last time i checked in on these episodes mpi was slashing prices on the vhs "collector's series".now they are going to make these very same episodes difficult to purchase on dvd?

that is way stupid and annoying.

as one of the many here who has already handed hundreds if not thousands of dollars to mpi for the rest of the vhs and dvd range i certainly feel i belong to a "club" as much as anyone.

no other series in mpi's catalogue can even approach the volume of episodes produced by d.s.(1200+!).most of us have purchased all of that.in some cases twice.i can't believe mpi dosen't consider that customer "loyalty".
and who besides the most devoted fans are going to even care about purchasing the dusty first year of an old soap opera?

incidently at no time during my countless phone calls to mpi over the years did anyone even mention the dvd club to me or that there was perhaps some benifits to joining. >:(

i could be remembering this totally wrong however...spoilers...
i believe that it was barnabas who first requested that "adam" have jeff clark's face because vicki was in love with jeff and barnabas thought that if his "life force" occupied this creature that resembled jeff vicki would in affect be in love with him.classic d.s. logic. ::)

somehow this plan changed.i think b. was suffering from some sort of guilt complex about the whole thing and persueded dr.lang to change his plans...hence robert rodan.

since the body was already "under construction" during all this i don't know how they ever would have explained the difference in size between the massive rodan adam and the slighter jeff clark but they never needed to as things worked out so differently.

b.t.w. i never understood why adam needed to be pieced together from numerous dead bodies while eve showed up neatly in one gorgeous piece.
there was alot of depth to this characterization.i felt i knew something about her even though she only appeared in a few episodes.she's biting and sarcastic and also very, very sad all at the same time and it works.

contrast this to her early work as carolyn.she seemed like a teenager in the 1966 episodes and here she had a world-weary quality that made her seem like she was in her thirties(and worlds away from "drunk carolyn" of the buzz storyline).

i'll also amend my original post.after reading some of what has been said here i was reminded that in fact roger did have a few stand out episodes.i think perhaps the writing was uneven more than anything else.

i just completed the 1970pt storyline and last night i rewatched some of carolyn's episodes.

i have to say nancy barrett was amazing here.the character didn't appear in alot of episodes but she really made the most of what she got and created i think one of her most memorable characters.she has a few genius scenes.especially after she falls prey to alcoholism.i really wanted to see more of this character.

it must have been great for nancy to play something so different than the spoiled and petulant "real time" carolyn stoddard.she seemed to be having fun playing charity/pansy faye during the 1897 storyline but that character was kind of silly.here she brought great pathos to the role.

by contrast i thought pt elizabeth and roger were very poorly written and directed characters.they introduced them as "poor relations" but never really followed through with that.true the actors were away filming the movie much of the time and weren't that central to the plot but half the time they acted like rt liz and roger and the other half it was hard to tell who these characters were supposed to be.joan bennett especially i thought seemed tired and off her game here.

but nancy barrett was genius.

hi midnite!

i just this week watched the 1970pt to 1995 switch.

seeing collinwood in ruins was one of those goosebump moments for me.the set,the music,i thought it was really well done.

barnabas:"i told willie to polish this banister with PLEDGE not dry dust.he'll get the cane for this one!"

since every episode ended with some sort of "cliffhanger" i wonder how they decided what was friday-cliffhanger-worthy and what was just regular-weekday-cliffhanger material?sometimes they even had "mini-cliffhangers" within the episode itself right before they went to commercial.

they must have saved the big guns for friday.the time period switches wre probably friday stuff.

being a contemporary viewer i guess some of that suspence isn't really there as it was for those who watched during the original run.i sort of knew going in what actors were with the show for what length of time so when that actor's character "dies" or otherwise departs i knew whether or not that was really it for them.

so true!

no one worked a telephone or a pair of gloves quite like the good doctor.

it's funny how they dabbled in a potential "friendship" between julia and cassandra during the early part of this storyline.we all know how that turned out.

and cassandra's endless array of lime green ensembles was really creamy. :P

Imagine Richard dawson hosting the Collins Family Feud??!!!  Worse, a DS version of Match Game, with Grayson Hall in the Bret Somers chair!

oh a d.s. version of "match game"?that is too genius!

the cast was made for "match game".everyone smoking and drinking while on set!
frid would make the debonair host.louis would be the charles nelson riley type.all bons mots and double entendres.karlen would be the lewd wise-cracker.he'd jokeingly bicker alot with mitch ryan.selby would be the matinee idol.parker would engage in flirtatious barbs with our host but almost always guess the correct answer.alexandra would be the cute ditz who always got in wrong.joan would so be that "legendary hollywood guest star".grayson totally belongs in the bret somers chair...sarcasm,smoke rings and raspy voiced.

all that booze!all those smokes!this show would be too much! ::)

one more thought.

on viewing the further progression of this storyline i cannot believe how inconsistent and out-of-the-blue the romance between barnabas and roxanne was.i totally do not buy it.

when barnabas cried out to roxanne through the flames of the parallel-time room i thought i was going to barf. [puke]

oh my!

now i know i'm not ready to watch this storyline.

at the very least of it if the angelique from 1795 was still alive in 1840 wouldn't she be quite old?or do witches not age like the rest of us?

these scenes were a hoot.

was the invitation for dinner or just cocktails?i forget.i loved that nicholas walked into this ridiculous little charade fully aware of what was really going on but playing along.

i agree that the scene where angelique confronts barnabas was really well done.i'm remembering a room filled with mirrors and lit very blue.the dialogue here was excellent between frid and parker.i loved how formally everyone spoke here.

funny,i really disliked this part of the show while i was actively watching but now i look back on it with some fondness.right around here there is also a genius scene between nicholas and julia at his house.very cat and mouse.it concludes if i recall with nick telling julia he admired her.

b.t.w. gothick i recently watched a documentary on pbs about julia child and i believe "the french chef" premiered in 1966.a great year all around for television. ;)

after what that floating b*tch laura collins did to me i needed it!

i haven't watched the 1840 storyline yet but i can say this...i don't intend to.not now at least.

i'm currently watching 1970pt.having watched the show from episode one over a period of about four years i'm actually feeling a little burned out at this point.i intend to watch the rest of the 1970rt episodes but after the lengthy trip back to 1897 i really can't handle another time-travel storyline for awhile.especially one that doesn't end with some connection to real time events at collinwood.

recent talk of the 1966 laura collins story makes me want to go back and re-watch that so when i'm done i think i'll try that.

this isn't to say that at some point in the future i might not get a yen for fresh episodes and purchase the 1840 dvd's.
