sad indeed.many actors on the show simply defined thier roles and mr.elcar was among them.like clarice blackburn a small but distinctive presense.

whenever sheriff paterson is due and one of the other actors shows up i'm always slightly disappointed. :(

Current Talk '05 I / carolyn,maggie and joe
« on: June 11, 2005, 01:13:26 AM »
since collinsport is such a small town and everyone seems to know one another i assume carolyn, maggie and joe must have known(or known about)each other most of thier lives.

since carloyn didn't go away to private school they must have even gone to high school together(although joe and maggie seem to have a year or two on carolyn).was a rivalry between the spoiled and popular rich girl and the daughter of the town drunk already in progress?especially when it came to that cute joe haskell!did maggie have her sights set on him even then?i wonder if maggie even had to drop out of high school and get a job to help care for pops, fueling further her resentment?

when talk comes up about a "new" version of d.s. i think it could be cool to do a "prequel" that focused on the teenage years of these characters.sort of a gothic "90210".they must have had fascinating backstories.they could include the jennings brothers and even a young harry johnson(who would so be the token gay character).
perhaps there could be a parallel storyline that covered vicki's formative years at the foundling home.

i would so watch this show! ::)

not all of the collins' have a strong tolerance for alcohol.

remember when carolyn was dating buzz during her "rebellious teen" storyline?
she was the absolute stupidest drunk ever! [nut]

people often complain about the d.s. styles but i love them.

the fashion was one of the first things that attracted me to the show.i was like "why do these women who live in this nowhere town in maine have up-to-the-minute sixties fashions and hairdo's?"(thanks ohrbach's :-*).i love how stiff the fabrics are.some of the dresses look like they could stand up on there own.and the color combinations are insane!(please don't forget maggie's "warhol" inspired floral-print quilted maxiskirt). :P

as a child of the 1970's there was a moment that me,my sister and my mom all had the same "dorothy hammill" style bowl cut.the sixties styles are way better!

Considering what a big Alexandra Moltke fan you are, I think it's definitely gonna be time to invest in a new TV when Betsy Wetsy shows up.

gee...am i that obvious? ;)

i just recently watched alexandra moltke's final episodes and i didn't so much want to kick the t.v. in as throw myself across it and weep! ;)

i never thought about dan curtis holding a grudge against her.i got the impression he must have cast betsy durkin out of sheer desperation.it was obvious from these episodes that her departure was extremely abrupt.there was no sense of finality to them.vicki stormed into the house, ran up the stairs, exchanged words with julia and that was it.ms.durkin premiered only three episodes later with scripts that were probably already written for alexandra.there must have been virtually no time to audition new actresses.

b.t.w. i haven't watched ms.durkins episodes yet...but i'm sensing a kick-the-t.v. moment coming.i'm so smitten with ms.moltke i can't imagine anyone else playing victoria. :P

i thought that this qualified me for a stay at wyndcliffe but once in awhile one of the characters(usually vicki)makes its way into one of my dreams.
it's never a dream about the show per se but the character is just in the background of whatever else i'm dreaming about.

the only movie i ever have nightmares about it "the excorcist".it tormented me as a child and freaks me out to this day.for that reason i have to read mark rainey's posts with my hand over the bottom of the screen because his avatar is a clip from the movie. ;)

Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '05 / Re: On the Town -- Episodes 85 & 86
« on: June 06, 2005, 11:27:26 PM »
thanks luciaphil.

these were the exact episodes that first got me interested in the show.i first saw them at a time when sci-fi ran the show at 11:00pm so that has to be at least five years ago...does anyone remember when the show aired at that time?
at the time i was sharing a brownstone(as gothic as any d.s. set)and sometimes i used to watch t.v. with my landlady so she caught these episodes with me.when i started to watch on video she always asked me about two things...joan bennett and that girl locked in the attic.after awhile it got too complicated to summarize in a few words as we all know.

even then it amused me how carolyn kept going on about how she was having "the best night of her life" when it was so lame-o!she was a girl of very limited experience at the time. ::)

thinking about these episodes always makes me very nostalgic.

another sort of funny scene during this storyline is when liz has this cheesy cardboard "architect's model" of her mausoleum made up.

roger is so disgusted by the whole thing he angrily smashes it to bits! :o

kind of OT...after having the same cable service for more than 3 years i just discovered i get the food network.it's way up in the 90's and i just never ventured that far on the remote.i love cooking shows so i'm glued to it.today i caught this chick sandra lee's show.i knew i'd heard her name before and thought it might be here and sure enough...

today she made a "chili omelette" that had like two eggs and a pound of chili dumped on top of it.served with a spicy bloody mary. ;)

you're right luciaphil.she's scary. :P appologies for the off-topicness

thanks for the information guys.

although liz suffered a similar fate in the 66' laura story it didn't irritate me as much because,in addition to liking that storyline better a whole,it was much briefer.cassandra's spell lasts for months on end.plus liz gave laura a real challenge.one of my favorite scenes ever is when liz confronts laura at her cottage.the cat and mouse dynamic is so good!and them what happens when she returns to collinwood...well,it's sort of what we're talking about here.with cassandra liz just sort of relents.

it's interesting to know that julia doesn't further investigate liz's condition when she knew something odd was going on.does liz herself know what caused her to suffer from this curse?

i like the comment about liz's attire after her escape from wyndcliffe...traveling a hundred or so miles through the woods after an escape from a mental-institution?who wouldn't look as though they just stepped out of a beauty salon? ::)

Current Talk '05 I / liz buried alive
« on: June 03, 2005, 04:52:07 PM »
this came up over in "luciaphil's idle thoughts" but i thought it was starting to get a little off-topic so i'll post this question here.

when nicholas relieves cassandra/angelique of her powers why is liz still under her spell?i think she's even visited by angelique in a dream which re-establishes the curse after ang is "something else".

i haven't seen the show all the way through so how does liz come to be out from under this spell?i'm assuming she doesn't spend the rest of the series run with this preoccupation with death/being buried alive.

Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '05 / Re: Hide-n Seek -- Episodes 83 & 84
« on: June 03, 2005, 12:55:38 AM »
i agree that the "steely-jawed" mrs.stoddard of these episodes bears scant resemblance to the elizabeth of the buried alive storyline.

when i think about that story i really can't believe just how bad it was.i'm sort of surprised that joan bennett didn't put her foot down with that one and demand something better.even though the show was clearly mr.frid's by that point ms.bennett must have still had some "clout" with the producers.maybe an actress of her age was just glad to have steady employment which is kind of sad.

it's nice that she got to play more interesting characters in other time-periods.

barnabas doesn't mention angelique to anyone in the present time until after 1795.strange.it's not until after vicki buys the painting of angelique that he thinks to mention it to julia.

months later julia says something to willie about ang and he'd never heard of her either(and, like julia, never questioned barnabas about how he became "what he was").

of coarse none of this had anything to do with the writers not knowing how he became what he was until probably a few days before the storyline started. ;)

while i was in line at the grocery store yesterday buying chili fixins' i perused the current issue of "soap opera digest"(why anyone actually buys it is beyond me)when i stumbled across a familiar face.mr. barnabas collins.i read it quickly but i think the writer of the article is a "closeted" male soap opera fan but when d.s. was on he felt he could be "out" with his friends because the show involved monsters and such.

i read it quickly but if you see it check it out. :P
