the roger/cassandra coupling had interesting potential but i don't think that thier relationship was explored enough.cassandra was great but they hardly shared any scenes together.thier marriage seemed like a plot-device to get cassandra in the house.

i agree with you guys that this storyline could and should have been drawn out longer and given more prominence.if they knew that they couldn't give it 100% then they should have waited until another time to tell it.there was no reason why they needed to get into it at this exact moment when other storylines would overshadow it.willie needed to get maggie out of harms way during the experiment but to just drop the whole thing immediately afterwards was so lame.

even though barnabas wasn't technically a vampire at this moment that doesn't mean that maggie wouldn't have had signifigant evidence against him had she gone to the police.they probably would have thought that the vampire element was insane but they would at least have had to investigate her claim that barnabas and willie were indeed her captors.she was missing for weeks after all and if she gave accurate descriptions of the basement cell, the mausoleum, josette's room, etc. she could at least proven that she had been held in these rooms.vampire or not b. would have had some explaining to do.

as for this weak "memory erasing" device it was much too easy:
vicki is kidnapped by adam, held captive for days, visited by angelique.
carolyn lies on the slab, ready to give her "life force" to create an artificial woman, dies and comes back to life.
jeff is attacked by a vampiress and becomes her servant.

and with a few words slick nicky erases everyone's memories of these rather remarkable events
because to deal with the enormous implications of them was too much and it was just easier to pretend they never happened and move foreward with more silliness.that is such a cop out on the part of the writers. ::)

elizabeth and jason mcguire.the storyline was excellent...very tense...but liz was so unhappy during it that it was painful to watch.

vicki and jeff clark...china doll and bull.

carolyn and adam...she was beyond clueless during this story.at the very least she was harboring a murderer in her house with no regaurds to the safety of her own family.

Current Talk '05 I / maggie's memories
« on: March 20, 2005, 02:58:00 AM »
this storyline was brought up on another topic but i wanted to mention it again.
the whole story of maggie being trapped in the mausoleum and her memory of her missing weeks returning.i found it to be ultimately unsatisfying.i liked the idea of the story(it certainly was inevitable)and elements of it,especially the flashbacks, were very well done.
but i felt that the whole thing took place in the shadow of the eve plotline.it didn't really seem as if everyone was throwing themselves behind what should have been the focal story.maggie's "missing weeks" were what kicked-off the whole barnabas era of the show after all.there were too few characters involved.it was as if maggie being missing during this part of the story went unnoticed by almost everyone(except when it applied to eve).
and then how her memories were just as quickly erased was such a cop out.this particular "memory erasing" device was used alot during this time(vicki, carolyn, jeff)and it just seemed like a way that the writers could move the action foreward without resolving fundamental issues.it was too easy.any thoughts?

that said,as much as i hated the adam story,i was surprised that i really liked marie wallace's portrayal of eve. :o

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Anthony George (Burke Devlin) passed away
« on: March 19, 2005, 05:36:16 PM »
that is sad news.there are fewer and fewer of the original actors around today. :'(
i too was resistant to a "new" burke devlin when mitch ryan first left the show.i thought he was so identifiable with the role.mr.george put his own spin on it that grew on me.i've often wondered how,or if,mitch would have played jeremiah.if it wasn't for the change in actor perhaps that whole part of the story might have been told differently.and if neither actor had left i wonder what would have become of the character after 1795?the show's plotting changed so greatly during this time i can't picture burke involved in any of the storylines.

Speaking of 1841 PT....I hate that the show didn't end in the present time, with the characters it first intruduced to us, the characters audience knew and care about. That just really bugs me.
i wonder if the show's cancellation was abrupt?perhaps if they had known about it months in advance they would have returned to the present and tied up the lose ends.it does seem odd that they ended the show in another time period(and a p.t. one at that).

vicki:"mrs. stoddard...your label is sticking out and it reads BERGDORF GOODMAN."

elizabeth:"of course it does vicki dear...OHRBACH'S is only for the servant class.now i don't pay you to stand around and talk...go do something."

the character of peter bradford(in 1795)didn't bother me but when r.d. became jeff clark in 1968 he wore on my nerves intensely.too bossy.too angry.too yucky. :P

« on: March 17, 2005, 02:55:32 AM »
the characters i most genuinely care about are vicki, elizabeth, carolyn and maggie.meaning that thier welfare as human beings is important to me(as far as fictitious t.v.characters go ;)).things didn't always turn out so well ::).
i grew to greatly appreciate julia and angelique but didn't really "care" about them as much.

There's a scene when Vicki is at the Old House, waiting out a rain storm, I think, and she and Willie are talking about the upcoming costume party.  Vicki compliments Willie on his restoration work..  She comments that "I never see you smile anymore" and he replies that he doesn't have much to smile about.  She says he "deserves to have some fun" and he responds that people don't always get what they deserve and some get things they don't deserve at all.....referring to what he knows about Barnabas' plans for Vicki.

Willie frequently resorts to hysterics when trying to protect Maggie.  But this calm, quiet scene involving a despairing Willie and an unsuspecting Vicki is so much sadder.

i agree rainey that this scene was quite touching.especially since at the time vicki had considerable reason to dislike willie.i also think that vicki was at her absolute best during this part of the show.these episodes were remarkable and you can tell that alexandra was still being challenged by her work at this point.she's breaking away from what had been a rather one-note,goody-two-shoes character before this and bringing some complexity to victoria.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Will the REAL Angelique please stand up!
« on: March 15, 2005, 02:55:45 AM »
i haven't seen those episodes yet either(and may never, the idea of 1840/1841pt is too far removed from what i really like about the show to hold much interest for me)but isn't the idea of a barnabas/angelique love affair one of the oldest storytelling cliche's in the book?:to have long standing rivals/enemies suddenly profess thier love for one another.in terms of a television show it's often employed to bring fresh story ideas to a worn-out formula(think sam and diane).
perhaps by this point in the show the writers felt that they had gotten all they could out of barnabas and angelique as enemies and thought that this could lead in a new direction(especially since kls had left by then and a new "josette" clone was not possible).they probably didn't count on the loyalty of most fans and their refusal to accept this unlikely turn of events(or that people like us would still be analyzing the story 35 years later).
