« on: February 03, 2006, 04:46:44 AM »
i've been thinking about this topic alot myself lately so it's interesting that it should come up now.

i just completed dvd set 18(the first half of the leviathan episodes)and i was surprised that angelique appeared in only two out of fifty episodes since the storyline returned to the 'present' after the 1897 storyline.
she wasn't quite as prominent during 1897 as i thought she would be either.

there was just something about the nature of the character that prevented angelique from becoming one of the regular,day-in-day-out-in-almost-every-episode-characters.

she needed to do her work and then she disappeared for extended periods of time only to reappear later unexpectedly and usually in some different guise.unlike other supernatural characters like barnabas and quentin who got worked into the day-to-day operations of the show(whether it made sense or not)angelique required some element of surprise.

so i guess her importance wavered back and forth during the run of the show(except during 1795 when she was key).

i grew up in new england as well but i don't remember 'brewster's'.

in our town the department store was called 'miller's'("meet you at miller's" was the slogan).in boston of course we had 'jordan marsh' which has sadly departed and 'filene's' which is similarly about to become history.it's so sad that all the old regional chains are gone.they really used to be a source of pride for a town.

b.t.w. i rewatched the episode where maggie goes on about her paisley dress and indeed the place of purchase was 'shepherd's' not 'brewster's'...my bad. :P

because someone(barnabas?)describes the time that the leviathan's inhabited the earth as a time when there was only "energy" not pysical matter i pictured the monster to be some sort of amorphous blob.perhaps just energy,or gas,or light.not something tangible or identifiable

it always amuses me when something sort of comes out of nowhere and becomes a major plot-point on the show.

case in point.i've been watching the leviathan episodes and apart from everything else going on suddenly everyone is spending an awful lot of time shopping at BREWSTER'S.a hitherunto unmentioned department store.

maggie proudly holds up a new dress(a dull paisley affair in 'harvest gold' hues.sleeveless with a big, dumpy bow on the front.it's just not kicky enough for mags)and tells carolyn of a "blue silk she would love".david comes across a newspaper ad that announces that BREWSTER'S is open nights till christmas(a very rare reference indeed)and then sneaks out to run an important errend.megan seems to stop by BREWSTER'S daily.elizabeth, suspicious of a BREWSTER'S box in the antique shop,is informed by carolyn that everyone in collinsport must have a box from BREWSTER'S and that hundreds of people shop there every day!even monstrous leviathan michael, jealous of a new sweater that david has, demands that megan go to BREWSTER'S and get him one.

i don't know why but it cracks me up that with all of the bizzare things going on here people have time to do something really ordinary like shop at a department store.

i was surprised several episodes later to see maggie's above mentioned dress on mrs.schuyler rumson.did ang hit the same sale at BREWSTER'S?
in general they outfitted angelique strangely in the present.she's about the same age as nancy and kathryn but while they were styled almost girlishly angelique can get kind of dowdy(and that's saying nothing of her garb during her stint as a vampire). ::)

i "day-tripped" it at the 2004 tarrytown fest so i wasn't really reliant on the hotel services but even so i was stunned at the location's lack of convieniences.it was sort of in this depressing office park setting in the middle of nowhere.why was this location ever chosen?

even after the 2003 brooklyn fest i vowed never to shell out the $$$ for the banquet ever again.no "stars" were seated at my table, for some reason i recall the video presentation was canceled and the meal itself was the classic "rubber chicken dinner".hospital food and unless i'm remembering this wrong no wine. ::)

very interesting.

this storyline is so controversial.

this is just a thought but because the 1897 storyline lasted so long i wonder if fans had just gotten used to the show being set in the past(which in and of itself is something of a novelty)so when it returned to the "present" and that element of it was over it read as "boring".i read some comments that it seemed like a regular "soap opera" which of course it didn't when set in another time period.

if barnabas hadn't returned to the present when he did and this storyline had been worked into 1897 i wonder if it would have been so reviled?

i live in brooklyn and there are some fun things to do.

