there's so many to choose from but if I had to pick the one that gave me the most goosebumps when I first saw it it's the episode with the séance that sends Vicki back to 1795. it was DS perfection.

and obviously episode one is in a class by itself.

Marie Wallace said in one of the DVD commentaries that once you had auditioned for a part and gotten the role you never had to "audition" for anything again...

future characters were either written for you specifically or you were cast in a part they thought would be suitable to a particular actor's talents.

that is very interesting casting trivia...

with her black hair she does resemble Joan to some extent. and other characters I've seen her play are rather tightly wound. so I can see her as Carolyn.

not as Vicki or Maggie so much.

and the New York based soap community was very insular at the time. i'll bet lots of well known actors auditioned for parts at one point or another we don't know about.

most movies eventually get relegated to the discount bin. it's part of the natural cycle of a DVD release.

it doesn't necessarily speak to an individual film's quality or success. at the dollar store in my neighborhood nearly George Clooney's entire oeuvre languishes in the bin. and he's still a huge star. DVDs get pressed out by the millions and after the initial burst of activity of a new release are nearly worthless regardless of a film's success or lack thereof. really only "classics" get repackaged and rereleased at full price into perpetuity.

still haters of the Depp film look at this as "validation" that the movie "sucked".

yes I've heard tale about the fuss started by the changes the revival made to the original story and several of the performances...

but as you say in the pre-internet age the damage had to have been well contained. I mean some grousing in a few printed "zines" that went out to probably a few hundred (at most) die hard fans compared to the constant hysteria and snark enabled to millions by the internet almost seems quaint in hindsight. when I first entered the "fandom" about 15 years ago the 1991 series was the "sore spot"...

in retrospect the hostility directed at is was nothing. it took itself "seriously". DEAD SERIOUSLY. which is apparently what "fans" want and attitudes about in in recent years have softened because of the more "comical" take the film took.

indeed the hyperbole used in association with it is almost comical. [snow_rolleyes]

from what I understand it hasn't even been referenced (never mind screened) at recent festival or "cruise" type fan activities. the subject is verboten...

but a woman who played a nurse in a SINGLE episode of the OS is an honored guest.

it was what it was...

it wasn't what most fans wanted, and in retrospect perhaps it was a misfire, but it's what happened.

the continued virulence of the hostility directed at it, and even at it's individual participants, is what's mystifying. on several of the FB boards simply put up an image from it and literally within seconds the floodgates are opened. expect to be fully bombarded with biblical language like "travesty" and "abomination" and continued calls for burton and depp's heads on a pike.

there's actually one page dedicated to the film's poor financial performance and the dvd's continued spiral into the 99 cent bins.

that really wasn't my question...

is that the only reason you liked the movie???

and "glee"?  that's a bit thick.

I don't understand it either, Uncle Roger.  What do these fanatic "fans" want?  A line-by-line recreation of the OS?  As much as we love it, it was far from perfect.  The comedic aspects of '12 regarding Barnabas trying to understand and deal with the culture and technology of 200 years was not only funny but brilliant.  So much better than the OS, '91 or '04 versions that had him fully understand it all within 48 hours so he could slip into society (how utterly preposterous; what did he do? - have Willy give him a crash course in everything from history to how zippers work?).  And '12 paid greater homage to the OS story than '91 or '04.  Sorry, but Victoria was not the reincarnation of Josette - Maggie was.  Both '91 and '04 committed heresy.  In '12, Maggie Evans remained Josette's reincarnation; she made up the name of "Victoria Winters."

if I may you seem to be something of a "one issue voter" in terms of the movie...

everything else being what it was in terms of tone and tempo, if Maggie had not been part of the story, or had been a 'supporting' player (like she was in 91), and had NOT been the "reincarnation" of Josette, but Victoria had (as she was in other iterations), would you have actually loved the movie so much? or even liked it???

at any rate most "fans" don't seem to care who "gets" to be Josette. they still despise the movie.

it's been three years since the film's release (can you believe it???) and after some early chatter that it could lead to some sort of "franchise" we never heard another word again about sequels or any further expansion of the property.

I think it's safe to assume burton/depp's association with the brand has expired.

where does that leave things in terms of rights and ownership??? can anyone else develop the property or is it still tied up in whatever sort of deal burton had the dc's heirs???

like everything else about the film I don't understand why so much hostility is directed at carter's performance of julia...

I thought it was an entertaining and interesting take on the character(although the bj scene was gratuitous). the idea that these characters need to be treated with some sort of "reverence" can get a bit thick.

it was indeed a cool set...

similar to the 'bangor pine' in that it was a well built, highly detailed set that only got used briefly and then disappeared into the abyss rather than re-purposed and used time and again like some other well loved sets ('room 24' certainly comes to mind, as well as the cannery office).

the collinwood basement set (the scene of many a first year dramatic moment) was another great set that fell into complete disuse as the series progressed.
