buzz was major and carolyn in this episode was beyond belief!

she ran the gamut...she got drunk.she necked with buzz(before a disapproving vicki and joe).she rocked out to a transister radio in the drawing room before tormenting poor liz(who then had a devil of a time with door at the top of the stairs).

b.t.w. vicki's date at the blue whale here was supposed to be burke not joe.joel crothers got burke's lines when mitch ryan never showed up and mitch was never seen on d.s. again.

today's other episode #513 begins one of my all time least favorite plots...the unbelievably tedious "liz fears death" storyline. >:(

i finally got the mailing today.i can't wait.i do think i'll skip the day trip and i can't handle the "banquet with the stars" either.

there are a few appealing new merchandising options and a few lame-o ones as well.the "dark shadows the first year" book looks cool because i love those episodes.the "limited edition" coin purse however i think i can nicely live without.who comes up with some of this stuff? ::)

seeing today's slideshow reminded me of how vastly different barnabas' approach to maggie was to his approach to vicki.

with maggie he was barbaric.with vicki he was courtly, almost gentle.i haven't seen these episodes in ages but i do remember getting chills when barnabas first handed vicki that music box.the storyline here is just about to shift to my favorite period on the show.

the daily nature of the show makes it very hard to go back and re-watch favorite storylines because it ends up being such a huge investment of time.

i beg to differ buzz.

the pen in fact has it's own wing at the smithsonian institute in washington d.c..

a fitting tribute to it's monumentality. ;)

how's this for a coincidence???

yesterday a piece of mail came into my office simply adressed to the department.a co-worker opend it and it was a book.i asked him what it was and it turned out to be none other than "dressing the man you love" by betsy durkin matthes!needless to say i had a minor d.s. freak out(something my co-workers indulge with roled-eyes).

better yet it was an autographed copy intended for my boss.apparently they met and spent some time together on shelter island where she has a home and she sent him a copy of the book.he wasn't around so i couldn't ask him about it. :P

i agree...
that the first barnabas/carolyn bite was the most shocking in it's implications.she was his own "flesh and blood" and it made for a huge change in carolyn's personality.carolyn's scenes with julia during this period are among my all-time favorites.
i agree that barnabas is a much more "well developed" character than most of the female characters.

after a certain point he's sort of the only character that really gets any development.the others remain pretty one-note.they sort of have this established persona that can then function as a "blank slate" according to the plot at the time.even as julia gravitates from secondary character into the lead we still know almost nothing about her.she's in love with barnabas and will do almost anything to help him.it doesn't really go much further than that.

i guess that quentin was a very well developed character in 1897.after that not so much.angelique and carolyn also change over time to some extent.

so in prefering the female characters i think i just find them all very visually arresting.it was a very striking group of actresses on the show that really appeal to my eye.

another topic got me thinking.

barnabas inarguably became the show's trademark character.the juggernaut behind how this whole thing has been packaged and marketed since his introduction to the world in 1967.

he's the focus character.but not necessarily the focus for everyone who watches the show.as was discussed on another topic some here like the show equally when barnabas isn't a vampire,or when the character disappears for periods of time,or even when he's not around at all.the other characters are of equal importance.

quentin eventually joins barnabas in "icon status" and the whole show revolves around them in some way.
now i like barnabas and he becomes the glue that holds this whole unweildy thing together but he's not the be-all-and-end-all for me.the same thing goes for quentin.

in fact i think i always watch the show with the female characters as my focus.i'm not sure why but i find them more compelling.am i in the minority totally here?

not that i can't appreciate the considerable charms of joe haskell or chris jennings or willie loomis but...

...vicki,elizabeth,carolyn,maggie,mrs.johnson,julia,laura,angelique.those are the girls that really pique my attention.when they're onscreen i'm usually riveted.even relatively minor characters like buffie harrington and hannah stokes hold my attention(those wild orhbach's rags don't hurt either).

i remember when i was watching the 1897 storyline and when jenny and laura were gone and joan bennett and kathryn leigh scott went on their extended vacations for awhile the story focused primarily on barnabas, quentin, aristede and petofi.i think in a few episodes only male characters appeared.this got really boring for me.

as soon as joan or alexandra or nancy or clarice walk into a scene i get the warm and fuzzies. ::)

does anyone else have any preference for the male or female characters?or are all of them of equal importance?

