penny,

you make an excellent point about the way the story is structured.the characters can always hope for a brighter tomorrow but in the end there is only tragedy.they are for the most part a fundamentally decent(if deeply flawed)group of people who fate has cast a black cloud over.

i remember one scene that expressed this mood rather poignantly.during vicki and jeff's ill-fated wedding roger comes to vicki's room to tell her jeff needs to see her on the terrace.sensing something is wrong she goes to him.when roger and liz are left alone liz stoically walks over to the dresser, stops, sighs and pronounces that "nothing ever works out for any of us does it?"

at the time it nearly brought tears to my eyes because it's so true.

i have a question about karma.

lately i've noticed that some brand new members already have thousands of points in their karmic totals.

how is this possible?

i don't believe i've met craig...is he the tall fellow with the reddish hair who sort of "hosts" the fests?

no matter...i wish him and his partner and family all the best in a difficult time.

the potential for "irrelevancy" aside...

all this depends on what kathryn leigh scott's contract looked like. ;)

to quote midnite(sort of)this topic is giving me deja-vu all over again...

...but i'll throw my two cents(again)in anyways(and probably quote myself in the process).

i tried to get into the groove of "magtoria" but in the end i just don't go for it.

i can totally see how the producers thought this to be "win-win" situation at the time.alexandra was gone, her replacement had not been successful, and waiting in the wings was a similarly "ingenue-ish" character not being especially well used at that moment.maggie's "support system" was diminishing.joel crothers and david ford were gone(or about to depart)and the diner set was knocked down.so why not bring her into the fold up at collinwood?

but in the end i think that maggie as governess inherited vicki's worst characteristics(her haplessness and helplessness)and none of her best ones(her sweetness and naivity)and lost alot of her own sass and spunk in the process.

please don't get me wrong...i love kathryn leigh scott as maggie evans.but in terms of collinwood governess i'll always want to see vicki and wish maggie had continued with her own, seperate storyline. :P

holly is so genius in "trash"...the scene with the beer bottle...so tragic!

apparently there were comparisons to the great anna magnani and a write-in campaign to get holly put on the ballot for a best supporting actress nomination.

i also have a fondness for the eyebrow challenged jane forth.

i just finished reading "low life in high heels" the autobiography of andy warhol "superstar" and drag legend holly woodlawn.

it's a tawdry little tale really but there is an amusing passage about how holly spent some her afternoons in the late 1960's.she and other low life "superstars" like jackie curtis would shlep over to a friend's hotel suite in the east village, pile up on the bed,and "shot up heroin and speed, and just hang out until it was time to watch 'dark shadows' ".

the imagery here is really quite funny.especially if you know what these people looked like. :P

i'm in two minds about a new d.s..while i'd welcome it,as retvez pointed out,the 1225 original episodes are more than satisfying.

i don't know much about other "cult" shows(like star trek)but i do know that versions spun-off from the original were populated with new characters.that doesn't appear to be the case as much as with d.s..i can't think of any other show that is so hidebound in which characters simply have to be there!

for instance i remember when the 2004 pilot was in production and there was alot of chatter about who was going to play quentin.now of course on the original series quentin didn't even appear until late in the show's third year and after nearly seven hundred episodes.so his inclusion was not so much that it would make any sense storywise in the first season(and it would take at least that to get barnabas' storyline off the ground)but because he's one of the hidebound characters that fans remember and were expecting.

a similar thing happens with liz when new versions are in discusion.elizabeth was an extremely important "presence" on the original for two key reasons.one being that she was the grand dame of this whole thing who was with the show from it's first episode.the second being that she was portrayed by silver screen legend joan bennett.the sad truth was that after the barnabas character took off and the show became increasingly supernatural liz got very little in terms of character develepment or her own storyline.so her inclusion in any future version would not be so much that they were going to give liz this huge platform but simply because you absolutely cannot tell this story without elizabeth collins stoddard.

as it was introducing victoria, barnabas, julia and angelique(who were all introduced on the original show over a period of several months in gradually unfolding storylines)in a one hour pilot was pushing it but those are the characters fans expect to see so they had to put them all in there right off the bat.

this is of course for "us" the fans more than anybody.the general public doesn't know who these characters are.even people who casually watched the show when it first aired remember very little of it.barnabas collins seems to be the one everyone recalls and of course he became the official "face" of the marketing juggernaught the show produced.

for a new version to succeed it would have to appeal to several million people and hearty bunch that we are we don't number in those volumes so it would be interesting to see how they approached it.

