Current Talk '06 II / Re: Why dont people like Adam?
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:32:18 PM »
like barnabas' bride it's not so much the character of adam per se i dislike as much as what his appearance represents on the show.

before adam the show was written with a more adult sensibility.you're dealing with supernatural characters(a pheonix,a vampire,a witch)but in general it was plotted like a traditional "soap opera".i liked that.
with adam the tone and focus of the show changes violently.for me it becomes almost cartoonish during this storyline with monsters coming out of the woodwork and the original, human characters relegated to the sidelines.plus the darn thing just goes on forever.

eventually i got used to this new pacing on the show but i remember finding the first adam episodes to be almost physically jarring.

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Vicki's Ideal Guy

Who do you think would have made Vicki the happiest out of her prospective boyfriends?  I'm going with Burke Devlin for this one.  I've been watching the summer of 1967, and they're just so great together.  I get all tingly when the "Missy" music plays and they're out on the terrace.  So romantic.

i totally agree andre,

i love the 1967 episodes.vicki was at her absolute most radiant on that terrace.i love the scenes where vicki and burke describe their childhoods.these two were meant to be togther.i spotted it from episode one.with burke you get the sense that vicki was protected.with peter/jeff/whoever she was toast!

like you said very romantic but not without an element of suspence because you-know-who was generally lurking in the shadows during these scenes. >:D

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 II / Re: Had Fun at the Fest
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:00:11 PM »
sorry we didn't get to meet penny,

i did get to meet midnite and several other members.i should thank profstokes and buzzh for introducing me around.

the fest was fun.as always a bit overwhelming with twelve hour days packed with activity.i had to pick and choose.the "Q&As" were as goofy as always.the reading of episode one was a highlight.i hate to be nit-picky but lara parker got victoria's voiceover totally wrong(yes i know it by heart).i wasn't her fault she was just reading from the script but whover typed it up made changes.also i didn't think karlen's burke devlin was a slam-dunk either.he sort of underplayed it.the best part of this performance was kathryn leigh scott reprising her role as maggie the "sassy waitress"(j.e.r.k.!).that was fun.

jonathan frid's surprise phone call was cool too.

i've got some reading to do now.i picked up lara parker's new book and r.j.jamison's(both autographed)as well as the first audiodrama which i can't wait to listen to.my budget didn't allow me to purchase any vintage stuff this year.

all in all a fun weekend. :P

a lovely tribute mysterious,

i tend to become a bit emotionally overwhelmed thinking about the pen but on the occasion of its 40th anniversary it deserves due respect.

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 II / a few things to do in brooklyn
« on: August 24, 2006, 12:40:55 AM »
for those attending the brooklyn fest this weekend there are a few other fun things to do very close to the fest site should one want to get out for a bit.

the brooklyn museum and the brooklyn botanic garden are a scant ten minute subway trip away.
the museum is excellent and has a world class egyptian collection("oh great god rah")and the garden is beautiful and relaxing as well.

both are located just six subway stops away on the 2 train right across the street from the marriott at the borough hall station.get off at the eastern parkway station.

one needn't rely on the hotel restaurant either.just a few blocks away on atlantic avenue there is a great and inexpensive fish and chips place called chip shop.besides fish and chips they serve authentic british dishes(mushy peas, scotch eggs, fried mars bars)and pub beers.

the hotel congierge probably has any additional info needed.

hope to meet many of you there!

p.s. i'm so spoiled this year i can actually walk there from my house.

nancy,

i'm going to have to disagree with you wholeheartedly.

are we reading the same board?

while i guess that i can only speak for myself i doubt that most of us have invested the time to watch a 1200+ episode series for rickety sets and "bloopers".

actually i think that the actors and show are generally discussed with a considerable level of affection and emotional involvement.if anything the actors are spoken of in terms of reverence unusual when soap opera stars are under discussion.

the mainstream media might focus on those things but i think that most fans are looking for something else.

