that's a great answer luciaphil.thanks.i never thought about the "non-threatening part".he does meet her when she is a position of submission(jason).although liz becomes subjected to all sorts of supernatural forces i like that it's never at the hands of barnabas.he's always gentlemanly with her.and like vicki,i don't think the audience would take well to liz being killed or turned into some sort of monster.

my boss dan knows i'm obsessed with d.s. and discuss it somewhere online.he and my co-workers kindly indulge me and expressed "delight" at the vicki "charm" bought at the fest(although i'm sure they think i'm nuts).
anyhow...he thinks he can locate me online.so this is a test.if he mentions this message tuesday morning i will have to commend his aptitude! :-*

i like barn and elizabeth's characters together too patti.he does aknowledge her as his benifactor in a way and knows his place as her guest.on a practical note,he realizes that liz runs the business that supports the estate that he lives on.if the business were to fall into other hands b. could find himself without a proper home.

also, i think frid the actor paid due respect to a great actress and that shows in the way he treats joan bennett/liz.

of all the characters barnabas had interactions with on the show elizabeth was the one he always treated with the utmost courtesy.at one point or another he threatened nearly everone else and in many cases followed through.never liz.was he simply aknowledging her as his "hostess" at collinwood?or was he kind to her because he had unresolved feelings for his mother naomi, whom liz resembled?

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Grayson Hall's Hair (A Question For Her Legion)
« on: September 01, 2004, 12:55:31 AM »
but wait there's more!...kls wore the blond wig for only a few eps. but her experience with pieces was far from over.when barn is holding her captive at the old house she dons an elaborate period wig...which she continues to wear throughout her grim basement imprisonment.when she escapes and is at wyndcliff, her hair suddenly falls to her waist.she wears it like this until 1795.when the story returns to the present, she has her own shoulder lenghth hair again.
alex wears a fall during her first few weeks on the show.it's especially noticable in the pilot and in early publicity shots for the show.which is funny because her own hair rivals any piece she might have on.
and lara wears lots of pieces in the time travel stuff...but don't forget the glossy black curls she dons as cassandra. :-*

But the show had already been on this path for some time by this point.  It was the arrival of the supernatural in the character of Barnabas that altered the series from a soap opera with gothic overtones to the "horror" hit that it became.

hey rainey, i don't think this is entirely true.the 1795 story would not have had the impact that it had if it was just about a group of stupid monsters.it was about the history of the collins family.that is what made it so good.i don't object to the supernatural elements the show introduced, but during this story the family gets pushed aside and i don't think that's a positive development.during barnabas' whole first year his story was told within the context of his family.i just would have liked to have seen more of this and less 1968 monsters. ::)

I totally agree about the Adam storyline (and other storylines taking place at the same time). They're some of the worst on the show, IMO, up there with the middle and end of Leviathan. Thankfully, there were still some gems during that time period (like the introduction of Humbert Allen Astredo as Nicholas and Marie Wallace as Eve), or else the show would've become almost unwatchable...Jeff and Adam both got on my nerves to no end, and Elizabeth began to grate with her constant fear of death. I loved Eve and Nicholas though.

I loathed the way the show seemed to focus completely on the latest 'freak'...the Collins family and Collinwood were pushed to the backburner while Barnabas and newer characters took up most of the airtime, with the Old House being the central location.

After 1967, it seemed like the show didn't have that much success with the present-day plots, with the exception of the haunting of Collinwood in early 1969. Leviathans and Adam both were a bust (IMO), and the second haunting, while not bad per se, had its share of faults.

i don't have anything against humbert allen astredo as nicholas blair except that he was a totally unecessary character.why?why introduce another monster when the show had not even resolved what to do with the ones they already had?it's just such overkill.it is sad the way the collins family gets pushed aside during this period...in fact,if the actors didn't have contracts i'd be willing to bet that the writers would just have written them all out to focus exclusively on barnabas and the monster-of-the-week.this story definitely is aimed at those "kids that ran home from school" rather than at adults who might favour a more subtle, well plotted tale :(.

i'm still struggling to get through adam.i tried to "get into the groove" of these eps. but i still find them annoying.i think that if they had occured late in the show's run(like laviathans) i'd be more accepting.most show's get weaker as the years pass but these eps. immediately followed the show's best stuff so it's frustrating.and since i really like alexandra it's disappointing that her final months on the show were squandered on this dumb story :'(.

3341
did grayson wear wigs???take a gander at her in her pre-1795 episodes.i don't know what exactly to call that thing perched on her head, but a wig will do.note how her own short bangs peek out of the front.i believe that the very short hair she sports after 1795 is all hers.it's nice to know another fan is as infatuated with the show's costuming as me :P.

as far as a victoria winters legion...sign me up.she's my all time favorite :-*.

Current Talk '04 II / angelique's portrait
« on: August 28, 2004, 03:11:12 AM »
liz found it to be "angelic" but it was anything but.who painted the portrait of angelique?she was an 18th century servant.portraits at the time were very expensive.they were painted for members of the upper class.

when barnabas brings sam evans the portrait to be "aged" he gives some rather cryptic instructions.a 10 o'clock start time to begin the work and that it must be done with a "hard, sharp" paintbrush.b. tells sam that he must not question these instructions, but doesn't sam find this at all suspicious?(i guess at this point the writers decided logic didn't really need to factor into the plot).when ang comes to the evan's cottage to claim the portrait she is indeed aged(face, hands),but her 1960's mini still reveals the lovely gams of a very young woman ::).

« on: August 26, 2004, 12:58:39 AM »
perhaps some of the main characters had understudies like they do in the theater.or maybe the actress who played carolyn in that ep. understudied for all the youge, female characters(it looks like she's wearing a wig).
in at least one case one character substituted for another.during the liz/jason story vicki was supposed to have had a scene with burke at the blue whale but mitch ryan never showed up and his lines were given to joel crothers.it's a slightly odd scene since vicki and joe never "hung out" but makes more sense when you know why.mitch never appeared on the show again and...."the part of....". :P

OT, but, I haven't heard, "The part of _______ will be played by...." in sooooooooooo long; just the other day on OLTL they did that...and it took me back to my youth.
the first time i remember hearing "the part of....will be played by...." on d.s. was with the burke devlin re-casting.did they do it with sam evans, matthew morgan or willie loomis in earlier re-casts?i forget.did they do it when betsy durkin took over as v.?
