if i'm remembering this correctly it was 'amontillado' sherry...not to be confused with 'claret-cups'. ;)

i wasn't going to reply to this topic since i haven't seen the revival series but when i read 'videoscope's' review of it i was reminded of why i've always had some resistance to it.

the original was "cheesy",johnathan wasn't "sexy" enough, grayson was "frumpy and over the top",alexandra was a "dummy".one hears similar comments alot when the revival is under discussion.

i just don't think that slagging the original does the revival any favors.any interest i might have ever had in the revival series was long ago squelched.

p.s. i'm home from work today sick as a dog so maybe i'm just crabby. [sick2]

the 'cliff-hanger-within-the-episode' thing is some really bizzare storytelling. ::)

when i watched these episodes i really enjoyed them but reading these summations remind me of how mind-bogglingly boring they could be.

when mpi does release these on dvd i wonder what the reaction will be from people who have only seen the 1967 and on episodes.

i'm on my "maiden voyage" as well.

i've watched from episode one and i just completed dvd volume 18(episode 941 being that volumes final episode).when i was watching on video it was taking eons to get through this thing.the switch to dvd has speeded up things tremendously.that's a good thing because i really want to go back and re-watch some of the earlier stuff but have set this task for myself to get through it once.when i get a new round of episodes i'll watch them a few times and then move on to the next.i rarely re-watch out of sequence.

i cheated twice.i skipped the late 1968 fake-vicki episodes and a small chunk of the late 1897 storyline because the petofi stuff started to bore me to tears.

i intend to watch the show through the 1970 present-day episodes.1840/1841pt don't really interest me much.
after watching the 1897 story(which in my opinion went on for way too long)another time travel story is too much for me.i prefer the present-day episodes(this isn't to say that some day i might not change my mind and watch those episodes).

just a thought but perhaps the collins family and the other "normal" characters were supposed to represent "us" the viewing audience.

barnabas and julia knew all but the rest of the characters, like us,gained bits of information on an episode-by-episode basis.because the situations were so preposterous they just didn't see the "big picture" and couldn't put the pieces of the puzzle together themselves.then,as i said earlier, once that particular crisis was over with they acted like it had never happened or were somehow influenced so that they "forgot" it.

my feelings on professor stokes was that he was certainly aware of the fact that something highly unusual was always going on at collinwood but i never got the impression that the whole 'vampire' thing had fully fleshed itself out to him.especially since during much of their interaction barnabas was not actually in the vampire state.

she also had a small role in roman polanski's incredibly creepy film "the tenent".

this is the first i've heard of ms.winters' passing. :-[

i never thought about it but it's true that julia was never seen at the 'blue whale'(other than the scene mentioned here that i haven't actually seen).

some characters seemed to live there.burke, sam, joe, roger, jason and willie certainly frequented the place.
even "good girls" like vicki, carolyn and maggie seemed to be always up for a drink and a spin on the dance floor.

in general the supernatural characters didn't seem to have much of a fondness for the place but i can recall a few episodes where barnabas and nicholas drop in for a drink.i always think for some reason they are out of place there. :P

good topic.

it's interesting to note that many of the main characters besides julia and willie actually did "know" barnabas' secret...and then convieniently "forgot" it when the plot dictated.

maggie knew.vicki knew.carolyn knew.david was highly suspisious and certainly on his way to knowing.but the plot dictated that all these characters "forget" it or at least have their attention otherwise focused.

it worked out this way for most of the supernatural plots.as soon as it was over everyone acted like it had never happened and in many cases never spoke of it or appeared to have any recollection of it whatsoever. ::)

welcome back arashi!

if you haven't seen the jason mcguire storyline(which includes the episode set in 1949 when we see what happened between liz and paul the night he tried to leave her)you should give it a watch.it's excellent.

as for david i'm currently watching the leviathan storyline and david just seems too old to act the way he does.
the scene where david and amy go to the antique shop to "play" with alexander really rings false to me.an adolescent boy doesn't "play" with small children.his scenes with the similarly aged michael seem more realistic.

i also don't think a boy of that age here would still be in the charge of a governess.it must have made perfect sense to put kls in this role but by this point david is too old.

b.t.w. david had two of the most seriously foxy governesses ever.do you think it affected his perception of women the rest of his life?in his choice of girlfriends did he always choose miniskirted, fall wearing, perpetually perplexed orphaned young ladies?was he always trying to "save" them from the type of unfortunate fates of the girls in whose care he was supposed to have been. :P

mysterious,

perhaps i haven't been paying as close attention to this as i should.is barnabas the only person under the leviathan influence actually aware of pauls bargain and what it means for carolyn?are liz, david, amy and the todds in the dark about what their mission is and are just blindly following instructions?

i'm not 100% clear on this point.i like to think that liz would not knowingly ever put carolyn in harm's way even under an influence this powerful.

i haven't seen the show all the way through so i really can't vote but i agree with some of what is being said about this character.

as a malevolent ghost quentin collins carried that storyline completely.obviously he was pivotal during the 1897 storyline.nearly everything that happened somehow revolved around him.

but from what i've seen of the post-1897 storyline they didn't really come up with a compelling raison d'etre for the character other than the fact that the actor that played him had become tremendously popular.after the amanda harris business the character seems sort of adrift.with jeb hawkes as the show's new bad-ass things got a bit top-heavy. :P

i'm currently watching the leviathan episodes and one thing about them that surprised me was that the whole chris jennings/werewolf plot basically picked up where it left off before the 1897 storyline began nearly a year before.

remember the show has a habit of abandoning old plots when new one come along.after 1795 nearly everything that had happened before was tossed aside and the storyline went in an entirerly different direction.

i had assumed that something would have happened in 1897 that would have somehow reversed the curse and that part of the plot would have been over and the focus would have been primarily on the leviathan story.in this barnabas' nine month oddesy in the past was sort of pointless(although david was made well again).

the werewolf plot seems a bit like left-overs here.

i don't remember cassandra ever saying that she had been a student of prof. stokes for any specific length of time.

she didn't actually appear at collinwood for a couple of weeks after vicki returned to the present.not until after barnabas and vicki's hospitalization following the car crash.perhaps it was during this time that she made her move to the "present".

i just can't imagine her being in collinsport before that and not knowing that barnabas was there.

2774
i could be wrong but my impression of it was that cassandra/angelique followed vicki back to the year 1968 and didn't exist in the "present" at all up until that time.

if she had she wouldn't have had to come up with such a dodgy cover story about her background.

nicholas blair said several times that he allowed her to enter the year 1968 for the specific task of destroying barnabas.so before that she was wherever thier kind hang out between earthly visitations.hell i suppose.

vicki:"julia lately jeff has been calling me his little 'pumpkin'.can you think of why?"

julia(sarcastically):"gee vicki i wonder..."
