i always think it's interesting that the character of josette collins(or at least her ghost)was firmly established on the show way before anyone had ever heard of barnabas collins.it's such a classic case of the 'chicken and the egg'.

i had forgotten that liz had a run in with her too.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: How DS Fests effect your DS viewing -
« on: December 20, 2005, 02:31:50 AM »
when i attended my first fest i was speechless when i first saw our actors.

but after having met and spoken to them several times i have a more easygoing attitude towards them.
but they really haven't affected my viewing one way or the other.i can seperate the actor from the character.

sadly several of the actors whom i'd have really liked to meet are no longer with us and a few more never attend the fest.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: MUST!
« on: December 20, 2005, 02:18:28 AM »
when i was watching over the weekend i was reminded of this post and just how often they say one "MUST" do something or other.

i think they did this in part to highten the sense of urgency of whatever situation they were dealing with.it just sounds more dramatic to say "YOU MUST!" rather than they less showy "you have to".

one "has to" pay the phone bill.but one "MUST!" burn a witch, stake a vampire, create artificial life.

another thing to consider is that the show was produced at a time when a proper command of the english language was still considered important.especially for a group of people who were, for the most part,well-edjucated members of the upper-class.good grammar and good manners mattered.

the way things translate from paper to the spoken word can be tricky too.the writers were trying to come up with good dialouge and perhaps didn't realize how it might play when spoken.i notice this with myself here.i try and articulate myself thoughtfully...but when reading the posts later they sometimes sound flowery and pretentious. [rleyeb]

but i love how formally everyone on the show speaks.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: In Defense of Roger Davis -
« on: December 16, 2005, 02:55:56 AM »
when i first got into the show about four years ago i too was somewhat shocked at the level of hostility directed at roger davis...until i got to his storyline.

funny.peter bradford didn't bother me at all.but as soon as he came back as jeff clark he drove me insane!
perhaps it's not entirely mr.davis' fault.the character was supposed to be confused and frustrated because he didn't know who he was.but the way it played he always seemed angry.he then carried that trait from role to role and that's why i always see him as jeff clark no matter what character he's playing.

the fact that he was paired upon arrival with alexandra didn't do him any favors either.their acting styles were too different.her placidness contrasted to his beligerence was jarring.

another reason he might be so reviled is that there is a widely held belief in fandom that alexandra disliked working with him intensely and that he might have been a contributing factor in her decision to leave the show.
whether or not that's true only the key participants really know but grudges run deep with d.s. because the fans are so loyal to the characters they loved.

i guess i'm not that surprised to see her in these social circles either.i mean the fat royalty checks that she receives from 'dan curtis productions' must have afforded her a very opulent lifestyle. [winkg]

Um, there's no royalty checks from DCP from what I've heard.  Not even from MPI, which is why when the tapes first started coming out David Selby, on Joan River's talk show, wouldn't hawk them.  Because, as he stated, "I'm not getting paid for those so I won't promote them."

She's got money from her family is why she's in these circle.  ;)

i realize that she comes from money.

i was being facetious with the comment about 'royalty checks'.i thought that was obvious. [undb]

Our Victoria has hardly aged a day.  I'm not surprised she is in these social circles.  After all, I don't think she ran into Claus von Bulow at the supermarket.

i agree.alexandra is as striking as ever(although at this point i wonder if the box of "nice n' easy" natural black isn't in the vanity).

one never know what one will stumble across when perusing the internet...

if anyone is interested in a very recent photograph of our girl the 'newyorksocialdiary.com' covered an extremely swank party for writer dominick dunne held on october 25th.there among such swells as carolina herrera, judy peabody and wendy vanderbilt(!) is a photograph of the still quite lovely alexandra moltke isles.

who knew ms.isles moved among such rarified circles?i knew she came from some sort of 'old money' but apparently she's still a player.give it a look. [winkb]

what if it's a specific character that you're partial to.

barnabites?
victorians?
hoffmaniacs?
lizbians?
quentenials?

i agree with what mysterious said about it being something of a good thing that most people don't know what i'm talking about when the d.s. addiction comes up.i'm not instantly labled "geek" as some other cult show devotees are.i'm not remotely into any other vampire/horror/fantasy stuff so most people don't know what to make of it.when i tell them it's a "soap opera" they just sort of accept that. hi patti.

the super-bizzare 1897/1969 dream you speak of was recently under discussion here.it was the absolute weirdest!

you're right that this "party" took place in a dining room but the room was actually the drawing room at the old house set up like a dining room.it wasn't a seperate set.

elizabeth was also contemplating taking a nosedive several times during the jason mcquire blackmail plot.

someone always showed up and prevented it from actually happening.

i loved this set!

it's easy to see why one could think of this space as a "breakfast room" since no kitchen appliances are ever seen.no stove.no sink.no refrigerator.
but it's true that they are seen using the room for other meals.

b.t.w. it's strange that in a house as grand as collinwood there is no formal dining room.at least not one that is ever seen or spoken of.in a house like this the kitchen was seen as a servants' place and the family would not have taken meals there.perhaps breakfast or lunch but certainly never dinner.

was the dining room in the "closed-off" part of the house?

i remember one episode in 1967 when carolyn was under a certain "influence" and she and julia are squabbling and carolyn rather snottily informs julia that the family dresses for dinner and the cocktail hour and if julia wants to take part she'd better follow suit.it was caroyln as spoiled heiress/vampire assistant at her very best!

Current Talk '05 II / Re: There's a lot of drinking going on...
« on: December 10, 2005, 07:23:17 PM »
back then they used to consider alcohol to be medicinal in certain situations.on the show whenever someone faints or goes into some sort of shock the first thing offered is a glass of brandy.

the do do alot of drinking on the show.even the very non-alcoholic characters think nothing of brandy in the afternoon.but back then drinking didn't have the same social stigma that it does today.remember martinis at lunch?today anyone drinking at lunch would be widely considered to have a serious problem with alcohol.

i seem to recall one episode where the sheriff comes to the old house to question barnabas about something and barnabas being the gentleman that he is offers the sheriff some sherry.can you imagine offering the police alcohol if they came to question you today?

someone here said something recently about sam evans getting sober at some point.
now i remember that during his final days on the show after that nasty bit of business with cassandra his drinking was not a factor but was there ever a point when it was stated decisively that sam was actually "sober"?

my absolute favorite d.s. drunk was carolyn when she was dating buzz during her "rebel without a clue" storyline.she was the absolute stupidest ever!

Current Talk '05 II / nancy's neck
« on: December 08, 2005, 01:50:33 AM »
during the 1897 storyline barnabas makes quite a feast of charity trask.something about this gave me deja-vu.

more than any of the other actresses on the show barnabas seemed to have a real taste for the nancy barrett characters.
carolyn.millicent.charity.1970pt carolyn.i wonder why?

i haven't seen the show all the way through but after the early maggie evans stuff i can't recall him ever biting any of kathryn leigh scott's other characters.was this guilt for the way josette suffered?since barnabas and whatever character nancy was playing at the time were often "related" doesn't this make his taking of her blood to be rather disturbing and a touch incestuous?

did he ever bite lara parker?joan bennett?grayson hall?

i wonder what it was about nancy barrett that made the writers think that her characters were so suitable for consumption? [spam1]

so true.

joan does get upstaged by some of her co-stars but i can't imagine the show without her.
i've been pleased recently that she gets to show her chops a bit as judith collins during the 1897 storyline.

elizabeth collins stoddard is one of my absolute favorites.
