Current Talk '05 I / Re: The June 27th Episodes (Spoilers!)
« on: June 28, 2005, 12:12:46 AM »
thanks for the cool slideshow mysterious!
your analyzation of the june 27th episodes is interesting too.even though barnabas had been introduced by episode 262 the show was still paced much as it had been in episode one.but by episode 523 we are essentially seeing a different show entirely.it's hard to believe the two episodes were filmed only a year apart.i haven't seen episode 785 yet but it seems even more "out there". :P

what was happening on june 27th 1970?

Calendar Events / Announcements '05 I / OT...Suspiria
« on: June 24, 2005, 05:36:52 PM »
last weekend i found a four dollar copy of suspiria at the flea-market.
i had never seen it but heard alot about it.suposedly the ill-fated 2004 version of d.s. was stylistically inspired by it.plus it featured joan bennett so i took it.

the person i bought it from warned me not to watch it alone because it was so scary.now i didn't find it all that scary but loved the style and mood of it.the super-saturated color palette and musical score gave it a very distinctive feeling.and the sets and locations were eerily beautiful.

joan bennett didn't have as much presence in it as thought she would.she was almost a cameo.but i did think she had aged alot since d.s. and the movie was filmed only a few years after d.s. left the air.they revived liz's beehive hairdo for the film which was a nice touch.
according to the bennetts,an acting family the reviews for joan were not kind(one critic likened her to a "wax-work princess margaret" and another "a programmed grand-mother doll"). :o

what do you guys think of the film?

i have been fortunate in that the last two fests were in the new york area.
but i just can't swing a trip to california for this year's. :(

i'm thrilled that the 40th anniversary fest will be in n.y. next year.i hope that my dream girl will honor the occasion with an appearance...but i know that's unlikely. ::)

now i wonder...

between the wig under discusion, maggie's various wigs and hairpieces, vicki's fall, elizabeth's wiglet, cassandra's black wig and julia's 1967 piece i wonder if collinsport had a fine ladies wig salon?or did they have to order from eva gabor's catalog? :P

thanks gothick,

of all the bizarre things on d.s. mrs.j's wig was the wierdest.i like to think of clarice blackburn arriving at the studio, seeing that damned thing on the block, grimacing slightly but knowing the show must go on! :P

i forgot this.

at it's conclusion julia sends barnabas away to wyndcliffe for safe keeping.this really doesn't make sense.
for obvious reasons julia would need to be involved in his treatment.she couldn't just send him there and expect nurse so-and-so to understand his needs.and who knows what he might say?

plus they act like no one would ever think to look for him there.it's julia's hospital for goodness sake.after collinwood and the old house where else would anyone be?

they did a similar thing with willie and elizabeth.who cares for these people at wyndcliffe after julia takes up permanant residense as collinwood busybody? ::)

these were the episodes i most recently watched as well.

i thought that the dialogue between barnabas and angelique was very crisp and well written.i love how formally everone speaks to each other here.the idea of barnabas being under ang's control was interesting.if anything i think maybe they didn't get as much mileage out of it as they could have as it only lasted a few episodes.

i don't want to get spoilered so i'll just say that mrs. johnson's hysterics upon walking in on a certain situation were priceless!and there was a tense scene where barnabas was being questioned by sheriff patterson(unfortunately not played by dana elcar here).it was funny that out of the blue barnabas and vicki shared a "strange mental bond" that lead her to him.

another thing i noticed across these episodes was just how willful and impudent both angelique and eve were.they "all powerful" nicholas blair continually threatened to wipe them off the face of the planet but they just turned around and did whatever they wanted to anyways.like spoiled teenage girls.
i didn't really buy that nicholas started to let his whole diabolical scheme slide so he could persue a flirtation with collinsport's favorite waitress.don't get me wrong.i like maggie but the idea that he would abandon his master plan her doesn't gel.i thought that whole sub-plot was contrived to give kls something to do.

but the sad fate of joe haskell during this story was indeed a bitter pill to swallow.ang was meaner here than she had been in a long time. >:D

here's another vote for josette stepping out of her portait at the old house.that was when things really started to take-off on the show.

i also liked during the laura collins story when she was putting whatever it was that her spell was on people there was a sort of three layer affect going on:laura's eyes, flames and the person being put under the spell.plus the great music that went with it.

but i found the affects during the dream curse to be the most breath-takingly cheesy so far!

castlebee...i haven't seen the jeb hawkes storyline yet so i was basing my observation on early carolyn who was really rather flighty.but i do look foreward to seing carolyn grow.

it would be awful if collinwood was sold and subdivided.someone at the fest last year who had been there told me that the actual house(the carey mansion i think)has fallen into terrible disrepair. :(

i wonder if it could have been aranged so that barnabas could take possesion of the property since he ain't going anywhere.

but i would never speak of darling carloyn in the same breath as paris hilton! ;)

when i was in high school i had lots of girlfriends who did the whole goth thing."nice 'n easy's" natural blue black was my personal shade for a long time.and we went to go see siouxie and the banshees...and the cure...and the smiths...and new order.you get the drift.i was definitely aware of this look as it related to the punk/new wave music scene.

but when and how did it become instantly identifiable "vampire look".what was funny about the episode of CSI was that the show's producers must have known that the way to communicate to a mass audience that these people fancied themselves vampires was to deck them out like this.

and it's funny that no one on dark shadows ever dressed like this.i guess ohrbach's didn't peddle goth wares. :P

last night i caught an episode of "CSI".part of the plot took place amongst a group pf people who fancied themselves "vampires".they all had the same rather distinctive look.

we've all seen it.dyed black hair...black lipstick...black nail polish...black cloths.tatoos.vaguely gothic-inspired dinky-do silver jewelry and little vials of blood.people who claim to be into withcraft and satan worship often sport a similar goth/punk style.

where exactly did this look come from?how did it become a universally adopted "i'm into vampires" symbol?how does dressing like you're on your way to a joy division concert symbolize vampirism?
i've never seen this in any filmed portrayal of vampires.certainly not on d.s..when angelique was a vampire she was all white chiffon and golden sausage curls.the witches and other "dark" characters wore the same acid-bright cloths everyone else was wearing.
how did this style start? [blackwidow]

assuming that carolyn didn't continue to date monsters and her life continued on a more normal path i really don't see her ever running the family business.
she just didn't seen to have the interest or focus.while crafty, carolyn didn't seem especially intelligent either and certainly not well edjucated.plus she hated collinsport.i think after elizabeth and roger died caroyln and david would have sold off what remained of the business and moved on.

seeing how she went from one high-drama relationship to the next i think caroyln craves drama and excitement instinctively.it's a core part of her person.she probably would have lead a rather dilettantish life.flitting from one activity to the next.maybe taking up painting or some sort of "artsy" time-waster.shopping for expensive cloths and hitting the spas.and of course an endless string of husbands and flings. :P

whenever i read about this subject i can't believe our girl would ever get involved in something so scandalous...miss winters is a girl of virtue!

in dominick dunne's book "justice" he devotes a chapter("fatal charm")to the von bulow trial.he actually speaks quite highly of alexandra(isles at the time).there is one reference to her being a "soap-opera actress" but doesn't mention the show by name.
