I agree.

by the 1840 episodes (if not before) the series was plagued by an overwhelming sense of exhaustion. I found them almost impossible to get through.

I thought the 1970 "parallel time" storyline was the last time the show felt at all fresh or energized.

although not quite as dramatic it could be comparable to the setup for 1897 and then having Quentin disappear after just five episodes.

Tad was supposed to be a major player.

it was certainly one of the show's odder pieces of plotting (and gaps in continuity) to set up an entire storyline and time period around a character (Tad) that ended up having virtually nothing to do with it.

by the summer of 1970 the show's producers must have had the general idea that Hennesey would soon be departing (his contract had likely expired) so unless they could have gotten him committed to an extended run on the show it's strange they wrote an entire storyline around him.

by the start of the 1840 storyline it was clear David's time on the series was winding down...

despite "Tad" and "Carrie" launching the storyline and putatively being at it's center no sooner did it start then they were relegated to the background (with Hennesey in particular disappearing for weeks at a time) and never came close to the importance the setup implied. and I don't even recall how "Tad" was eventually written out of the period but it was an afterthought at most. Carrie hung around the periphery but not much came of that character either if I'm remembering correctly. a relatively useless "parallel time" version of the character was shoehorned into 1841PT but I got the impression they were just finishing out Kathy Cody's contract.

isn't the story that David wanted to move to California with his father or something to that effect? to attend a regular high school maybe? or maybe he was just done with the whole thing.

and by "episode 70" should I assume he means episode 70 of the Barnabas period on not really 1966 episode 70? when does Netflix start it's run of show?

where would one be storywise by that point? late summer of 1967? would that be the "Seaview" period?

anyways one would have to be watching with a blindfold and earplugs not to be FULLY versed in the monumentality of Josette Dupres by this point. maybe because she's not actually a "real" flesh and blood character (yet) it's unclear to a newcomer???

still seems inconceivable. [ghost_blink]

since one of the other moderators was actively participating in the conversation it seemed sort of open.

and in terms of a potential sequel to HoDS (which would have been filmed in late 1970 or 1971) who in the company of players was still tied to the production contractually seemed sort of relevant...

but i'll drop it.

it's very, very definitely Maine from the very first episode. there's never anything ambiguous about it.

wasn't Grayson also missing for some weeks around 1969/70 when she had a little "work" done?

I imagine at some point Curtis locked Frid into some sort of long term contract. probably Grayson as well...

several other prominent cast members were on contract. we all know Joan had a highly specialized contract that granted her "star billing" (long after it had become clear someone else was the "star" of the show) as well as those annual six week vacations (resulting in her characters' frequent hospitalizations and entombments). Alexandra also had a long term contract that she needed to be legally extricated from during her pregnancy. I get the impression several original actors had two year contracts at the outset as actors like Joel and David Ford began to decamp in mid to late 1968.

I also assumed that in addition to being some sort of personal favorite of Curtis Roger Davis had a two year contract as one loathsome character after another pooped up like a weed for two years. [ghost_rolleyes]

I guess this is a good opportunity for her, but I would really like to see her given some serious, well-crafted material.  This sounds as if it will be another of Burton's exercises in horror-farce with clown makeup and googly FX.

At least one may presume the pay will be good.

I'm with you on this...

with the runaway success of 'penny dreadful' and a handful of Burton films under her belt my concern is that Green might be typecasting herself right into the 'horror/fantasy/sci-fi genre'.

headlining 'comic con' is nice but it can be quite limiting (as many DS actors can attest). she might want to expand her range before she's stuck. she's quite a good actress and it would be nice to see her in more serious fare.

493
I would imagine she was under contract at least through 1969 since they were able to "call" her back (from her African "safari" or whatever it was) to portray Kitty during the later part of the 1897 storyline.

494
I think that DS had been moving much more into the supernatural/fantastic/psychological direction, and away from the classic monster mode (vampires, werewolves, Frankensteinian creatures), by this time.  The story in NODS seems to be much more in line with the kind of stories that DS had been doing during its last year or so.

the sensibility and tone of NoDS was much more "adult" than some of the earlier stories on the series.

495
perhaps...

but since KLS was off-contract and determined to move to Paris with her fiancé it's interesting to ponder a recast for such a prominent figure as Josette.

was Virginia Vestoff on-contract? would that have been a possibility?
