gothick,

you are not alone.i'm quite fond of the red and blue dress as well.in fact when vicki first appears in it perhaps because of it's extremely child-like shape(and the ever present bow)she reminded me of a life-sized "doll".

however my favorite vicki outfit has to be the little mustard colored suit(it's shockingly immodest!)she wears to begin her journey back to the year 1795.pitty abigail had it burned.

one thing that really made me laugh was when vicki disappears and maggie moves into collinwood she unpacks "her" things and what does she pull out of the suitcase but the red and blue dress. ::)

Burke is a chisel-jawed man's man, who's made nervous by any display of imagination over hard-headed, boring pragmatism.    Of course he's the hero.    Considering that everything on TV was a few years behind social reality, Burke was the perfect TV hero for 1967... or maybe 1957.

it's funny how quickly the set-up changed on the show.

here burke is being described as a "hero" when just scant months earlier he served as the show's arch villian.
bedding carolyn, putting the moves on roger's wife, trying to destroy the collins family and in general creating headaches for everyone on collinsport.

suddenly he's the "hero".

it's also interesting that this fundamental change in the character's purpose coincided almost to the episode with the change in actors from mitch ryan to anthony george.i'll forever wonder if the entire direction that the show went into would have turned out completely different if mr.ryan had not left abruptly when he did.

i'm assuming i have IE because i have the purple theme.

i never did get to see that elusive "lightning" theme but this is much better than the default blue.

i never really think of carolyn as being "nice".she certainly didn't start out that way.

she grows over time and can certainly act nice but there's always an air of petulance about her.she's so highly strung that even when she is acting nicely i sense that there is always the danger of someone or something crossing her and her lashing out.

now vicki on the other hand takes "nice" to it's apotheosis.often to dizzying results.maggie starts out spunky but over time becomes similarly nice while never quite reaching the apex(or nadir depending on your viewpoint)of vic.

perhaps it has something to do with nancy barrett's acting style.even when the script calls for carolyn to be good she has a fiestiness about her that doesn't translate to mere "niceness".

gothick,

i love the scene with nicholas blair too.

i must confess to a bit of plagarism here.i believe it is from you that i got the expression "swoonsworthy" that i used in the original post here.it just seemed to sum things up perfectly. ;)

since it appears that we cannot presently include spoilers in our posts could the spoiler icon at least be returned to the choice of message icons?

interesting to see that parallel-time caroyn is having such a fine showing.

i liked her alot too.i liked carolyn most of the time but something about her during the time she was under barnabas' control really amused me.the combination of spoiled heiress/vampire assistant is a winning one.

i just love the cat-and-mouse dynamic with julia.she's definitely julia's equal here in a way that few others ever are.in the same episode as the "cocktails" comment she delivers another priceless line to an about-to-go-off-the-edge julia..."control yourself julia.you must!it's almost dinnertime and you haven't even changed.really julia when you're with us you must live by our rules.".it's just another offhanded line that packs such a punch.

funny thing watching the show a second time around.everything goes by so much faster.my memory of the time that carolyn was under barnanas' control was that it lasted for months.but in fact it was really just a few weeks before the storyline shifts to 1795.

of all the actresses on the show it was nancy barrett who ended up surprising me the most with her versatility.she brought such nuance not only to the different characters she played but also to carolyn during various storylines.

i'm currently watching the late 1967 episodes.here carolyn is under a certain "influence".
i just love her attitude and mannerisms during this period.very different from "regular" carolyn.her scenes with julia are swoonsworthy.the level of cattiness being achieved here is divine.

she speaks one line in particular that is really quite throwaway but her delivery makes it an all-time favorite of mine.upon rather snottily informing julia that she's better change for dinner she says "cocktails in a half hour don't be late".i don't know why but i just adore it!

i think carolyn during this time is my "favorite" carolyn.i enjoy her during most of the other storylines(the exception being during the adam plot when she infuriated me)but here she's the best.

so my question is not who is your favorite nancy barrett character on the show(ie.millicent/charity/leiticia)but which version of carolyn stoddard do you like the most?

« on: May 02, 2007, 12:47:34 AM »
according to the d.s. almanac(and boy is my copy getting dogeared)david henesy spoke the voiceover 3 times.denise nickerson never did(perhaps her voice was too childlike to achieve the proper sense of menace).

joel crothers actually did read it once(which i can't recall).
jonathan frid read it only 12 times!

honorable mention goes to...

nancy barrett-116
joan bennett-74
thayer david-45
grayson hall-156
lara parker-66
kathryn leigh scott-75
david selby-46

alexandra moltke tops out at 387 readings.

well put mysterious.

it certainly was possible for vicki to develop a keen interest the collins family history.especially under the eager tutelage of someone she admired.

as far as her interest in the past being rather limited to the time that josette lived i guess that makes more sense than i thought because i had forgotten that vicki had a long history with josette.

because barnabas takes such total possession of josette upon his arrival it's easy to forget that she was already an established presence that vicki was intimately aquainted with through contacts made during the matthew morgan/laura collins storylines.

lydia makes an interesting point.

the "past" that interests vicki during this part of the show is exclusively the past of josette's time.

around this time she comletely loses interest in the more recent past...say about twenty years earlier...that might have clued her into her own identity.she just waxes nostalgic about josette and gowns and music boxes.

the writers added this characteristic to her sort of out of the blue to fit into this particular plot.during the earlier storylines she doesn't act this way.

at the few fests i've attended most of the fans have been pleasant and well behaved.

however there is invariably at least one person who during the Q&A's has an "edge" that makes me uncomfortable.

hopefully everyone will be nice.
