Current Talk '06 I / Re: Old Soaps
« on: March 30, 2006, 01:31:17 AM »
i started watching soaps at age eight(my parents should have known right then and there i was part of the lavender set). ::)

my first love was "all my children".i'm remembering a willowy and fragile nina cortland,a young and spunky brooke english,a spoiled and snotty erica kane and of course pine valley's grand dame pheobe wallingford who was married to a character played by our own louis edmonds(langly i believe).

i can still hear the theme to "edge of night".it wasn't overtly supernatural but there was something dark about the show.i wish i got 'soap net' but i don't.

this is such shocking news.

so many members of our d.s. family are no longer with us it's just too sad.

i hope there will be a fitting tribute at the fest.it's a shame he won't see the 40th anniversary of his creation. :(

Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '06 / Re: On and Off -- Episodes 123 & 124
« on: March 26, 2006, 04:32:49 PM »
i was mesmerized by diana millay the minute she walked into that diner.loved the hat and gloves.i just thought her delivery was very interesting.as you said luciaphil, melencolic as well as sort of tired and weary.it's almost as if she knows the battle she is about to undertake will take everything she's got.

i sort of liked maggie's scenes with laura.she knew she was in a nowhere town and laura's tales of far-off places must have seemed exotic.they do seem to be struggling with who this character is here however.is she the nosy town gossip or the good girl from the wrong side of the tracks?i think her most effective scenes early on are with david ford.

and you have to cut maggie some slack for her aggressive pursuit of joe haskell(even though it is wildly inappropriate here when vicki's in such danger).snagging the town's hunkiest fisherman from the clutches of it's most spoiled brat must have been an irresistable proposition.

i'm almost through with the full run of the show and i really want to back and re-watch the laura storyline.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: Roger Davis: Most and Least favorite
« on: March 26, 2006, 04:04:38 PM »
for some reason roger davis didn't bother me as peter bradford in 1795.his over-the-top acting style worked with the pitch of the witchcraft trial storyline.

but as jeff clark forget it.we're supposed to attatch all of this romance to the fact that peter traveled foreward in time to find vicki but when he shows up he's a bossy, annoying jerk.for the most part all they do is bicker.i don't think we ever once see them pleasently enjoying each other's company.it's just too overwrought.

as ned stuart he is something of a non-entity for me.he irritated me during his scenes as ned but the character was on the show too briefly to have had a lasting impact.

the 1897 characters annoy me as well.dirk's glued-on mustache was cheesy.his chemistry with diana millay wasn't there.then his antics as a vampire were too campy.charles delaware tate did't bother me as much but that part of the storyline simply wasn't a favorite of mine.

in general i just found his acting style to be too beligerent. :P

i agree it was an awsome episode.when the four 1897 collins siblings are together it's a real blast.

another episode featured in yesterday's slide show #191 when the fishing shack goes up in flames is another personal favorite.it was one of those episodes that gave me goosebumps.i read somewhere that that was one of the hardest scenes ever on the show to film.something about it requiring a three camera set-up or something to that affect.

as much as i enjoyed the 1966 episodes i'm ultimately glad that the show made the jump.

that's why 1967 is my favorite time period.i felt plenty stimulated by those episodes.

i just feel that after a certain point the writers aimed certain storylines specifically at the pre-teen audience.
i don't mean that as a total criticism because i as an adult enjoyed alot of this material but i do think the show could have stayed a bit more grounded and utilized the original cast more and focus less on what amounted to temporary, disposable characters.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: Which actors will be attending the 06 fest
« on: March 19, 2006, 08:15:20 PM »
from the shadowgram update it sounds like the same actors as ususal are coming(not that i'm not always delighted to see them).doesn't it always seem like the "surprise" guest turns out to be terry crawford?

the only genuine "surprise" guests would be jonathan, mitch, alexandra, kate and david henesy and we know how likely that is. :P

i agree that it would have been great to have some traditional soap opera storytelling with the return of paul stoddard.it was a wasted opportunity in terms of character driven plotting.

but i suspect that the writers believed(rightly or wrongly)that after all that had preceeded it they couldn't return to more "normal" soap opera storytelling because it might turn off those "kids that ran home from school".they needed to constantly sate the pre-teen attention span.

i loved the jason mcquire blackmail plot but it's unlikely that it would have rivited many twelve year olds.

in some ways they created a monster.the youth audience brought the show it's greatest success but they became captive of it and could never again gear a storyline strictly at an adult audience.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: 1969 and 1970: the "Best" Years of DS?
« on: March 18, 2006, 05:41:08 PM »
i'm so with barnabas' bride here.

for me 1967 is the year.

it started with laura collins(which technically began in 66)and ended with 1795(which technically ended in 68)and if that was the only part of the show i saw i'd find that satisfying.

i was mesmerised by the 1967 episodes.i watched as if under a spell.after the storyline returned to the present from 1795 the spell was broken and the show became wildly uneven for me.i enjoyed some storylines and disliked others but i never loved the show again in quite the same way.i just loved the pacing here.it was the perfect blend of the supernatural and "normal" soap opera storytelling.it involved the original characters in a very compelling way.for me it was the show at it's freshest and most organic.later it becomes too contrived, gimmicky and plot-driven.

when i think about what the show means to my heart i think about those episodes and those characters.

i also agree with those here who found the whole werewolf/leviathan connection to be tacked-on,silly and meaningless.

suffice to say that the peter bradford development was the worst plot twist in the show's entire history.

i'm quite surprised at laura collins poor showing thus far.

i think that out of many of the characters listed here laura could have had some real potential.

diana millay is the absolute worst(and i mean that in the best possible way)! >:D

i certainly wouldn't go so far as to say that i thought leviathan was the best storyline but i did, having just completed it,enjoy it more than i thought i would.

like most here i prefered the early part of it.i thought it was creepy and atmospheric and unique.the antique shop set joined my list of favorites.i thought it was really well done.

it certaily had it's flaws as well.

clocking in at just about three months i thought it lasted just the right amount of time.longer and i can see it becoming quite wearisome.

vampire victoria!!!

that's alot to take in.

my parallel time vicki wouldn't necessarily have to have been a supernatural character.i'm picturing the polar opposite of 'real time' vicki.

vain,pleasure seeking,sarcastic and cruel.that would be a vicki i'd love to see.

a cool new p/t wardrobe wouldn't hurt either.psychedelic,lots of jewelry,maybe some fur.anything besides that god-forsaken dress. :P

thanks guys.

i thought of it while smashed onto a rush-hour subway car.imagining various d.s. scenarios is often a way i spend tedious times like that. :P
