i'm with those that absolutely love diana millay.

her laura collins is such a menace!both her 1966 and 1897 storylines are amongst the best written i think.the writers seemed to really have a sense of this character and diana brought it to life.

she's a very different type of villianess than angelique.ang is more vulnerable and sexy and reacts more emotionally to things.laura is more cold and calculating.

i found this character to be mesmerizing the minute she first walked into the collinsport diner(in a hat and gloves!).even without the whole supernatural element she was someone i was intrigued by and for a character that was only with the show for a total of about seven months she really made a lasting impression.

I think one of the WORST scenes ever was the scene where Megan Todd, in the Leviathan storyline, was running around in her shop at night getting scared of various animal heads and the clock chiming. Her acting was so over-the-top and awful when she did it at the end of one episode. It was only slightly better in the recap of it during the teaser of the next episode. Probably Marie's worst scene ever.

i must confess i loved this scene. :-X

by this point the storyline was so over-the-top i sort of got into it.

if i'm remembering this correctly in this scene(or one very closed to it)megan(who's so tightly wound at this point she's ready to snap)decides she needed to try and "calm down" by finishing her cup of coffee(served in those brown and orange earthenware mugs i just spotted at the evans cottage during the laura collins story).

i was so like, megan,if you want to try and calm down have a cup of tea...or a glass of wine...or smoke some weed or pop a valium but do not try to calm down by drinking coffee!

since we're on the subject. ;)

i just finished the laura collins storyline.here vicki is generally attired in a blouse, cardigan sweater and skirt(complete with kilt-pin).

the whole sleeveless dress thing doesn't really get cooking until the barnabas(and in particular the color)episodes begin.

but once it starts that's it(i think she has it in at least eight colors).

i heard someplace(i think on the cd version of "my dark shadows memories")that the actor who replaced craig slocum as harry johnson was kathryn leigh scott's neighbor who filled in at the last moment.

although it's probably not what the writers intended(indeed such things weren't discussed in those days)i agree that harry and mrs.johnson had what could be perceived as the classic "gay-son-mom" relationship.something about it read that way to me.the sort of stereotypical product of the absent/dead father and the domineering mother(and mrs.j. could be overbearing to say the least).

it's a cliche' but that's how it read to me.

well put magnus...

my preoccupation with the show's costuming does get over the top. ;)

i don't mist up often with the show but one scene comes to mind that i thought was rather sweet.

during barnabas and julia's brief visit to the year 1995 they encounter an aged and insane carolyn.

carolyn in looking through a photo album and she cannot recognize a picture of herself as a young girl.

barnabas tell her that she was a girl of "courage and spirit" and that she was in fact her.then as he makes his departure...and barnabas rarely does anything without some sort of self-serving motive...he pauses and gives carolyn a small kiss on her forehead.

it's just a nice gesture of affection that we don't often see.

i love the location shots too.

it's funny because they only filmed them a few times so no matter what the character is wearing in the episode itself they are wearing the same few things in the exteriors.

if i recall during the episode where vicki walks along the beach and discovers THE PEN she is wearing her hair in pigtails which she never wore on the show itself.

according to lara parker's trashtastic "the salem branch" barnabas is apparently looked at as a "poor relation" and has been reduced to earning his keep as a dealer of persian rugs. ::)

one of the numerous off-putting things about this tale.

i think on the show itself it's implied early on in the storyline that barnabas has willie sell several pieces of estate jewelry and that's where much of his funds comes from.

besides his monetary needs are actually rather limited if you think about it.surely liz doesn't charge him any sort of rent on the old house.there are no utilities in the house.it's doubtful willie is particularly well compensated for his employment and for much of the time his dietary needs are sated on the cheap.

he is rather nattily attired.perhaps much of his dollars go to collinsport's finer haberdasheries.

i'm shocked that the colleen kelly to carol crist recast for collinsport inn waitress "susie" wasn't included.

both actresses brought such remarkable subtlty and distinction to the role.

after this recast the show was never really the same for me. :P

perhaps the diana walker recast for carolyn was unavoidable.

the scripts had been written and the episode might have even gotten to the rehearsal stage before nancy barrett became temporarily unavailable.

but the recast was nonetheless odd.she was obviously wearing a wig and one of those hard plastic headbands which was something carolyn never wore.

i've speculated before that perhaps ms.walker understudied for all of the "ingenue" characters(with a black wig for vicki, red for maggie, and blond for carolyn).

alas this was her only chance to get onscreen(the main cast missed performances with remarkable infrequency).

one thing i can say about angelique is that she's rather delusional.

whether she and barnabas had a one night stand or a lengthy romance isn't made clear but when she boarded that ship bound for collinsport she knew what time it was.

she was acompanying her "mistress" on her wedding voyage.perhaps she thought she could just bat her eyelashes at barnabas and he would toss josette aside and claim her as his love.

but she had to have known him better that that(with his profound sense of family and position).she must have known from the get-go that witchcraft was probably going to be part of the eqation.

and how satisfying could that have been?

On the topic of catty scenes, another marvelous one is between Magda and Laura in 1897 when Magda was "helping" Laura clean up the cottage and the Phoenix demanded a tarot card reading.  The facial expressions of the two actresses as they play out this little scene are beyond priceless.  And Grayson Hall must have dealt one mean hand of poker, judging by Magda's dexterity with those cards.

gothick,

i know exactly what scene you mean...genius!

since grayson wasn't yet on the show during the first laura collins storyline it's nice that these two divas got to work together during the 1897 story.

another scene that comes to mind during 1897 is one where magda shows up at collinwood with a silver-bullet loaded gun.
it's late at night and judith refuses to let magda in the house.there is some great back and forth until finally, imperiously as only joan bennett can get,she tells the "gypsy woman" to leave.magda dilly-dallies out front for a few seconds until judith steps outside and commands "NOW MAGDA!" and the dejected gypsy sulks off into the night.

brilliant!

between the diner and the collinwood kitchen the characters were frequently seen eating during the first year.

however their diet seemed rather limited.at the diner it was always roast beef sandwiches(please remember mrs. johnson's epic mayonnaise scene),donuts(generally served three on a plate),ice cream sundaes and lots of maggie's infamously bad, stale, burned coffee(for heaven's sake just put on a fresh pot!).

over at collinwood the meal most frequently seen being consumed was breakfast(the kitchen is often refered to as the "breakfast room").the kitchen set was odd.there was a toaster and a coffee percolator but no stove...hence toast and coffee were generally the menu offerings.

i loved that kitchen set and was saddened by it's departure. :'(

before mrs.johnson's arrival(and those lousy "new england boiled dinners")it is hard to picture any of the collins family members at the stove.since they owned a cannery perhaps they subsisted primarily on canned fish.

flashback!!!

this was one of my first posts at the forum.at the time i think i was watching the 1795 storyline and i just wasn't "feeling" angelique(at that time a "new" character to me).

but needless to say ang did grow on me in a big way and she went on to become one of my favorite characters.

time is a funny thing. ;)
