Current Talk '05 I / angelique and victoria
« on: January 07, 2005, 02:30:21 AM »
the withcraft topic got me thinking...why didn't angelique ever really use her powers on vicki?
she set her up as a witch during 1795 but it was generally vicki's own naivity that did her in and not something angelique did to her.

and in 1968 as cassandra ang put everyone possible under her spell to get what she wanted but not vicki.even though vicki knew who she really was and who's constant suspicion threatend her plans why didn't she just do something to get her out of the way?

vicki even tells cass off on a few occasions...why did she stand for that? [Witch_Potion_Animated]

i'm a great fan of ms.blackburn as well.she was one of the show's great underused actors.as abigail collins she really brought something special to the role.her final scene with barnabas was a highlight of the story for me.

and what can be said about mrs.johnson...i love that in a few of her early episodes the character smokes! :o

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Best Episode recommendations for newbie?
« on: January 05, 2005, 02:50:17 AM »
the massive number of episodes make it difficult to pick out a "best" episode to start with.each storyline has individual episodes that are riveting and others that are silly, dull or whatnot.

i think that episodes 1-5 or so are a must for anyone who wants a general backdrop for the show.they are way pre-barnabas but it helps to get a layout of who everyone else is for the opening of the barnabas story.i enjoyed the entirety of the pre-barnabas run but i can see some finding them dull since they are gothic but not overtly supernatural.it depends on what one's expectations are for the show and since they lasted for a year before the barnabas character was introduced it's totally up to the viewer how much they want to get involved in them.
that said,if one doesn't need to start with the barnabas episodes but doesn't want to watch the entirety of the first year i highly recommend the laura collins story(starting c/s/v/26).it's so good!it only lasted a few months so it can be viewd quickly and it leads directly into the elizabeth/jason mcquire story which is a must in that it leads into barnabas' release.

the 1795 time-travel story is also very good but without the backdrop of the months that lead up to it it might not make much sense(has anyone started watching the show with 1795?).

That Dark Shadows was at it's scariest when it was broadcast in black and white and when all you had was a certain Vampire torturing  his female victims  ?   It was great when all these other supernatural charecters came to the scene but I tended  to find it more amusing than scary..There was something about it mostly being like a regular soap in the beginning and just one  supernatural being:) any other opinions?

i could not agree more.for me the most successful stories were the laura collins story, the early barnabas story and the 1795 story for the very reason that there was a single outside threat among an otherwise normal(if eccentric)group of people.and i love that these threats occur amid "regular" soap opera stuff.i gives just enough suspence and quirky charm and you care about the characters in jeopardy.

once eveyone is a monster it's way more campy than scary or supenceful and it's difficult to become emotionally involved with the characters. ::)

although barnabas became the stand-out character on the show i think that it's a good thing that the first year ran without him.it gave the other characters time to establish themselves when later that might have been impossible.this is especially true of elizabeth.she is ,for me,one of those cornerstone characters that made d.s. what it was even though her prominence on the show eventually diminished.she had great presence and lent class to what could have been viewed as a shlock operation.

and ms.bennett was outstanding as naomi collins.she is the only character in the entire story that actually moved me to tears on a few occasions. [cryg]

a great blooper took place during the show's first months.
there is a scene at the diner...maggie is talking to someone(forget who)and roger is shortly to enter.apparently louis edmonds thought this was off-camera because he is outside the diner's(curtained)doors doing some sort of "warm-up" dance for the scene.sort of a "dance-like-a-moth" type deal.
i can't believe this made it to air. [rleyeg]

Current Talk '04 II / Re: cassangelique's "look"
« on: January 02, 2005, 02:16:28 AM »
lol!
Cheese fondue or chocolate and strawberries?  What about a stationwagon?  I think that would be a glorious finisher to the outfit is a red woody stationwagon!

classic swiss fodue.
gruyere:emmentaler:appenzeller:white wine:kirsch.

cassandra's look was so mid-sixties...but the returned angelique almost looked early seventies!

i suppose we should be somewhat grateful that the show was canceled in 1971...can you imagine if the characters had to wear the less-than-flattering looks of the mid-to-late 70's?
vicki in dorothy hammil's hairdo?carolyn in gaucho's?maggie with a perm?liz in d.v.f's "wrap-dress"?
it's all too much to ponder. [nut]

i'm not sure if this qualifies as a "cliff-hanger" but the moment during the 1795 seance when the "present day" characters froze(ignore the microphone in the shot)and the next image is of vicki standing outside the old house(in 1795)was genius.i still get goosebumps when i think of it.
if this was a friday episode i certainly would have tuned in on monday to see what was going on.

i don't really see julia and barnabas as "romantic" despite the fact that julia is obviously smitten with him.i'd place them in the non-romantic duo category.

i didn't vote in these because i haven't seen the show all the way through and have only seen two or three of theses different characterizations.

but i'm very surprised at cassandra's poor showing too.she was one of the best parts of the very uneven 1968 episodes.what happened cass? [huhg]

i'll second that DS to DA.i can assure you that everyone here loves your work!i look foreward to each new promo.

i'm sorry to hear that you're being harrased in your message book.d.s. fans can be opinionated and things can quickly spiral out of control.i look at this site as a "safe-haven" from some of the bickering seen elsewhere.everyone is always on thier best behavior here and that's why it's such a nice place.

you sound disappointed but keep up the great work on your site.i'm still greatly looking foreward to your "emmy's". [smlyg] [smlyg] [smlyg]

i imagine collinsport, maine to be full of "b&b's" not nice hotels.shabby-chic victorian mansions fixed up and run by retired couples where guests make small talk over self-serve coffee and blueberry muffins.hardly the type of place for a collins! [eek]

i saw that letter too...and i agree that t.v. guide has been very "d.s.ish" of late.a mention every few weeks...not bad for a soap opera that left the air over 30 years ago. [blackbat]
