Calendar Events / Announcements '05 I / reference in wwd
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:01:39 AM »
i don't know how many here are familiar with women's wear daily.it's the fashion industry's daily trade paper.twice a year(after the spring and fall collections)they publish a glossy magazine highlighting the season's trends.

the fall issue just came out.the editors tried to come up with clever names for the various sections(for instance a story on gloves was titled "glove compartment").in a nod to the season's somber pallette(lots of black)they titled a section "dark shadows".
i don't know who came up with that but it's funny that a reference to the show would come up in a publication devoted to high-end couture and assume that people would get it.

it is tempting to view the show as an anthology(not a serial)but even as such you hope that as one phase of the anthology progresses to the next it will maintain the same level of quality.

i've only seen about half of the show's run but when i was watching the earlier storylines like laura collins, early barnabas/julia and 1795 i knew intellectually that what i was seeing was unrealistic, implausible, preposterous but the level of storytelling and characterization left me with the feeling that i was seeing something excellent.

i've been slogging my way through 1968 because i love the characters, sets, music and mood of the show but in truth it's never been as engaging for after 1795.i intend to watch 1897 because everyone says it's so good but after that i'm going to step back and reassess the situation.storylines like leviathan and 1841pt don't hold much interest for me.

i think dan curtis and co. took the easy way out when they saw that supernatural elements brought in big ratings(for a while)and didn't really care how they treated the show's characters.

great read luciaphil.

as coincidence would have it i just recently saw these episodes again.i was having a yen for a pre-barn and just popped it in.they were really cool episodes.you're right about all the emotionalism.everone was really "on".i love it when when vicki rails on liz.our girl doesn't often raise her voice.
and the scene at the diner with maggie and mrs.johnson was great too.didn't maggie assure mrs. j. that the mayonnaise was as fresh "as a daisy"?

the exterior shots of roger and vicki walking around collinsport were cool too.they really put alot of effort into that sort of thing early on.it's interesting that they never did any exteriors of liz.perhaps because she was a shut-in at this point.

as penny pointed out in a recent post it's surreal to think about what becomes of most of these people later on.here visiting a cannery is as exciting as it gets. :P

episodes that revolve around elizabeth's fear of death/being buried alive are pretty dreadful.

a waste of joan bennett's time and talent. ::)

it's even more ironic that even though the popularity of the barnabas character is indirectly responsible for the misuse of the 1966 characters he's not actually the one doing most of the damage.except for his early victimization of maggie it's the assorted and sundry monsters that come after him that really chew these people up.
barnabas loved vicki and his family so it would have pained him as much as anyone to have them suffer so.
i haven't actually seen the episodes where jeb hawkes throws vicki off widow's hill yet.but i have a question.
why would they "kill off" a character who had already left the show?how does vicki factor into the leviathan plotline?weren't the producers always hoping that alexandra moltke might be lured back to the show?
good point penny...the way the original characters deteriorate has been one of the most heartbreaking elements of the show for me.

i think that the writers could have gone foreward with the supernatural storylines that had become popular without turning the main cast into mincemeat. :(

i love carolyn and angeligue(whom i actually thought was prettier as the brunette "cassandra")but i have a real soft spot for laura.so i guess she's my favorite.

btw...would maggie qualify as a brunette or a redhead?

3068
barnabas(to himself):"what's this?it looks real but this tag sticking out says DYNEL FOR OHRBACH'S WIG SALON?!"

3069
burke(whispering):"vicki...why is that odd historian wandering around the house in her nightgown?"

vicki(whispering):"i don't know burke.call me crazy...but something tells me that woman is never going to leave."

i like the collinwood study too...i feel like it disappears after awhile but maybe i just haven't seen it lately.

roger was given a very fancy bedroom set during the cassandra story.when the room reappears later it's much smaller.they changed people's bedrooms around alot and probably thought no one would notice.
when various characters stay at the evan's cottage in 1968 they de-do maggie's room as a guest bedroom and act like maggie's room was someplace else ::).
i think that vicki, carolyn, david and liz are the only characters who always have the same rooms.

i never went to an ohrbach's(we had jordan marsh where i lived)but it is sad that so many of the great old department store names are now gone.

i read in the paper recently that federated dept. stores merged with may company.so most of may co.'s stores will probably become macy's(yuck!).that includes lord & taylor and marshall fields.
that's what happened with names like jordan marsh and i.magnin.macy's! >:(

Current Talk '05 I / dark dream house

let's try this.

an eccentric millionaire(and d.s. fanatic)has left you his fortune.there is however a stipulation in the will.

he wants a special house to be built.he wants you to build a house comprised of five sets from the show.the most skilled craftsmen will be employed, using the finest materials(real mahogany panelling, silk damask draperies, leaded glass windows)and specific to the most minute detail.
the rooms do not have to have come from the same original structure or from the same time period.you can mix-and-match your favorite sets to create your own dark dream home.there will be a small kitchen and bathroom but these five rooms will be the main living spaces.
seen from the outside it will appear to be a normal, contemporary house.only you and those you invite in will know.

i would choose the collinwood foyer and drawing room, josette's room, laura's cottage and the main room of the evans' cottage.

what rooms would you pick?
