i agree that besides barnabas vicki would have been the most difficult role to re-cast.although grayson hall would have been nearly impossible to replace as well.alexandra was so identified with the character that perhaps that's the reason d.c. never thought she could play another.a similar thing happened with frid.when he tried to play another charcter than barnabas the audience was not respnosive.
but why do we think d.c. allowed vicki to become so marginalized by the end of her days on the show? he's cast victoria as his female lead in both the 1991 revival and the recent unsuccessful attempt so obviously he "believes" in the character. ???

the 1960's were the heyday of artificial hair.the "fall" being among the more popular items.i've often thoght that liz's towering beehive had to be hairpiece assisted.vicki sometimes dons a piece.and maggie has to be the queen of faux locks.just before she's abducted by b. she has shoulder length hair, during her capture it's an elaborate period-do,when she escapes it tumbles to her waist. ::)

i just checked out the link.it took forever to download but was it worth it! it made the 1967 liz/jason story look like some 1940's film-nior.most excellent! i forgot what a "rebelious teen" carolyn was supposed to be before the show went in a different direction.

the departure of alexandra/vicki seems to be the subject of endless lore in d.s. fandom.there seems to be more versions of it than josette's death-fall from widows hill.i just read another.on another topic a poster stated that after alex left betsy durkin was brought in to tie-up the loose ends of the character before she was written out permanantly.i was always under the impression that ms.durkin was brought in with the full intention of her going foreward with the character vicki but that she proved unpopular with viewers and the writers decided only then to write vicki out.what up? ???

but mysterious, the 1897 story lasted nine months, would dan curtis allow alex,a contracted player,to collect a paycheck for that long without using her in some capacity.ditto 1840.what was it about vicki,as opposed to carolyn or maggie, that made him feel as though the audience would only accept her as such.since she was with the show from it's first minute, wouldn't audiences tune in to see what she was up to as opposed to never seeing her again.i'd think d.c. would recognize the curiosity factor/ratings boost her reappearance would cause.

i've too always heard that alex was frustrated playing only one role(vicki).but that strikes me as odd because she left the show before it really started to travel back and forth in time on a consistent basis.the only other time period she played in is 1795 and it was vicki herself whom was sent there to witness the events of that year.in the present day eps. almost all the actors play the same roles(liz,carolyn,julia,maggie,etc.).if she had stayed with the show through it's other time travel stories the writers would have had to create characters for her.

i, of course, voted for alexandra.her elusiveness adds to her allure for me.i was unable to attend the museum of television and radio tribute to d.s. in 2001.i believe it is the only reunion alex has ever attended.where any of you guys there?if so, what was she like? :-*

i have thought that it would have been interesting if vicki, like julia, discovers that barnabas is a vampire and, like julia, works with him.since vicki and barnabas are fond of each other she would not reveal his secret and he in turn would not kill her.barnabas/julia/vicki could have made a cool "mystery-solving" team and vicki could have maintained the "nancy drewish" qualities she had early on and not become so victimized.but alas it was not to be....

hey emerald.i'm glad you're enjoying these eps.they're the one's that got me hooked.i had no idea all that was in store for me later in the run!i remember vividly the scene with vicki writing letters to herself,it was sad,it was at this time that i really began to "fall" for vicki.what the poor dear goes through later! :o

i think i'm out of the loop on this one.does the montage reflect episodes being watched now by members of the board?i thought everyone was watching them willy-nilly,but is there a group watch happening?

it would have have been cool too to have burke come back and re-claim vicki from that yucky jeff clark.at that point in the show it would have been nice to have another human around and not some stupid monster. ::)

Wasn't A.M. going thru motherhood maternity when the color eps transitioned.......maybe a factor in her mannerisms, or her ability to play Ms. Winters
no.alexandra became pregnant much later than the color transition.the show transitioned in the summer if 1967 and alex left the series in the late fall of 1968 when she did become pregnant.

it was pointed out on another topic that vicki was really "spunky" during the show's early days.savvier too.i began to notice a distinct change in vicki as soon as the show went to color.almost to the episode.her voice gets slightly breathier, her manner more perplexed, she becomes less inquisitive and self-assured and slowly evolves into a much ditzier character(but one i still adore).during the black & white eps. she's way more on the ball. :P

johnathan frid/aka barnabas collins often gets all the cred for the shows success.but the deeper i get into the grayson hall eps. the more i love her and appreciate the complexity she brought to dr. hoffman.i think she's one of the show's most underestimated players.when she screams and becomes hysterical however things get campy real fast.
i just saw the ep. where julia discovers the incomplete body in dr. lang's lab.her reaction considering she has been experimenting on a vampire for a year is totally over-the-top! ::)
silly-dillys....i didn't mean literal "bits" of roger driving the car but small shots of roger behind the wheel.btw, the exterior shots of the car driving down the road was also used when
matthew morgan tried to run vicki down.
i guess film was expensive.
but my all-time fave d.s. car crash is still the one where vicki and barnabas almost run peter bradford down and vicki becomes so "hystericle" she crashes the car.
it's cinematic genius. ::)