i bought the book at the fest but have yet to crack a page(although i am about half way through r.j. jamison's tome).

but the truth is that i bought it more as a gesture of support for lara parker than for any interest i might actually have in it's "plot".

i guess for me my enjoyment of the show is in the total picture.not just the characters but the actors who played them then...their faces, their voices.the music, the sets, the clothes.for me it just doesn't translate well to any other medium.i love the naive,time-capsule element of it.

i enjoyed the first of the new audiodramas but mostly for the "goosepimplyness" of hearing those voices and that music combined again.to tell you the truth i pretty much forget the plot just a few days later.

i intend to read lara's book and i'll either like it or not but it won't factor into my feelings about the show itself.
in truth the story that lara the author is telling now just isn't as compelling to me as the one lara the actor, portraying an impossibly gorgeous,twenty-year-old witch, told then.the eyes alone more telling than anything written on a page.
for this reason i've never had much interest in fan-fiction either.

besides, with so many new offerings, many involving the same key participants, telling such wildly differing stories,it's impossible for me to square this with "canon" and have it be real.

in terms of comtemporary literary offerings i enjoy the non-fiction biographies best.i liked "the bennett's,an acting family" and am enjoying "a hard act to follow" despite the fact that i'm not otherwise remotely interested in the theater arts.

all this said i'm glad these new works are in production and i hope they are well-liked.just in terms of my own feelings about it the original is where i'm at. :P

I wasn't aware that they were able to get Cobert's music for the project.  That certainly adds to the attractiveness of the recordings in my book.

gothick,

having the cobert themes really did enhance this production.it wouldn't have been "d.s." to me without this.they even included a couple of the early "blue whale" tunes.

midnite,
like you i got goosebumps when maggie and quentin were reunited.i wasn't trying to be negative because i did enjoy this audiodrama.but i just felt that with selby, parker and scott on board they could have come up with something interesting without re-casting the big "B".they did it once before when these three basically carried the 1970 parallel-time storyline when frid was often absent.
these new audiodramas rekindle that old debate about what is official "canon" and what is not.especially with the go-ahead from dan curtis productions.i haven't read lara parker's new book yet but since it is being released simultaneously i wonder if there is some cross over between the two mediums or if they function as self-contained worlds?i thought about asking lara that during the fest but i'm a horrible public speaker so i chickened out.

that said i will be purchasing the second installment of this series.

i'm sorry it was so hard to find.

what's the verdict on the cuisine at the banquet?i haven't heard anything.

once again it was great to meet you midnite! :-*

contains major spoilers stop reading if you don't want to know...
i listened to the first audiodrama last night.once i got over the initial goosepimplyness of hearing the music and those iconic voices i had a few issues with it.

i won't go into it too much plotwise but i will say that mangus trask's fears came true as they did do a re-cast for barnabas.

that is so pointless and unecessary!i know that he is supposed to be the set piece character for this whole thing but if they couldn't get frid they should have omitted him as a character.with quentin and angelique on board they could have come up with an interesting story without him(although some reference was an inevitability).to me this re-cast did a tremendous discredit to the four original actors who participated.why not just say "you guys aren't good enough".i suppose this is just a set-up to this actor playing barnabas in the next three installments of this series.but like i said so unecessary.
speaking of "vicki" and "frank" how's this for a priceless exchange...

on the first night of the fest one of the coordinators was attempting to "reaquaint" the actors.some of whom had not seen each other in nearly forty years.

so he brought conrad fowkes(frank garner)over to see besty durkin(vicki#2)who of course never actually worked together on the show and the two exchanged awkward pleasantries as if they had.

perhaps she got him mixed up with roger davis. ::)

i suppose it's possible that they worked together elsewhere but the tone of the coversation was specific to d.s..

i actually ended up having rather a nice chat with "fake-vicki".she and my boss are neighbors on shelter island so we chatted about that and she signed a picture for me to give to him.perhaps i'll give her episodes a try. ;)

Who wants to start to take up a collection to buy and send a digital video camera to Alexandra Isles so she'd hopefully make a video/possible call for/to next year's Fest?  [b003]

mscbryk, is that you I see waving your hand?

mysterious,

i'm thinking of having a bake-sale...or a garage-sale...or donating an organ. ;)

a lady bought the painting that was originally used as the cover artwork of the first marilyn ross novel.

it's a painting of victoria in front of collinwood.it's very stylized and 1960's and absolutely gorgeous!

i so wanted it!i think she paid about $700.00 for it.
