Current Talk '07 I / d.s. dolls?
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:52:13 AM »
this is going to sound like the absolute gayest thing ever but...

yesterday i saw an item in the newspaper about how the company "madame alexander"(a manufacturer of expensive, collectable dolls)is planning to launch a line of dolls in the likenesses of the five main actresses on the primetime soap opera "desperate housewives".

these tiny drama queens will not come cheaply.it's expected that they will retail for about $130.00 each.that takes a pretty devoted fan.aquiring the entire set will set one back nearly $700.00!

now i enjoy desperate housewives and watch it weekly but i certainly cannot imagine wanting to collect these(although the teensy bree replica is darling). ::)

however it made me think...what if it was a finely detailed line-up of our d.s. leading ladies that was going into production(as apposed to plastic "action figures").?

would i find myself insanely covetous of these?willing to shell out big $$$?would twelve inch versions of vicki, carolyn and maggie be lining a curio cabinet in my home?would i become "that person"?

this thought scared the hell out of me!!! :o

would anyone else go for these?

it's funny that barnabas introduced himself as a "cousin from england" and yet he did not speak with an english accent.

not only did jonathan frid and "barnabas" have different speaking voices but barnabas' entire intonation differed depending on what character he was speaking to at the time.

contrast the fawning obsequiousness with which he speaks to "cousin elizabeth" to the sarcastic tone he takes with dr.hoffmann early on...recognizing her as something like an equal yet one whom he still has the upper hand with...to the low command with which he speaks to a true underling like willie.

i always think that barnabas, liz and roger are meant to sound old-money and upper-crusty whether they really did or not.

i'm not sure why they decided that jason mcquire would speak with an irish brogue but it did make him seem more like a "seafaring scoundral".

it seemed like kathryn leigh scott used a slighly higher, more ingenueish, pitch as maggie than her own voice.

and for someone who was supposed to have had the hardscrabble background that vicki did she speaks with an absurdly aristocratic bearing.because alexandra moltke is from denmark i always fancied a vague danish accent coming from her but i learned that she was raised in the u.s. so perhaps i just projected that.

i'm amazed that anybody got this reference. [winkb]

maggie:"i'm sorry willie...i'm not questioning your taste.it's just that i've never found the empire style to be particularly flattering on me.didn't josette have anything in a trapeze line?"

I like this idea & will try to participate.

But I'd REALLY like to see us step up our efforts
to get reruns on SoapNet or TV Land, and to get a new series or new movies on Showtime.

speaking of soapnet...

i only recently realized that soapnet came with my cable package.i rarely ventured that high up on the remote.

i was always under the impression that it aired old soaps(hence the frequent talk of d.s. being aired there)but from what i can tell they rerun that day's episode of a given soap.over the weekend they rerun episodes from the previous week and they have an annoying talk show called "soap chat" or something to the like.

this came as a disappointment.in this era of dvr technology why does a network exist that reruns shows that only aired earlier that day?this doesn't make alot of sense to me.

if this is in fact the situation(perhaps they air old soaps late at night?)why do people think that they would ever air d.s.?

p.s. i may have already asked this question but i forget what the reply was.

i don't think that media promotion is that important for this event because it is so hyper-specific and not reliant on much "casual attendance".

even if it had been heavily promoted it's not like the average new yorker is going to look at their weekend and say "on sunday let's get up,go for brunch, hit the farmer's market and then check out the dark shadows fan convention".

i doubt any of us became aquainted with this event through mainstream media outlets.we are an extremely devoted(dare i say obsessive)fan base who keeps abreast of show related activities via online forums like this one, printed newsletters like the "shadowgram",announcements from mpi,big finish and so on.

so i doubt lack of media promotion effected attendance either way.

i've only been to three fest(2003/06 brooklyn and 04 tarrytown)so i don't have alot to compare it to but i thought it seemed like a well attended event as far as a forty year old soap opera is concerned.it seemed better attended than tarrytown to me.

plus it seemed like there were more new offerings with the books and audiodramas and whatnot than ever.

but it will be a big disappointment if there isn't one next year.as far as frid and moltke go if they didn't attend the fortieth anniversary i doubt they'll ever attend.

i agree that 1970 angelique was one of her best incarnations and certainly her most gorgeous.

before this we either saw her in historical costuming(1795,1897)or her bizarre 1968 ensembles as cassandra collins and her sugar-plum-fairy-from-hell getup as a vampire.

here she looks like a rich trophy wife.very chic.i like the idea of her modeling in new york and getting on with her life rather than just lurking around collinwood waiting to get kicked out.

however there was one thing about the timeline here that didn't make sense to me.when julia first meets mrs.rumson she learns that she has been married six months(and presumably living in new york for some time before this).but six months before this the plot was set in 1897 and angelique was actively there.so how much time was supposed to have passed in these few months?

interesting.

i never noticed that sky and angelique's house was the parallel time room before and i know the sets(room "twenty four" being a personal favorite).i remember thinking at the time that it was a rather elaborate set for only being used a few times.i think it gets tricked-out yet again as sebastian shaw's place.

i never saw the resemblence between the study and quentin's room though.quentin's room seemed bigger to me.i do seem to recall it being used as a bedroom for jason and/or willie during that storyline.the study does reappear a few times after the 1897 storyline.i remember liz reading there during the leviathan story and i think quentin unboxes maggie's portrait there during parallel time.

i haven't seen the 1841 storyline so i don't know what character thayer david plays but he does seem like an odd choice to me.

since jonathan and grayson were essentially the "protagonists" by this point i would have assumed it would have been one of them.

alexandra is the sentimental choice since she recited the first episode voiceover but since she was already long gone it wouldn't have made much sense(indeed viewers who tuned in during the later part of the show's run would not have known who victoria winters was).especially since this was a "parallel time" storyline that bore no direct relationship to the 1966 characters.

so my vote goes to joan, nancy and louis since they were the only actors who stayed with the show from begining to end.joan bennett in particular had that cool patrician tone that would have suited the final voiceover nicely.