i consider myself fortunate in that i knew from the get-go that the show ran for nearly a year before the barnabas character was introduced.

therefore i made the decision to start watching sequentially from episode one.these episodes were available on vhs under the "collectors series" title.they have since been discontinued(until the dvd release)but perhaps there is still some inventory.i consider these episodes a must.

as has been said once barnabas comes along it becomes a different show and the original characters essentially become his supporting cast.the first year is critical in understanding who all of these other people are because later on they really don't get much character development.i enjoyed this part of the show as much as anything else that came along later.

make no mistake...it's a soap opera.gothic to be sure but not overtly supernatural until the laura collins storyline begins in late 1966.that storyline alone makes this period unmissable.

i know that the sci-fi channel aired the pre-barnabas episodes at least once because the first episodes i ever saw were when david lured vicki to the closed-off section of collinwood and locked her in.this was during the inimitable fountain pen plot which is so pre-barn. :P

it's true that daniel got short shrift during this storyline.

he hardly had any interaction with his mother at all.on angelique's part daniel didn't seem very high on her list of priorities either.she was focused almost entirely on quentin.this is in marked contrast to the obsessive focus of david's relationship with his mother laura during the 1966 and 1897 storylines.

like most of the main cast david henesey was filming the movie during much of parallel time but it would have been nice to see more development between daniel and his mother.

in general david's characters would get pushed to the back burner when in fact it would have been more interesting to have him in the thick of things.this certainly happened when his father was married to cassandra.they share a few scenes but essentially their relationship is not explored.during this same period david and vicki share very few scenes which is sad because they had a cool relationship(he is the reason she's at collinwood in the first place) and then alexandra leaves so there is really no closure for them.

another intersting thing about parallel time(apart from it being a parallel time)is that in alot of ways it seems more "normal" than real time collinwood.

apart from angelique(and barnabas when he shows up)the family doesn't seem to have been plagued by centuries of supernatural shenanigans.no vampires chained in coffins, pheonixs' on the 100 year cycle or werewolves on the prowl.since angelique had only married into the family perhaps a dozen or so years earlier(judging from daniel's age)was the collins family in this time band essentially free of curses?

the familie's finanaces seem to have been in better order here too.where as real time collinwood is rather frowsy and threadbare here it is,i believe i'm quoting someone here,"bright and flowery and well ordered".there is apparently a full staff.besides hoffman and stokes there is talk of unseen chambermaids, gardeners and cooks.interestingly this was the only time period on the show that didn't have a governess of some sort.i do wish they had explained why elizabeth and roger had been the "poor relations".those characters needed a better backstory.

i thought that the chris and amy collins characters were totally unnessesary.i wonder if they were just finishing out don briscoe and denise nickerson's contracts?

i re-watched a few episodes and i was reminded of how forced and contrived the whole barnabas and roxanne thing was.i didn't buy it for a second.i think the writer knew that the barnabas/josette thing was played out and hoped viewers would go for this.

voiceover:"collinwood in the bizarre and frightening world of 1968 parallel-time...in this world all who live at the great house will make sartorial choices in exact oppostion of those in out own timeband."

with nods to mb. ;)

much like leviathan 1970pt was a late storyline i was fully prepared to dislike but ended up getting a kick out of anyways.

while i didn't "care" about the characters in the same way i do about their real time counterparts the fact that they were played by familiar faces gave me enough to hold my attention(at least after the filming of the movie was complete and the main cast returned to the storyline).

the whole cyrus/yeager thing was a snooze for me.liz, roger and carolyn went underused(again, the movie)and quentin and maggie were as annoying as hell.

but i did think that lara parker was given a great opportunity here.her scenes with grayson hall both as hoffman and rt.julia crackled.i also liked her scenes with kls.her few scenes with louis edmonds brought roger and cassandra to mind.those two had interesting chemistry.i also enjoyed the buffie harrington and hannah stokes characters alot too.when nancy barrett returned to the storyline her final episodes were amazing.
as much as i didn't care for sabrina stuart in general i found her fate to be sad and unfair.she's really one of the show's ultimate victims
flawed to be sure...i really did want more of the main cast...but i enjoyed it in the end.
