaissance and a massive uptick in festival attendance have largely been put to bed. from what I understand the film was not screened or even mentioned at this year's event.

and let's be honest. at 50 years we're nearing the end of the period when the surviving cast will have the health and ease of mobility to endure a large convention type situation. so it would be great to have one big last hurrah before things get scaled back again.

the later attempts to "retroactively" make Barnabas much younger than the actor they cast as him with back when he was just supposed to be "scary" were strange indeed. [ghost_rolleyes]

there has been a pretty deafening silence on the subject here...

indeed earlier in the season I speculated that perhaps it would be a loosely connected "anthologized" series using the same cast each season but with different settings and storylines much like AHS...

but it would appear to be a more "straightforward" (if one can use that word for such a cacophonous story) narrative. and the Victorian setting already seems too strongly established to be changed without enormous fan outcry.

I'm disappointed we never got to see the aftermath of the Dorian/Ethan hookup...

sort of a big ball to drop.
