for me one of the show's most moving scenes actually does involve vicki's reaction the burke's death.

shortly after liz receives news of the plane crash she has a scene with vicki and mrs.johnson.vicki is going on about the planned renovations to the part of the house that she and burke will be living in and how happy liz has made her with the offer to allow them to live there.liz is nearly unable to deliver the bad news and when she does vicki faints as i recall.

later vicki encounters barnabas on widow's hill and there it's obvious how deeply she was affected by this tragedy. :'(

after 1795 jeff was barnabas' rival for vicki's affections.i don't know how they would have worked burke into the storyline here at all.

ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE!

me thinks that perhaps i posted this topic in some haste.over the weekend i've been watching the progression of this storyline and was stunned to see that at some point they changed the devlin-era venetian blind set-up to proper victorian lace curtains.

however in the spirit of tradition the number "24" on the door leading to the set is clearly visible.i liked that. ;)

i haven't thought about this story in a long time but this post reminded me of something i hadn't thought about when i was watching it.

vicki is drawn back in time by jeff clark/peter bradford.but in the past wasn't peter bradford dead?
remember vicki found his grave in 1968.and i seem to recall julia finding some town records that confirm he had died in 1795.

so how was he alive to draw vicki back to the past?how was he alive and well when barnabas traveled back to save her? ???

i skipped ahead of the unfortunate ms.durkins' episodes.i just couldn't take it.
as for looking dumpy she had some shoes to fill.in this viewer's very biased opinion ms.moltke was breathtakingly beautiful.

i'm not sure what to think of ms.groves.she wasn't bad but as someone pointed out here recently that trip back in time was one too many.it seemed to really have no point to me.the storyline had clearly shifted to quentin's haunting of collinwood.that's where all the attention was being focused.the storyline with barnabas going back in time to save vicki came out of nowhere and didn't really change anything in the present or affect the rest of the story.at the end of the day vicki was still back in time.

the only reason to tell this story i think was if they could have gotten alexandra back for those episodes.it might have provided some closure for the actress and the character.but to bring in yet another actress for 3 episodes didn't really make sense. :P

nancy:"why wasn't barnabas invited to this wedding?"

joan:"barnabas is just a temporary character nancy dear.this episode features the show's stars." ::)

it's true that liz and vicki share several scenes that have a real "mother/daughter" quality.in some ways liz is more tender with vicki than she is with carolyn whom she can become quite exasperated with.

the scenes dealing with vicki and jeff's ill-fated wedding are made even more bittersweet in that they are also alexandra's final episodes. :(

so true buzz.

it vexed me as well that this plotline was never resolved.they "hint" that betty hanscomb was vicki's mother.at the same time they "hint" that liz was vicki's mother.i don't think the writers themselves knew and then the whole show went in a different direction anyways.

it always amused me when that picture was seen back at the evans' cottage.i remember nicholas blair casually eyeing it.no one ever mentions that it's vicki! ::)

a policy of "waste not want not" must have been in effect with the props department.

it's interesting to note that on 'today's' episode in 1967(#366)the storyline travels back to the past and in 1969(#889)it returns to the present.

p.s. vicki's little mustard colored suit was a personal favorite.pitty abigail had it burned. :P

« on: November 20, 2005, 07:19:04 PM »
i don't watch during the day and i don't watch during the week.when i get a new video or dvd i save it to watch over the weekend.then i watch at night.sometimes till all hours.i just like it better at night.

when i was watching on video i'd usually watch the five episodes then stop.now that i've switched to the dvd format it's easier to just keep watching.it was taking me forever to get through the show on video.over three years just to get to the final vicki episodes.i upgraded to the dvd format with the start of the quentin storyline.i'm glad i did because the 1897 storyline lasts for so long i didn't want to spend a year watching it.

my "game plan" is to watch through the 1970 present time episodes.then decide what favorite storylines to go back and re-watch.i might just start from the beginning again.for whatever reason the 1840/41pt episodes don't interest me much.

as for the dvd's they are expensive but are actually cheaper on a per-episode basis.

What is 'room 24' ??
I remember Tim Shaw's room in 1897 but it didn't strike a bell.  What else was it used for - what other rooms?

connie,

where do i start?
'room 24' was first the suite of rooms that burke devlin took at the collinsport in.that number was on the door.the set later shows up as tony peterson's apartment, then joe haskell's apartment, then someone else's i think(ned stuart?),then it show's up here in 1897 and in 1970 i think paul stoddard ends up there as well.i could be forgetting someone.

they reconfigure it each time a little.but they never change those damned drapes! ::)

i've been watching dvd collection 15(the 1897 storyline)and just when i thought 'room 24' couldn't reappear again it shows up as tim shaw's room at the collinsport inn.this room is sort of like the roger davis of sets.
here the door that used to lead to the kitchenette is now the entrance to the room so the number '24' is not visible but i'd know this set anywhere.the window treatments are always the same.loose weave taupe drapes backed by venetian blinds.

so the question is this.since they went through the time and expense to design the elaborate victorian interiors used throughout the 1897 storyline how expensive could it have been to simply hang period-specific drapes in this room?

speaking of the collinsport inn they also utilize the lobby set here.that certainly took me back.i half expected victoria winters to walk in with her plaid suitcase fresh off the train from new york.in fact the early quentin storyline and the 1897 storyline both utilze sets not seen since the early black and white episodes.the collinsport inn.the police station.the caretakers cottage.what do you think they did with these sets when they weren't being used?were they sort of collapsable and could be folded up for storage and then easily set up when needed?the studio could only have been so large and in edition the the main sets always in use(collinwood.the old house)there must not have been space for the dozens of other sets occasionally used. :P

so true prof.i forgot about that painting.

i remember laura's giant head coming out of it too.that picture caused so much drama!
i think sam did another one didn't he?the one that burned when laura caused sam to set himself on fire.

someday i really want to go back and re-watch this storyline.

Polls Archive / Re: Middle period (?) Maggie's personality.
« on: November 18, 2005, 02:36:15 AM »
like most of the original characters i thought maggie was a bit ill-defined and all-over-the-place during this "middle period" on the show.

there were storylines that never really went anywhere:the business with josette's earings.then the whole thing with maggie being trapped in the mausoleum and remembering the events of the previous year.she convieniently 'forgets' all of it should it interfere with the rest of the storyline.i never bought the maggie and nicholas plot either.it came out of nowhere and i think was thrown in just to give kls something to do.

funny but all of our girls were using really bad judgement when it came to men during this period.maggie with nicholas, carolyn with adam and vicki with jeff.not a one worthy of them!

at the same time i still have a fondness for maggie during this period because it's sort of the last time she's really 'maggie' before she becomes 'magtoria'(tm.mabelique). :P