there is a very nice museum(world class egyptian collection for the laura collins in you)and a botanical garden both of which are only about four subways stops away from the hotel.

i'll post more specifics closer to the time of the fest.

i'm in agreement in that this isn't reading as 'sci-fi' to me.

it's certainly weird and different than any other storyline but it's still 'gothic' in my mind.there isn't anything more gothic than the antique shop set.it's classic horror stuff.

i also kind of liked barnabas' brief return to evil ways.the character had become sort of a goody-goody and i appreciated the menace that he brought to his early work on the show. >:D

i was enjoying this storyline but now i'm sort of worried...'wild and wooly' is not a place i enjoy on d.s..i prefer tighter storytelling.good or bad the first half of this storyline was pretty tight.

this all-over-the-place plotting is part of what drove me insane during the adam story and what wore on me slightly towards the middle/end of 1897.

b.t.w. i haven't yet experienced it myself but i gather that somebody refers to jeb as a "cheap insufferable pig!". [pork]

i'm surprised myself that i liked these episodes.in general i prefer the earlier part of the show.
like i said i have only scene about half of it so i can't say yet what my opinion of it's totality is.

but i do know that i could never despise anything more than the adam storyline.it was almost a fatal blow for me.that it followed what i consider to be the show's best stuff made it even worse.i enjoyed 1897 but don't hold it in quite the high regard that i do 1795.

i made what was something of a mistake with the show.because i watched from the first episode i allowed myself to become very emotionally attatched to the original characters.especially vicki.so when the adam story came into the forefront and these characters were given very weak storylines i took it to heart.so after the adam storyline was over i vowed to watch the show with a different objectivity and take each storyline on it's own terms and not really compare it to the earlier part of the show because it just became so different. :P

i recently completed dvd set 18 which takes us to about the mid-point of the leviathan episodes and introduces us to jebez hawkes.

i felt like this character's introduction was in many ways strikingly similar to the adam storyline.

obviously the surrounding situations were completely different but in many ways the two characters parallel one another.

both characters arrive in a "child-like" state(adam mentally and jeb physically)and rapidly achieve adulthood.
both characters are willful, impetuous and self-centered.they both develop intensely rivalrous relationships with barnabas who is in many ways responsible for their very existance.both are fixated on carolyn.both weild power by threatening people barnabas cares about.

in some ways this felt to me like a vastly different telling of the same basic story.

that said i like this storyline thus far more than i thought i would.i've always heard such negative things about it.
do i think that the plot is ridiculous?absolutely.but i'm enjoying it's telling.these episodes have a distict creepiness and tone that's all it's own.i love the antique shop set.i like that barnabas and julia are at odds again.i like frosty leviathan liz.

i hated those annoying leviathan brats.i think paul stoddard was something of a wasted opportunity.quentin seems adrift and without much purpose.

i'm only about half way through it so i'll save my final judgement(the later part of it does sound really dumb)but i enjoyed these episodes alot. :P

so true!

i just watched an episode during the leviathan storyline where julia casually disinterred yet another coffin like it was all in a day's work...and of course it was empty!

where is collinsport law enforcement when all of this is taking place?or at the very least that old caretaker?
isn't this illegal?and laborious?and time consuming?

everyone acts like it's nothing to just dig up graves on a whim. ::)

this topic always seems to get sticky so i'll take myself out of it except to add this...because you know the d.s. costuming is a subject that i can never shut up about. ::)

i really never saw grayson hall as dowdy.back when the show was filmed people dressed differently from the way they do today in two profound ways.

a.)in general people dressed more formally.

b.)they dressed in an 'age-appropriate' way.

so we didn't have people who run around in sweatpants.and middle-aged women(like ms.hall)didn't try to show up their teenage daughters with fake tans, breast enhancements and "juicy couture" track suits.

what was she supposed to wear?i always think that julia's cloths(with a few exceptions)look expensive and chic.
well-tailored suits, coats and dresses(which by the end of the show's run get quite short)finished with a proper handbag and gloves.what's not to love? :P
