Current Talk '06 I / Re: Sabastian "Jim Morrison" Shaw

i agree that many of the sixties fashions have something of a "timelessness".what dates the show more are some of the colorations(lime green being a favorite)and the beauty trends(think falls and false eyelashes).

fashionwise the show probably ended at the perfect time.some of the trends of the mid-to-late seventies would not have served our characters well at all.colorwise the palette shifted towards nuetrals and earthtones and those would play as drab against the interiors.the psychadelic color combinations of the sixties made for more of an interesting juxtaposition.also hemlines went to mid-calf and then it was pants...and what's a s.y.t. on d.s. without a mini?and can you imagine frye-boots,gauchos and even(gasp!)jeans?

and oh those seventies "do's"!carolyn with a 'dorothy hamill'?vicki 'farrah fawcett-style'?maggie with a crimped perm a'la barbara streisand in "a star is born"?i think not! :P

i haven't met sebastian shaw yet but i have been watching the 1970 episodes and i've been thinking alot about this topic myself.

i can't get over how groovy these cats look.style really changed for men in just the four years since the show premiered and these episodes.contrast buttoned-up types like burke devlin, frank garner and dr.guthrie to characters like quentin, jeb and bruno.with their purple eyeshadow, muttonchops and "amadaes" hairdos they look like creatures from another planet.barnabas and roger continue to dress like proper gentlmen however.

i also noticed that there is a tremedous amount of fur being worn across there episodes.was there a fur sale at BREWSTER'S?angelique gets what looks like ocelot and golden mink.elizabeth persian lamb with a chinchilla collar.olivia correy fox(to be worn over paisley silk lounging pajamas).even carolyn gets this hideous patchwork fur minicoat.

the boys get in on the act too.jeb gets that shearling lined leather biker number and bruno gets this ugly beige fur coat too. :P

Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '06 / Re: Loyalty binds me -- Episodes 115 & 116

they do outfit vicki strangely in these early episodes.they seemed to be stuggling with what this character should dress like.later they stumble across the sleeveless,a-line dress thing and something about it must have resonated with the show's producers because after a certain point that's all she ever wears. ::)

as for vicki's gams we don't see much of them.i've been watching the 1970 episodes and the hemlines here reach panty-grazing highs.if alexandra has stayed with the show i wonder if she too would have been given such miniscule skirts and dresses or if the demure nature of the character would have dictated that she remain in the more modest above-the-knee lengths she wore during her time on the show?

this is sort of off-topic but because they are "cult" shows with a fantasy angle d.s. is often lumped in with shows like 'doctor who' and 'star trek'.

both of these shows have been remade.especially 'star trek' which spawned several t.v. spin-offs and helped create a "world of star trek".

now this is just me but i'm glad that d.s. exists as a perfect time-capsule.i'm glad it was never spun-off into a "world" of cheaply produced, syndicated fantasy shows that clutter up the saturday afternoon t.v. schedule.
i think that would have been a shame.

i would welcome a new version of d.s.(in the form of a t.v. show or movie)but it would have to be really well produced and well done(i'm still waiting for that tim burton vision).to do anything less would cheapen the original i think. :P

i so love the laura collins storylines!

in many ways they were the show at it's most inventive.where as the other supernatural characters(vampire, witch, werewolf)were recognizable in human form in many legends i had never heard of the pheonix in human form before this show.diana millay was awsome as laura!

the 1966 story is an all-time favorite and when the character leaves the 1897 story it loses something for me.

these sound great...i'm getting jealous.

does anyone know if they will be available at the fest this year?is there a link i can go to for information?

i'd love to see figures of julia, vicki, liz etc...but i wonder if figures of the female characters will read more like "dolls" than "action figures" and be likely to turn off male toy collectors?

Current Talk '06 I / Re: where the heck does quentin live?

i don't know why i'm obsessing over this today(perhaps snowed in and bored). ::)

i agree with what arashi said.it would have been a pain to build a new set for this character but it should have been done.
especially when they took the time to build very nice, detailed sets here for the antique shop, the rumson house and the carriage house.

mysterious,i'm ashamed to admit that i don't know how to "self spoiler".when a post of mine has been spoilered in the past it was done later by one of the mods.i'll have to take a look at the 'testing 1-2-3' section and give it a try.

i agree that quentin might have wanted to move back into collinwood once he remembered who he was but it wasn't really up to him.if elizabeth didn't invite him to stay there it was out of his hands.so it was the sloppiness and inconsistency of the writing here that annoyed me.it was like they felt that they didn't have to bother with normal storytelling techniques.

things in general get almost incestuous towards the end of this plotline with virtually all of the characters living on the collinwood estate.jeb(and bruno?)living at the carriage house.chris(remember him?)still apparently at the caretaker's cottage.megan moves in to the main house(how weird was that?).

and it seemed like most of the people who actually lived at collinwood(liz, roger, david, maggie, mrs.johnson)were convieniently absent much of the time so that characters like quentin, bruno and jeb could come and go at will.
i don't lke it when the house just becomes this generic backdrop from all of this and not a specific person/family's house. :P

p.s. why are there so many spoilers on this topic?the subject is really just where did a specific character live.

