i haven't been posting much lately...my computer has a virus and it's running so slowly it's just not fun. >:(

but i was somewhat surprised to see that i was in the top twenty posters with the "most time online".some of you have been here much longer than me.

when i logged on today i clocked in at 20 days,23 hours and 44 minutes.so i'm about to hit 21 days!

i usually end up watching the show anywhere from two to four hours a week.generally in two-hour blocks(four or five episodes)like watching a movie.

this might be slightly off-topic but i think it's a testament to many of the actors involved that what could be seen as a totally off-the-wall show can actually be emotionally involving.

i recently watched the episode where julia first discovers barnabas in his coffin.the set-up involves julia eavesdropping outside the old house near sunrise as barnabas sends willie off to portland on some errands and prepares to go "downstairs" for the day.he tells willie that he might as well leave now and get back as soon as possible.

i pictured willie in a beat up old truck driving down the backroads of maine before dawn and thought about what a lonely, narrow existance he must have lead during this time.for some reason i found this imagery to be quite moving.

i also thought it was sweet that willie had this secret crush on maggie,a "working class girl",rather than some of the show's more exalted heroines.

it's too bad that after joel crothers left the show they didn't explore this relationship a bit more.i guess the storyline began to yo-yo back and forth in time and become more plot-driven than character-driven so it wasn't really possible.

i'm doing a secondary watch and i'm picking up things i missed during the first go round.

there is a set of earthenware mugs that get quite alot of use.they first appear in the black-and-white episodes but we later see that they are orange with brown stripes running down the side.

i first noticed them during the leviathan storyline when an hysterical megan todd unwisely tries to "calm herself down" over a nice cup of coffee. ::)

they make a very early appearance at the police station where sheriff patterson enjoys a cup of joe and then they go on to spend a signifigant amount of time at the evans cottage.i know they're going to turn up elsewhere.

Polls Archive / Re: Long-suffering character?
« on: February 04, 2007, 06:22:34 PM »
i agree.

i just can't see julia as the show's most long-suffering character.i've been watching the 1967 episodes and it's easy to forget how coldly ambitious her character started out as.she sacraficed the well-being of a young woman in who's care she had been put in charge of to pursue a personal goal.
she softens up over time and they come to rationalize her and barnabas' actions by making them the show's by default anti-heros(see...if we don't create an artificial woman adam will kill vicki!).but julia inserted herself into all of these situations.

did she fall in love with someone who didn't love her back?yes.haven't we all.but considering the types of catastrophes that befell most of the other characters on a constant basis she got off relatively easy.

dr. julia hoffman didn't get anything she didn't sign on the dotted line for.

Current Talk '07 I / Re: Eve's obsession....
« on: February 01, 2007, 01:53:43 AM »
I love Eve. I can't keep a straight face when she's in a scene. I am laughing now just thinking about it. At this stage of the game the show may as well be a comedy (as far as I'm concerned). It's the only way I can get thru it. Personally, I think it's this portion of the show that earned DS it's 'camp' reputation.

i agree.it's here that the show(quite deservedly)begins to become known for high camp. :-X
during this period i alternated between being amused and annoyed but i stopped being emotionally invloved.it was just too silly.

i think there were some episodes that actually had no human characters in them.just monsters!that's kind of hard to take seriously.since the 1968 monsters were essentially disposable characters i didn't really "care" about what happened to them.

that said i was surprised that i did enjoy marie wallace's portrayal of eve.i thought she injected a(much needed)bit of naughtiness and fun to an otherwise dull, dour storyline.

i thought alexandra isles was supposed to be this grand lady.her documentary films reek of noblesse oblige.

when did she ever have a job with a "break room"?

that is so "nine-to-five".i just can't picture her on the frozen-yogurt-diet-snapple-iced-tea-circuit. :P

am i forgetting something?

wasn't danielle as well as eve played by marie wallace?if i'm remembering this correctly except for the clothes eve and danielle looked exactly alike. ???

Carolyn wore slacks sometimes, didn't she?  Especially when she was dating Buzz (and riding his hog).

carolyn's wearing of slacks here was specific to the buzz storyline(the better to ride that "hog" with).she never wore these before or after this.

however there was an episode in 1968 where she inexplicably shows up in a full riding habit complete with crop and jodhpurs!this was kind of funny because there was never any mention of stables being on the estate.she had a scene with tony peterson here so my guess was that this getup was supposed to make her look like a "spoiled rich girl".

there has been some debate over whether or not maggie's quilted maxi-skirt was not in fact extreme bell-bottom pants.i prefer to think of it as a skirt. ;)

towards the end of the show's run they seem to get a bit more lenient in terms of woman wearing pants.megan todd wears them in a few episodes and i think both parallel time carolyn and angelique get a few fetching slacks ensembles.

but in general it was minidresses no matter how frigid it was supposed to be outside.conversely during episodes filmed during the summer everyone still wore heavy wool coats. ::)

since alexandra penned the foreward to "dark shadows memories",attended the 2001 museum of television and radio tribute to dark shadows and is narrating the newly released first year dvds i don't think she's really "snubbed" the fans either.

but something about the live nature of the fests seems to scare her off.i find it extremely distressing that the claus von bulow business is still on people's minds and that is one of the reasons she never comes.it's the fans that are really missing out on that one. :(

last summer i went to a new york screening of "the healing gardens" with alexandra isles in attendance.

i remember distictly that the home video version of this film was available for $29.95.i posted ordering information about it at the time.i'm very surprised to see it being sold on dvd for $295.00.that's pretty outrageous.

here's a "charitable" idea.if ms.isles wants to sell a signifigant number of these dvds she could of course attend next years fest(if there is one),price them fairly, offer to autograph a purchased copy(you know i'd be first in line)and donate the proceeds to her charitable works. ;)

you guys who have this are making me so jealous!
i know i'm going to join the stupid club just to get these episodes.

i haven't seen them in years and no longer have some of the "collector's series" tapes.

what is the commentary from alexandra like?

i was recently surprised to see a copy of "the salem branch" at the brooklyn public library.

perhaps libraries across the country ordered the book.that would certainly have helped sales.

as for the "written word" part as i already voiced i thought this book was dreadfull.

i hear you patti,

i love to see(and hear)laura too.diana millay as laura collins definitely holds a special place in my heart.

her storyline was the first d.s. storyline that i found myself mesmerized by.i had never seen anything like it.in some ways it's d.s. storytelling at it's most original.a vampire is a vampire.a witch is a witch.a werewolf is a werewolf.although the writers and actors certainly put remarkably unique twists on those time-honored tales as far as i know a pheonix who is a woman who comes back to claim her children once every 100 years is a story that has never been told before.

diana is also the cast member that for whatever reason i've had the most personal interaction with.she was chilly and stand-off-ish when i first met her but at this last year's fest she actually remembered me and was very pleasant(in that strange way only she can be if you know what i mean). ;)
