I consider myself lucky I found a funky little used book/record/video store to take them off my hands for a buck a piece.

I think I had about half of the series on VHS before I got a DVD player for Christmas one year and "upgraded" to the DVD format starting with the 1897 episodes...

even with that the pile up of tapes was enormous. I can only imagine how unwieldy the entire series would have been.  [ghost_rolleyes]

those were the days...

I used to be on the phone with MPI almost every week ordering the series tape, by agonizing five episode tape. it took forever to get through but it was fun. there was so much anticipation waiting for the postman to deliver that little brown box. I still keep MPI's number in my phone even though I haven't actually bought anything in years out of some strange sense of nostalgia.

remember they used to "advertise" their other tapes like "bloopers" and "scariest moments" on the tape. and KLS was always plugging something.  [ghost_rolleyes]

these "best of" collections are sort of mystifying to me...

fans already own these episodes. and the show was serialized and needs to be watched sequentially for it to make any sense. to a newcomer random, out of context scenes and episodes without the structure of the surrounding storyline seem sort of pointless.

the impact comes from the entirety of the story.  [ghost_undecided]

in a few early episodes the characters went there for "dinner"...

I'm imagining seaside casual dining. fried clams. "surf 'n turf" and so forth.

the "bangor pine" was for dressier, more momentous occasions. the diner for burnt coffee and donuts (served three on a plate) for "breakfast".

I don't follow it regularly but did they get rid of that annoying English girl they brought on last season??? she was really dead weight.

it is "based" on 'The Crucible' in the same way that DS "based" it's witchcraft trial storylines on it...

that is very, very loosely. it's more an "inspired by" than any sort of literal retelling. which is certainly how DS approached multiple sources of classic literature.

apologies for the late posting...

tonight the Brooklyn based gothic industrial monthly dance party 'Arkham' will be having it's third annual 'Shadows of the Night' DS tribute night...

screenings of the OS, 1991 and the original movies will be shown throughout the night along with the usual industrial dance music. not sure what other treats might be in store. when they did this a couple years ago they actually got the always game KLS to do a live Skype interview.

it is at Don Pedro's. 90 Manhattan ave, Brooklyn NY 11206. 10pm-4am.

it is much to late for this granny but i'll check it out and report back.

over on some of the boards there's been some loose (and very unsubstantiated) "chatter" about a potential sequel in the pipeline...

I haven't heard a peep. and it really does seem like depp and burton have lost all interest in expanding the "franchise". anyone here heard any whispers???

seems highly unlikely. it's been over three years. and even if a new film went into production now it wouldn't hit the screens until 2017.

Hall brought a seediness and sense of sexual menace to the role Karlen did not...

there's a sense of real danger in his scenes with Vicki, Carolyn and Maggie. like a sexual assault was possible at any second. Karlen was not that predatory. even before Barnabas has Willie under 'control' he seemed more like a petty con than a dangerous sociopath.

who knows how Hall would have handled that transition?

indeed nurse so-and-so is certainly one of the odder editions to the festival circuit in recent years. how about a special panel of "blue whale extras"...

hall in particular seems to have been effectively "taken out of" the whole thing for whatever reasons. he's never been interviewed or included in any of the books or dvd commentaries.

karlen is such a stalwart , carved-in-stone, element of the fandom it's hard to imagine anyone taking any of that thunder. and hall never actually worked with frid. still since he's apparently receptive to hearing from fans I'd be interested to hear his take on the experience.

I always thought it was sort of interesting Alexandra named her son "Adam" fresh on the heels of leaving the show during that period. she was pretty vocal about her dislike of the storyline at the time.

maybe she just liked the name or it had significance to her husband.  [ghost_undecided]