Current Talk '06 I / where the heck does quentin live?
« on: February 11, 2006, 07:03:32 PM »
i have been watching the 1970 leviathan episodes.

quentin's presence here continues to baffle me.there is just some very sloppy storytelling going on.

i realize that the character had become trememdously popular so they needed to work him into the storyline post-1897 but i don't think they gave him a compelling raison d' etre.when barnabas first arrived as a "lost cousin" they wrote him a plausable story about who he was and where he'd been and elizabeth offered him the old house as a place to live.

with quentin here they didn't really bother with any of that.they just plunked him down in the middle of this plot and had everyone accept him no questions asked.this doesn't make alot of sense.

so on to my question.unless i blinked and missed it i can't tell where this character is supposed to live.he strolls in and out of collinwood like he owns the place.he seems similarly at home at the old house.but i don't recall liz graciously offering him a room at collinwood.i haven't seen a bedroom set for the character yet.perhaps this gets resolved in a future episode but where the heck does quentin collins live? ???

a couple of years ago(before i was a member of this board)i attended a party at the upstate n.y. home of artist rob pruitt(the house itself something straight out of d.s.)where they were supposed to air a documentary about the show.there were several fans there(besides alot of hipsters drinking beer)but unfortunately the person who supposedly had a tape of this documentary never showed up.

i don't know if this was a copy of the documentary under discussion here.

but please,we are all going on the same gossip.yes,a certain actress had an affair with a certain married, rich and soon-to-be-accused-of-his-wife's-attempted-murder man.yes,a ceratin actor left the show during a period of alcoholism.yes, another actors' death frequently gets called into question.

but what's with all the scandal and secrecy?where is all the drama here really coming from? ::)

my favorite vicki was vicki during the first laura collins story.she had a very appealing "nancy drew-ish-ness".sort of "victoria winters, girl mystery solver".it was the character at her best.

but something changed in the writing after the barnabas introduction.while vicki was able to recognize a threat in laura and act on it the storyline dictated that vicki become "fond" of barnabas.so while bells and whistles should have been going off to alarm her of the potential threat barnabas posed she just couldn't see it.she saw him as a gentleman and even had burke call off his investigation of barnabas.i suppose this was supposed to make her seem sweet and trusting and also put her in further jeopordy which heightened the dramatic potential but it also resulted in her coming across as rather dim.

and by 1795 the deal was done. :(

where shall we start?

for the first several episodes maggie wears that short blond wig.then for some time she wears her own shoulder length dark red hair.when barnabas is holding her captive she wears an elaborate period wig to better resemble josette.when she's at wyndcliff she wears a fall that hangs loose to her waist and she continues to wear some version of this throughout the 1967 episodes.for awhile in 1968 maggie wears a full on wig.the red flip with bangs she wears during the plot when she becomes trapped in the mausaleum.when she becomes governess at collinwood she again wears her own hair for awhile.when the storyline returns to the present after 1897 again we have maggie in a number of falls.in one episode i just watched from 1970 she wears a very vicki-like style with the front pulled back and a fall hanging down her back.

and all this without even mentioning the period wigs kls wore during the time travel storylines. :P

it came up here some time ago that kathryn leigh scott actually sewed alot of her own cloths.some of them do have that "butterick pattern #17" feel.

she also wore more hairpieces than any other actress on the show and that's saying alot.

i caught a good one last night.

when liz and carolyn are taking sactuary at the rumson house on little winiward island jeb phones liz with some instructions.he's supposed to tell liz to pretend that she's on the phone with mrs.johnson but instead tells her something like "under no circumstances are you to tell anyone mrs.johson called".liz however follows up with the intended dialouge and proceeds to pretend that it's mrs.johnson on the other end of the line. ::)

angelique does have her considerable charms however...

i just love early,apple-cheeked,good girl from the wrong side of the tracks maggie.the ponytail, the miniskirts, she's the sweetest.

i'm not quite as fond of maggie once she becomes governess at collinwood.i just liked vicki better in that role but that's just me. :P
