ian,

i know exactly what episode you're talking about.i just saw it very recently.you're right that the quality of acting there was excellent.

i loved it when the character you're refering to was compared sarcastically to "katharine of russia". [hall2_wink]

that sounds way cool darren,

could you arrange to have it screened at next years fest?it would definitely be a highlight.

i own NODS on video but have actually never seen HODS.they screened it at midnight at the 2003 fest but i was too sleepy to stay up for it. [8371]

if they show it next year i'll make the effort.

i too consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to see the show from the very beginning.

the way the show was packaged for sydication(and also the way the videos and dvds are released)starting with barnabas' release cheats viewers of some excellent stories.

i know i would not have enjoyed the later storylines nearly as much if i hadn't had a solid background context in which to put the characters and much of that is established before barnabas' arrival.

since i'm not otherwise interested in tales of vampirism and such it's fortunate that episode #85 was the first episode that i caught.the characters hooked me.if i had originally stumbled across a later episode that focused heavily on one of the supernatural characters i might have turned it off thinking "monster show" not my thing. when i saw today's slideshow for episode #85 i had good reason for getting a bit nostalgic.

it was the very first episode of dark shadows that i ever saw!i'll never forget it.i saw it at a time when the sci-fi channel aired the show at 11:00pm.i remember being completely mesmerized by it and it was the starting point of this whole thing. [hall2_rolleyes]

i commented on it extensively at 'luciaphil's idle thoughts'...which disappointingly seem to have stopped. [hall2_cry]

i think i'll dig it up at watch it at 11:00 tonight.

does anyone else remember the very first episode they saw?

Barnabas: You know Julia, sometimes I just feel like a blurry, fading memory...

Julia: Ah, yes, Barnabas...I know just...how you feel.  But, thanks to television re-runs, 21st century technology, and our loyal fans we may both be immortal!

brilliant castlebee!

i like to think that in 100 years people will still watching and enjoying and discussing these characters. [hall2_tongue]

patti,

while laura was indeed offered the cottage as a place to stay(in both 1966 and 1897)it's intersting to note that jeff clark was not offered the cottage or for that matter any of the numerous bedrooms at collinwood.i think that probably had to do with the social mores of the era.since vicki and jeff were romantically involved(but not yet married)it would have been "improper" for them to be residing on the same property.

instead he is invited to stay at the evans' cottage(basically a two room shack).but again, when sam dies, jeff offers to move out post-haste saying something along the lines of it "not being right" for him to stay there any longer.

again,i think that's why julia never moved into the old house even though she spent most of her time there.it would not have been "proper" for an unmarried lady to share a house with two men.things like that still mattered then.especially on a daytime drama(no matter how outrageous)that relied on it's advertising dollars from housewife-friendly products like dish soap and laundry detergent.

strangely carolyn offered the cottage to chris jennings(with whom she was romantically involved)but perhaps because amy jennings was staying at the main house and carolyn's mother owned the property it wasn't so much of an issue.plus they didn't really put carolyn on the same moral pedestle they did vicki.

now i bet all that is more commentary than you bargained for. [hall2_rolleyes]

penny,

you bring up an interesting point about laura.where as angelique shows up at collinwood like a bad penny throughout the centuries she is all about a particular member of the family who like herself lives through different time periods.laura is rather indescriminate about her choice of spouse...as long at it's a collins. good ones buzz,

so true about the door never being locked at collinwood...but what with people showing up twenty-four hours a day why bother?
considering the contents of the old house basement the door is rather carelessly left unlocked much of the time.

there was however one time that i can recall at least the mention of a holiday.when laura collins first returns in november or december of 1966 and makes idle small talk with maggie evans at the diner maggie asks her if she's in town for "the holidays". [_snowman_]

it's ironic that they went to the trouble of setting the show in a place like maine(that has very distinct seasons)and then doing absolutely nothing to try and replicate that.it's coats and blazing fires in summer and lush greenery all winter long!

when laura is and isn't a pheonix is one of those d.s. mysteries i'll never totally understand.

is the laura who married roger and gave birth to david and ended up in a mental institution really the same laura who returns to claim him?or was she a real human being that the pheonix laura either takes over or replaces?was the "real" laura the woman who's burned body was found in pheonix,az.?

she also doesn't seem to be a creature of particularly great powers.she comes on strong but is easily thown off her game and always seems to be on the brink of destruction.perhaps that's because she returns to collinwood towards the end of her 100 year life cycle.

speaking of which.laura only comes around collinwood for a few months during both of her storylines.so besides creating some minor drama for the collins family what does she do with the other 99 years and 9 months of her exisistence? [hall2_rolleyes]

Current Talk '05 II / Re: Collinwood Exterior Models -- 1990
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:48:13 PM »
this is slightly off-topic but whenever either the 2004 or the 1991 series come up people always start to project the series well into the future.

characters like adam, quentin and jenny as well as storylines like 1897 and 1840 didn't even appear on the original show until well into it's run and it was a daily show that produced over 1000 episodes.a weekly prime-time show only produces about 23 episodes a season.so in order to tell a story that made any sense they would first have had to establish a solid storyline in the present.then,as in the 1991 version, would perhaps have gotten into some of the 1795 stuff as well as it's sort of critical in understanding characters like barnabas, josette and angelique.

but the show would have to be on for many, many years before they could really get to these later storylines.perhaps decades.most prime-time show's simply don't last that long. [hall2_tongue]

claude,

i too had given up on continuity in the series but this was just such a glaring inconsistency that it literally prompted me to dash from the t.v. set to the keyboard in frustration.

even though they never thought that these episodes would be seen more than once didn't they think that maybe their viewers had some sort of memories of what had been told before and might not say "wait a minute...laura was never marrried to jeremiah."? [hall2_rolleyes]

even today soap operas only air once but they generally maintain some level of continuity.the writers of d.s. really played fast-and-loose with the storytelling.

Current Talk '05 II / laura stockbridge collins?!
« on: October 15, 2005, 03:11:34 AM »
i'm sure i'm going to get majorly spoilered across this topic but there has been a development that has put me in quite a quandry.

i'm currently watching the 1897 storyline(specifically dvd set 14)which deals with laura collins.upon meeting her in 1897 barnabas recalls another laura collins(in an orange riding habit!)that he knew as a child in the 1700's(who is also of course the same laura collins who showed up in 1966 to claim david).

then he goes on to tell a tale that goes completely outside what had been any established fact upto this point.
specifically that his uncle jeremiah(who remember was supposed to be close in age to barnabas according to what was told in the 1795 storyline)had a wife before josette.laura stockbridge had been his first wife!

this threw me into a tailspin!there had never been any mention of this "first wife" ever from what i can recall.i watched the first laura collins story some time ago but from what i can remember she had been l.murdoch stockbridge then l.murdoch radcliffe and was not a collins until she married roger(presumably sometime in the mid-1950's).this throws the whole "cannon" out of whack majorly!

are there any thoughts/explainations that might help me out here? [hall2_huh]

according to the d.s. almanac the exterior shots were filmed in newport, rhode island,scarborough,n.y.,tarrytown,n.y. and essex connecticut.so my guess would be that the shots of roger were in newport since that's right on the ocean.

the exterior shots were so cool i wish they had continued with them but apparently they became cost-ineffective.they did take some exterior shots of barnabas at the old house(the spratt mansion).they must have been strictly publicity stills since they never appear in any episodes.i read somewhere that this house burned to the ground in the late 1960's(probably shortly after the stills were taken). [hall2_sad]
