Current Talk '07 II / i'm doing 1840...finally
« on: September 21, 2007, 06:50:16 PM »
for about four years i had been watching the show sequentially from begining to end...but about a year or so ago i started to get burned out on the whole thing and stopped watching with the "summer of 1970" episodes.

i re-watched a few favorites(laura collins,1795)but i finally decided i was ready for something new and i just bought dvd collection 23 and thus will begin my "journey" to 1840 this weekend.i have always heard very mixed things about this storyline but i'm excited for a new group of sets and characters.

to get "reaquainted" with the storyline leading up to this i watched some of the summer of 1970 episodes this week and was reminded of why i stopped watching with these episodes.the writing was terrible and everyone seemed really worn out.grayson especially seemed exhausted here.

this has been said many times before but both david and hallie were much too old for the storyline.
i wonder why they needed to remain "children"?the storyline could easily have been written with adolescents or teenagers in mind.the business with the playroom, dollhouse and governess were much too babyish for kids that age.

still,as uneven as i'm told 1840 is i'm glad to have new stuff to watch.

i like mayonnaise too.love it it fact!

i usually make my own and it's good.but it has to be fresh.fresh as a daisy to be precise.

as a matter of fact if i order a sandwich and the mayonnaise does not meet my exacting standards than i have no problem sending it back and demanding that a fresh jar be opened.
if this inconveniences the waitress i'm sorry but no amount of protest on her part,no matter what assurances she gives that she just opend the jar that morning, will make me change my mind.if she has a problem with this she can take it up with the firm that made the mayonnnaise.

because let's face it...there is too much evil in this world to be fought than to be sidelined by the cramps, nausea and diarrhea associated with the consumption of rancid mayonnaise. >:D

gothick,

yes dear, according to the trusty d.s. almanac episode 1104 was indeed mrs.johnson's last appearance on the show and alas and alak clarice blackburn's final appearance as well as she was not cast in the 1840 storylines.

i greatly appreciate what ms.blackburn brought to the table as well and her diminishing screen time over the years was a big disappointment for me. :(

here's a cute piece of trivia from the "dark shadows.the first year" book...

those of us familiar with these episodes remember how glacially some of the plotting was paced.

the book broke down the first year on a day-to-day basis and it was actually only fifty-two days between victoria's arrival at collinwood and barnabas' release from his coffin...less than eight weeks by the show's calender.

in other words a single "day" on the show sometimes lasted for weeks as the show was paced early on.vicki's first night at collinwood lasted four episodes and her first full, action filled day, lasted a staggering sixteen episodes!

the bleeder-valve car-crash business all occurs on this one "day".i had forgotten how slowly the show moved in the early days.

what the hell is going on?

there is a tremendous amount of artificiality on the forum today with "psueudo carolyn" in the slideshow and "faux jeremiah"in the watching project.does "fake vicki" appear anywhere in the d.s. universe today?

here's a thought.what if the original actor who portrays a character isn't the one who becomes most closely identified with the role?

can james hall acurately be callled "not willie"?mark allen imitation sam"?george mitchell "ersatz matthew morgan"? :-

what do you think?

Current Talk '07 II / today's slideshow

i'm a bit surprised that mysterious did not take the opportunity to have a bit of fun with the infamous "fake carolyn" episode in today's slideshow(#578).

couldn't she have been identified as "carolyn" or carolyn or perhaps carolyn?

anyways just a thought. ;)

i agree that one of the nice things about these episodes is how because there were so few characters at the begining they all interacted with each other on a daily basis.

later when the cast expands and the storylines become more fragmented the characters interact with only thoses other characters that happen to be involved in that particular plot at the moment.

for instance during the early episodes vicki and carolyn develop an interesting sister type relationship but after 1795 they share very few scenes and that relationship essentially becomes abandoned.most of vicki's scenes are played against jeff.the same thing happens with david(who disappears for much of 1968).she's at collinwood because she's david's governess but after 1795 i don't believe they share one scene ever again.

here everyone interacts with everyone else and i liked that.

Polls Archive / Re: The Original, the Revival, and You -

aside from the monumental task of just getting from begining to end of the original series i have for various reason been somewhat resistant to the 1991 revival...

i'm afraid that one of them, and this is going to sound really stupid and superficial,is that part of what first attracted me to the show was the awsome 1960's fashions and hairstyles.i love them.

but i just don't like fashions from the early 1990's.bush 1,recession-era styles that i find somewhat depressing.even when i see stills from the 91' show the clothes look dumpy.

give me a mini and a fall over a perm and a drop waist any day. :P

i agree.

i love the quentin storyline and 1897 and am even quite fond of leviathan and 1970pt...my comments were specific to the adam storyline.there are just too many monsters and it's just too silly.

2245
i bitched about the 1968 episodes endlessly when i first watched them so i'll try not to repeat myself too much here.

one thing i will say is that with the adam storyline the writers for the first time very actively began to court those proverbial "kids that ran home from school" as it's target audience.the previous three storylines(laura, early barnabas,1795)had supernatual characters at their center but where in many ways plotted like traditional soap operas and with a more adult sensibility.this stuff is extremely adolescent.the tone is shrill, the plotting ridiculous, the pacing off and as has been said it is with these episodes that the show aquires it's "camp" reputation.i also find it terrible the way the original characters are handled here and it's no wonder many of the are gone by year's end.

i said when i first watched them i would never watch them again.i tried to give them a second chance recently thinking i might have softened on them but i haven't.adam stinks as far as i'm concerned.

Calendar Events / Announcements '07 II / Re: A Dark Shadows Cruise?
« on: September 01, 2007, 06:53:18 PM »
last night they aired the agatha christie classic "murder on the orient express" on tcm.

what if instead of a cruise it was a trip on a grand old fashioned train with sleeper cars and the requisite mystery on board?

they have a very nice one that leaves from new york, travels all the way up the new england coastline and ends at niagra falls...i've always wanted to do it but it's quite expensive.it could be glamorous and fun.

2247
funny...

i've seen this particular barnabas/burke scene a hundred times and never thought to read a gay subtext into it...and i can read a gay subtext into just about anything.

to me burke is just a paragon of heterosexuality.

2248
when i first watched these episodes a few years ago i was devastated by the overall change in tone and direction of the show.

now doing a secondary watch it was inevitable that i come to this again and watched several episodes over the weekend...and loathed it just as much as i remember.

there are some dream curse/cassandra/nicholas moments that i can get into but in general i hate 1968 across the boards.being a big fan of both joan and alexandra i agree that they are largely wasted here(although vicki does get some key moments during the dream curse).

i definitely overdose on barnabas and julia here and i hate that the writers let this dumb adam character hijack the entire show for nearly a year. >:(

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / this keeps happening
« on: August 26, 2007, 05:31:45 PM »
for the last few months whenever someone pm's me the entire content of the pm appears in the e-mail notifying me that someone at the board has sent me a message.

has this been happening to anyone else?

so does that mean that this never actually made it to air and it's just some sort of out take?
