i wonder if perhaps in intoducing roxanne the writers were simply trying to take the show in a new direction.

after all there are only so many characters played by kathryn leigh scott that barnabas could fall in love with.i think that after kitty hampshire that part of the storyline was played out.his "fondness" for maggie post-1897 was weak at best.it just never really went anywhere.

it's true that quentin was more the "skirt chaser" in the classic sense.perhaps that was the wrong choice of phrase for barnabas but you know how it is when one just fires off at the keyboard.
the onscreen chemistry between quentin and beth was very compelling.i was stunned when quentin randomly picked amanda harris and deeply saddened by beth's unfortunate fate.

In a way I wish they hadn't gone as overboard as the did with the whole
Liz cursed by Cassandra - buried alive thing
I think it would have been far more fun to see Liz square off against Cassandralique more often.

i totally agree.

in general the writing for elizabeth was horrible in 1968.i loathed every minute of the tedious "buried alive" plot and as has been pointed out it went on ad nauseum.sometimes i'd forget that liz was still on the show and then she'd walk into a room and it was the same old same old. ::)

it was a total waste of joan bennett's time and talent.imho she might as well have taken the entire year off.she gets a few moments during quentin's haunting but it isn't really until she portrays judith in 1897 that she's again given some material worthy of her.

that's funny about laura.

she did look quite pretty here but really wierd in 1897.the make-up was cakey and she had perhaps the worst hairpiece ever on the show.

hard, dusty, ash blond curls in back and two thick plaited braids that ran across the front.it wasn't even integrated into her own hair but just sort of stuck on top of her head.it was really more like a hat.

thanks for another great read.

i think vhs volume #15 is a great way to introduce new viewers to the show.it features the episode petofi mentioned when barnabas was planning to kill burke and willie talks him out of it.he has some great scenes with dr.hoffman here and the ghost of sarah collins is making her presence known and vicki and burke announce thier engagement and that sets off a whole chain of events.

the episode that keeps getting mentioned where barnabas tells vicki and carolyn the story of josette is awsome as well.even though the character was still essentially "evil" here it's the first time we see the conflicted nature that ultimately will define him.

i wouldn't recomend any of the time travel episodes to a first time viewer.as good as they may be it might be confusing.

as i near the completion of the series i must say that barnabas collins is something of a randy and often fickle fellow.

now of course we all know that josette collins was his "one great love".this was one for the ages.

josette was played by kathryn leigh scott.so when the show travels back and forth in time and the various storylines unfold one of two things happen between barnabas and whatever character kls was playing at that particular time:

a.)barnabas pursues the character with an obsessive, manic, often violent fervor(1967 maggie evans,1897 kitty hampshire).
b.)barnabas persues the character in a sort of weak, half assed way because she reminds him of josette but it never really goes anywhere(1897 rachel drummond,1970 maggie,1970pt maggie).

so supposedly josette's the one.but i'm currently watching 1970pt and the minute roxanne appears on the slab with a red shag and a bullet bra he's smitten.ignoring all rationality in the situation and the advice of his good friend dr.julia hoffman he decides that simply based on her beauty this creature must be brought to life.

let's not forget either that for a long time victoria was the apple of his eye.and at some point in 1840 he tells angelique that she was always the "one he loved".

all the while the good doctor's obvious affections go all but ignored.

this was one fickle vampire. :P

i didn't pay as much attention as i should have during barnabas' trip back to the year 1796(because i thought it was pointless)to save vicki but this has me stumped.

in 1968 didn't vampirelique's "master" send her back to hell?i don't remember her simply being sent back to 1796.why would he bother to do that?

was this just another continuity gaffe the writers thought they could get away with or was angelique's resumed presence in 1796 explained?

that is odd that they're refering to the first episodes as 'volume 27'.i've always thought the way these episodes were marketed was odd.

i do have most of the "collector's series" on vhs(a few volumes lost to the sands of time)but i just know i'll shell out the $$$ for the dvd's.i haven't watched the pre-barnabas storyline in it's entirety in years so i'm hoping it will seem fresh to me again.

i don't however intend to shell out a dime for a "bloopers" dvd.just not interested.

elizabeth(to herself):"oh dear god if this girl doesn't shut up about that stupid foundling home i swear i'll throw her off widows' hill myself!"

2680
oh my...

hearing alexandra recite her episode one voiceover.i think i might weep! ::)

mitch ryan was another key player in episodes one and two and he never attends the fests either.all of this lends itself to some serious speculation.

it will be fun if kls reprises her "sassy waitress" bit or if nancy barrett gyrates as she did at the blue whale in epiosdes two.i'll bet she's still got in in her.

i'll add one more thing to the topic.

i'm watching the 1970pt storyline right now and i have to say that for the first time on the show joan seemed to be slightly off her game consistently here.

after turning in amazing work as judith during 1897 and liz during the leviathan storyline here joan seems unsure of herself and without direction.perhaps it was the strain of filming the movie simultaneously or just that her character was peripheral and without alot of purpose but she did seem slightly adrift.

i just never really get a sense of who this character is.

i think a storyline covering the early teenage years of carolyn, maggie and vicki would be great.the backstories are probably fascinating.

roger and laura were living in augusta,me. for many years and roger and david only returned to collinsport shortly before the time that the show first began.so for many, many years carolyn, her mother and matthew morgan were the only people living at collinwood.she must have had a very sheltered and lonely childhood living with this reclusive woman who never left the house.

maggie's upbringing was probably difficult as well.it would be interesting to see the story pick up when her mother was still alive and the impact her death had on her father.perhaps the time of the car crash would be a good place for the storyline to start.

and it would be interesting as well to see a parallel storyline showing us vicki's formulative years at the foundling home in new york.was there some sort of forshadowing even then about her future at collinwood?

since these three characters are close in age it would make the most sense to intertwine their stories.

Current Talk '06 I / wigs and falls
« on: April 08, 2006, 06:30:22 PM »
the show's costuming always has me on the edge of me seat.

i'm currently watching the 1970pt episodes.while the show could always get a bit heavy-handed with the hairpieces the hairdressing for kathryn leigh scott and lara parker was taken to breathtaking heights across the 1970 episodes.

we get curls.we get braids.we get towering updos.combined with the panty-grazing hemlines of the period an odd top-heavy silhouette is the effect.

needless to say joan bennett, grayson hall, alexandra motlke, lisa richards and clarice blackburn were no stangers to the piece but it was usually something static.something that defined the character's "look".here the hairdessers just seem to be having a party on the heads of maggie and angelique.

interestingly with the exception of the period wigs worn during some of the time travel stuff nancy barrett seems to have been spared from overly aggressive hairpiece use.carolyn always wears her own long, loose blond hair.

forget ohrbach's.the show's wig supplier deserves a credit. :P
