Current Talk '05 I / Re: most annoying d s character
« on: November 06, 2005, 07:16:00 PM »
i'm with you on adam.i've complained about him here(ad nauseum)but it infuriated me that the writers took this dumb, boring character, who had nothing to do with anything that had ever happened before, and allowed him to hijack the entire show show for nearly a year. >:(

when this topic was first posted i had yet to discover the charms of ned stuart and dirk wilkinson.both characters can take pride of place along side jeff clark in the most annoying category.roger davis was just the worst!

vicki sure didn't wear it all on her sleeve. ;)

good topic. ;)

i have always perceived victoria winters to be the 'classic gothic ingenue'.that's the way that the character was written.

when i first got into the show i was stunned by the negative and even angry reactions can sometimes get from fans.i've always found her supposed "i don't understand-ish-ness" to be greatly exaggerated across fandom. a situation only worsened by comments that alexandra moltke herself made in 1968 during a time when she was(quite understandably)unhappy with her storyline.

the mention of allison mackenzie is important.she was played by mia farrow whom also of course played the doomed rosemary woodhouse in 'rosemary's baby'.like vicki...classic gothic ingenue.if these characters were 'in on it' there would be no story.

it's important to remember that this type of girl was conceieved in the pre-feminist age.they weren't meant to be "dumb" but innocent.in today's context it doesn't play but the 1960's were a different era.

but back to topic.i haven't seem many of the other soap ingenues mentioned here but indeed vicki might have become a more extreme example of the stereotype once the show went supernatural because the way the plot was set up she always needed to be slightly out of step with what was happening around her.

in a story top-heavy with villians she was the single character on the show who was never "bad".i always found that endearing but of course it's a matter of opinion. :P

thanks midnite,

i'll look for the book as well.when i met marie at the fest last year i found her to be delightful.i always enjoy her characterizations even when i don't love the storyline(adam/eve).

it's funny when one's interest in d.s. spills over into other areas of one's life like choice of reading material.
this past year i read 'the bennetts an acting family' which is certainly not something i would have read if not for joan's participation in the show as i've seen few of joan's and none of constance bennett's movies.
the same goes for diana millay's book on the history of halloween.it's not really a subject i'm terribly interested in but the fact that it was written by ms.millay made it a 'must read'.

the same will go for marie's book.theaters' not my thing...but a book written by 'mad jenny collins' certainly has it's appeal. :P

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / changes to profile
« on: November 01, 2005, 02:14:37 AM »
lately i have noticed some changes to our personal profile options.

for one it used to tell when a member was "last active".that seems to have disappeared.

another was the "show topics started by this member" option.i found that option to be particularly useful because often when i have a question about the show i forget if i already asked it and what the replies were and that was a handy tool rather than having to re-read all of my posts(which are now in the hundreds vs. the 50 or so topics i've started).

why were these options changed?

there is a scene during 1897 when magda comes to collinwood bearing a silver bullet filled gun.
I don't know why this sentence made me crack up, but it did!  ;)  Maybe it was the "bearing a silver bullet filled gun" that did it.  Only on DS! [hall2_grin]

so true!sometimes when i'm watching i have to stop myself and say "am i really so into this insanity?"

of course the answer is always yes! [hall2_rolleyes]

Current Talk '05 II / Re: laura stockbridge collins?!
« on: October 29, 2005, 09:08:34 PM »
i know i'm overthinking this but...

laura always leaves collinwood under distressing circumstances and returns to an atmosphere of suspision and hostility.

but since her ultimate goal is to claim her children(not have affairs)wouldn't it be in her best interest to stay on good terms with the collins family,be discreet, and leave with her children(whatever that really means)when no one is looking?

does she maintain more 'human' characteristics right up until the end of her life-cycle?quentin collins is a looker and all but by surrounding herself with so much drama doesn't laura thwart her own goals? [hall2_rolleyes]

not an all-time favorite but i love it when a little scene sort of comes out of nowhere and stays with you.

there is a scene during 1897 when magda comes to collinwood bearing a silver bullet filled gun.she tries to gain entry despite judith's firm protestations.there was just some great writing and back-and-forth between the actors here and bennett and hall were both in top form. [hall2_tongue]

no brick throwing here but the main reason that i'm disappointed that d.s. is not airing anywhere at present is that potential new fans aren't being exposed to it.

one just doesn't randomly start buying expensive dvds of a 1,225 episode series unless there was already some interest there.

i wasn't even born when d.s. premiered and would never have developed an interest in it if not for that original exposure on the sci-fi channel.

oh,and welcome mary elizabeth!

Current Talk '05 II / Re: If You Could Recast....
« on: October 27, 2005, 03:23:05 AM »
'of course' i wouldn't recast anyone.

but i'm intrigued by a few of maria merriweather's choices.

barbara stanwyk could have been good as elizabeth.like joan bennett she had that rich, throughty voice and hollywood pedigree.although ms.stanwyk(like joan crawford and bette davis)had that touch of the 'working girl' about her where as ms.bennett seemed refined, slightly aloof.

a young and sexy and redheaded ann margret could have been good as carolyn too.she'd play spoiled and insolent well.

mia farrow would have made a good victoria winters as well.the character she plays in 'rosemary's baby' was similar to vicki in many ways.innocent, naive and trusting.that's how both of the characters were written(although in today's context that's often perceived as 'clueless').plus i think both actresses(ms.farrow and alexandra moltke)bring a certain poigniency to their roles.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: Nancy Barrett and her wacky dream sequences...
« on: October 25, 2005, 01:30:20 AM »
speaking of wacky dream sequences...

i've been watching dvd collection 14(part of the 1897 storyline)and it features not just one of the most bizarre dream sequences but perhaps one of the strangest episodes of the show period.

i don't want to "spoil" anything but let's say it tells of a dream of jamison's that features, among other things,a hand puppet,a birthday cake and present-time carolyn, elizabeth and roger.

i'm sure you guys remember what i'm talking about.it was so weird!it had a really saturated color palette that hightened the dream-like quality.i had to watch it about five times because i felt like i was hullucinating...which of course i wasn't but it was intensely weird. [color]
