Current Talk '04 II / one fountain/two proposals
« on: November 14, 2004, 05:18:37 AM »
i just watched the episode where jeff proposes marriage to vicki...and something about it seemed familiar.moonlight, the terrace, the soft rippling of the fountain(i think even the music).why?it was in this very location that burke had proposed to her barely a year before.so we all know of course that burke's "missing" by this time(don't want to "spoil" anything)...but what about vic?does she recognize the signifigance of any of this?what did she do with the engagement ring burke had given her?

and in a related "performance",alexandra was so good in the burke story.but i noticed that in this scene she was way less "into it".i think her dissatisfaction with her role was starting to show by this time.the scene plays rather "flat"(plus jeff was just so yucky). ::)

the early part of the story did have some interesting potential(although the pitch of it was too loud i thought).and he did have a few sweet scenes with carolyn(although she's not using her best judgement to say the least).but once nicky gets involved it devolves into "creature double feature"(a satanic master race,is that correct???).it's just not sophisticated. ::)

but all this being said...i do always find scenes and elements to the show i like.

is it the white text on light gray background you're refering to?

as much as "adam" the character proper annoys me i think that perhaps i'm extra-hard on him because he's sort of a personified metaphor for what i feel is a wrong turn the show takes in 1968.it infuriates me that the supernatural characters hijack the story during this time...away from what it's really supposed to be about.they create almost a whole second cast that has nothing to do with anything else that ever happened on the show before(even barnabas drops out of site for periods of time).the first couple of years(intentionally or not)set-up a sort of mythology that this dumb story goes outside of.it's too gimiky. ::)

a great read!it's true about alexandra's hair in these episodes.she wears a massive fall...which is funny because in later eps. we see that she already possesses the most luxurient head of hair imaginable.maggie too gets that funny ash-blonde wig.she's sooo "maggie the sassy waitress",full of vinegar from her years slinging hash but true at heart.(she and vicki would have been wise to take that bus back to new york).vicki show's a preference for blouses and cardigans these days(she hasn't just yet dove head first into sleeveless).i think liz's "at home" attire is awsome, you could tell they were very impressed to have this "grand dame" with them(as i complained about in a recent post it's sad the way the character deteriorates by 1968).roger's cigarette pants are too much!(as is the cheesy prop-glass brandy snifter he shatters between his fingers in "fear").i agree that there was a strange chemistry between roger and vicki here...a bit later they very briefly toy with the idea of romance(imagine!).but a set-up between her and burke is obvious from minute one at the train station.i love vicki endlessly wandering around in that trench.the exteriors were so good(it is funny how the more successful the show becomes the cheaper it's production values).carloyn gyrating at the blue whale is priceless.

this is making me want to go back and watch from the beggining again but i have to finish what i've started ::) ::) ::).

thanks for the link...the collage was great.as i've said(probably to much)before the laura story is personal favorite.when i've watched the rest of the show(if i make it) i intend to go back and re-watch the laura story in it's entirety.
i'm also pleased that i get to see laura again when i get to the 1897 story(which should be in the next few months).

discussing the d.s. fashion is my favorite subject on earth!i'm all for reading about it...but like the "robservations" i can't quite navigate the "idle thoughts",it seems to start in the 700 episodes(which is farther along than what i've seen).is that correct?i'd love to read them from the start of the show and go foreward.

i love the cat and mouse games julia and barnabas play with each other during this time...after awhile thier relationship gets too "easy".

i couldn't agree more devlin...ms. bennett is often equisitely attired(i love the matching bow).but my favorite "liz look" is episode one's formal evening gown and jewels for "at home" entertaining. :P

i'm still struggling to get through the(seemingly interminal)adam story.the moment when i never have to look at this idiotic character again cannot some soon enough!however...

during the show's original run was this a popular character/story?and what about robert rodan?he's one of the very few actors who never plays another character.does anyone know why he was never brought back after the adam story(mercifully)ends? :P

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Voice Overs
« on: November 06, 2004, 10:23:38 PM »
I wish that they had never ceased using AM for the opening voiceovers. "My name is Victoria Winters..." was as much to me an "icon" of the show as Barn's ring, cane, or any other prop and/or whatever icon of the show. I remember not hearing it for the first time and feeling a great sense of loss.

But that aside, there sure were some fantastic post-VW opening voiceovers weren't there?
that's exactly how i felt too dom after the first post-AM voiceover.i loved that it was like a girl reciting something from her diary.i know her episode one voiceover by heart(i'm sure alot of us do).

my "quote" is part of one of vicki's voiceovers from the very beggining of the barnabas story when she still started with "my name is...".

hey patti, according to kls's book "dark shadows almanac" j.frid read the opening voice-over only 12 times.j.karlen read it 24 times.the book does a round-up of all the actors that ever did it(50 actors total).alexandra tops-out at 387 readings.

this is just me but i prefer it when an actress, not actor, reads it.

i'm looking foreward to the "dallas" reunion special sunday night.

on msnbc they run a show called "headliners & legends",sort of a mini-documentary about famous people.they frequently air a show about lauren hutton and interviewed is none other than kls.not sure of the conection but i think that they may have been "playboy bunnies" together in the mid 1960's.if you see it listed check it out.

i rather like the shoes...i'm noticing a preference for a low, squat heel(but not a flat),square-toed often with a "pilgrim" style buckle on the front.needless to say worn with sheer hosiery.

the shoes provide a satisfying "clack" in the collinwood foyer(stone floors).

for a show filmed in the 1960's there is a remakable absence of white "go-go" boots. :-*