Current Talk '06 II / Re: parts you can't re-watch?
« on: August 21, 2006, 06:15:32 PM »
Interesting topic, for me, I am rather picky as to what I want to rewatch, 1795, isolated episodes in 1968 with Barnabas and Cassandra/Angelique, parts of 1897 (yes, the Barnabas/Angelique stuff...), a FEW Leviathan, and then 1840/1841PT.  You should definitely give the last year a try, if only to see Jonathan play another character, Bramwell, and a lot of the stuff in 1840 is pretty good.....but I can see being burnt out if you have watched the whole thing for four years, I hope you did not buy ALL the DVDs--that is so expensive!!!!

because i started from episode one i started on vhs and continued as such for the next three years.i also didn't own a dvd player until last christmas.since i only received two or three vhs volumes a month it was taking me forever to get through this thing.three years just to get to the end of the vicki episodes.with the start of the quentin hauntings i switched to dvd and things picked up in speed alot.

still i have a massive pile of videos and dvds and as many of us here have have probably spent what amounts to several thousand dollars on this once it's all added up.

as for 1840 i just can't work up any enthusiasm for it right now.they mystery being set up during the summer of 1970 just isn't tempting me to go for it.

true,

they made a very big deal about the fact that everyone vicki encountered in 1795 looked exactly like their present-time counterpart.you'd think that after the third or fourth time vicki is informed that the person standing in front of her was not who she thought they were she might have picked up on something but that's how things go with vic.

then when she returns to the present it goes into reverse and vicki has to register "shock" when she encounters for the first time those she met in 1795(peter/jeff,angelique/cassandra,noah.harry).

the poor girl spent the better part of six months "shocked". :o

elizabeth:"julia since you apparently think you own this place by now here are the keys.i'll be sleeping in the garage."

i hate to say it but the pairing that would have had the most interesting storyline possiblities would have been barnabas and...angelique.

their love/hate push/pull dynamic served as the catalyst for some of the most interesting storytelling on the show.

i think that barnabas and josette(and all of her look-alike incarnations)needed to remain forever the ill-fated lovers.it simply was not their destiny to end up together happily.

i know that there are alot out there who envisioned barnabas and julia together but i think that would have ended up being very boring.as it was i think the cat-and-mouse dynamic they had before 1795 was much more fascinating than co-dependence they shared later on.it just gets too easy.

barnabas and vicki are an interesting thought to ponder.while it's highly doubtful that they ever would have married if alexandra hadn't left the show i wonder if t.p.t.b. would ever have decided that a pairing between the two(however briefly)would have been a possibility or would some sort of burke/jeff type of obstruction always be put in place?

as for roxanne she and barnabas are perhaps the most boring and contrived coupling ever on the show.

elizabeth was a blood relative so that has a distict "yuck factor" to it. :P

2547
i'll play the ditz here but shall i assume that r.j. jamison is julia99?

congratulations!

i'm starting to think i'm going to need to bring a very fat wallet to the fest this year.usually there are very few new offerings i'm interested in but with this book and kls' new book and the audio dramas and so forth it looks like it's going to be good!

I've been on a several months lay off in watching any of the episodes. With fall on the way, I'm looking forward to watching the pre-Barnabas episodes again.  The Laura episodes are extra special when the weather is getting colder.  I just love the whole Frank Garner & Vicki searching for her past while the Phoenix story line is beginning to unfold and Prof Guthrie's arrival. To me, this is pre-Barnabas at its best.  Oh, and not to mention Laura's driving Liz nuts. I don't think I could get tired of this storyline.

I liked the Adam and Eve storyline in the beginning but got really tied of Adam towards the end.  I for one was glad that Adam got sent to the closet never to be seen again!

i totally agree about the laura collins story.

i watched it three winters ago and it's totally curl up on the couch under a blanket stuff.i remember it being cold and snowy outside and just being mezmerized by this strange woman and story.

it's the first storyline i intend to re-watch but i need to wait until there's that nip in the air. ;)

i agree that there are scenes and episodes even during the worst plots that i enjoy and would not want to have missed(just having joan bennett walk into a scene usually elevates it's status).

but in general i don't jump around storywise.when i'm "in" a storyline i'm in it.that's my focus.so by not re-watching a particular part of the show i'm thinking more in terms of not investing the time to sit through the weeks/months worth of episodes of that particular plot in it's entirety.

me feelings about diana millay are that she's crazy...like a fox.

she must feel that it is in her best interest to maintain this aura of strangness.

when i first met her she told me that she remembered nothing, literally nothing, about the show at all and in fact had never even seen it.
in a subsequent encounter she was more forthcoming.she remembered that she had left the show the first time because she was pregnant and that a few years later dan curtis called her and asked her to return for a storyline he was working on which of course turned out to be 1897.

one's dealings with her are very different from someone like kathryn leigh scott.both have things to try and sell but kls is pleasant but very business like.with diana you're getting the whole package.

but i still find her rather likable.
