one reason why frid didn't become a major horror movie star after ds could be that the whole climate in hollywood was changing drastically during the late 1960's and early 1970's.
there was a definative move away from artiface in favor of a gritty new realism.look at the kind of films that were being made at the time.with his debonair, cultured manner frid probably seemed like the product of another time(even though he was still relatively young).it's difficult to imagine him in the type of gross-out slasher horror films that became popular in the 70's.
t.v. being somewhat behind filmaking i could have seen him being a major star in a prime time mystery-type show.

the show itelf was somewhat quaint when you think about the tumultuous political and cultural climate of the era.

Current Talk '05 I / evening wear in collinsport
« on: May 14, 2005, 04:35:54 AM »
tonight i watched an episode that featured some lengthy scenes between angelique(as 1968 vampiress)and eve(as whatever).

for those who remember they were both rather elaborately decked-out.
why the show's costuming decided that diaphinous chiffon evening gowns were the garment of choice for lady vampires and artificially created women is anyone's guess.but something about eve's black chiffon number seemed familiar to me.

i could almost swear it was elizabeth's episode one gown slightly modified.since liz never wore these remarkably swanky rags again after the first few episodes i wonder if dan curtis thought he could pinch a few pennys and recycle them as the wardrobe for an artificially created monster and thought no one would notice? ::)

except for the voiceover and the serial format i don't see any similarities either.i don't even really see the lynchian element.d.h. is nowhere near as dark and surreal as anything lynch has done.it's more black-comedy mixed with straight-foreward soap.there's nothing gothic or supernatural going on at all.

think "knot's landing" not "twin peaks"(or dark shadows).

thanks for the thoughts guys.you brought up alot of interesting points.

when i first posted this topic i wasn't thinking about it objectively.i was coming from an emotional point of view.
because of the huge volume of episodes we've all spent a staggering number of hours with these people and vicki's the one i grew the most attatched to.

since i'm watching this for the first time it's like she's leaving now and not thirty odd years ago.

with all that's been said i still can't think of the character as being complete toast.if a young governess was no longer a viable character then why would they bother to bring maggie in to replace vicki?they could just have eliminated that role and had maggie do something else.

and alexandra at the fortieth anniversary fest would be divine!

i'm with gothick on this one...the 1966 laura collins story is awsome!very near close to being my favorite storyline so far.

andre,it sounds like you're watching the dvds and these episodes won't be out for awhile but if you feel like investing in a few old-fashioned videos they're worth it.

i'm very excited to see laura's return in 1897.

the pre-barnabas episodes are available from mpi in video format.they are called the "collector's series" and begin with the first episode and progress until the barnabas episodes begin.then they become the "original series" for the rest of the show's run.go figure.

this is assuming mpi hasn't discontinued these volumes.

mpi told me that they will release these episodes on dvd after they finish releasing the rest of the run.time will tell.

miles,

i like your choice B.she was smokin' hot!alexandra moltke's not really my "type"  ;) but she was one seriously foxy governess.towards the end of her days on the show she wears her hair down alot and she's extra sweet.

anyways i try not to overthink or overanalyze the character too much.i just like to see her. [love10]

since the show seemed to make itself up as it went along i like to think that the deterioration of the writing for vicki was not a deliberate act("let's shaft this girl!")but an unintended slight that snowballed as time went on until it was almost too late to turn back.didn't dan curtis always want her back?

but it's true that dr.hoffman took over as "straight man" to those crazy collins'.i like julia alot and she was an integral part of the story(i prefer her before 1795 in a more adversarial role)but her prominence does become somewhat overblown(and remarkable in it's nepotism when you know the backstory).

perhaps dan curtis now realizes who butters his bread...i don't imagine there is a large and lucrative fanbase for "supertrain". :P

over the weekend i received what are,for me,a very signifigant group of episodes.original series volume 79...the final alexandra moltke vicki episodes.

i started watching the show from episode one("my name is victoria winters...my journey is beginning...").for various reasons it's taken me over three years just to get to this point in the show.so victoria winters has been a part of my life for a long time.

true, the character deteriorated greatly after 1795 but she was still around and for whatever reason i found her to be a comforting presence on the show.a quiet note in a cacophony of over-the-top characters.her placidness(often criticized)reassuring.i felt like when i was seeing vicki i was watching "dark shadows".

i know i can always go back and re-watch her episodes but i wanted to get through this whole thing once before i re-watched favorite storylines.even though barnabas became the stand-out character from the show i feel as though vicki was at it's heart and when i watch future episodes her absence will be a large void for me.i went into this knowing that she was only around for about two and a half years but i guess i got more attatched to her than i thought.

plus she was just so darn easy on the eyes.

anyways i couldn't bring myself to watch the episodes.the box is still sitting unopened.at the risk of sounding like a maj drama queen i'm really kind of sad. :'(

i know alot of you here consider vicki to be a total ditz but did anyone else experience a similar sense of "loss" when she exited the show.

they took great liberties with historical accuracy throughout the story.
the witchcraft trial being among them.also the notion that barnabas might have contracted the plague.this came up in a topic several months ago but there wasn't a diagnosed case of plague in the u.s. until 1900 when it appeared in san francisco's chinatown.

they seemed to use "olde time" new england as a catchall for witchcraft, superstition, religious fanatacism and assumed the viewer wouldn't really remember the actual years of such events(or care for that matter).

also,a house on the massive scale of collinwood would not have been constructed in the 1700's.it's obviously a gilded-age mansion built by a robber baron in the late 1800's.

dr. hoffman:"well vicki...um...i would have thought that they would have explained this to you girls at the foundling home but...um...sometimes it's a girl's "special time"...and see, well it has "wings"...and it's extremely absorbant...and um..."
