i agree that julia's scenes with angelique are nicely done.she has a few early scenes with gerard where he's questioning her true identity that are well played as well.

for me grayson is at ther best when her character is being coy or evasive or operating with some sort of self serving motivation.it brings out the best in her.she also needs a foil to play against which is why i love her opposite nancy barrett in 1967Spoiler:
(when carolyn was under barnabas' control)
or as hoffman in parallel-time when she plays against nearly everyone.she has some genius scenes in 1968 against nicholas blair as well.some duplicitousness on her part is nice.when she's just functioning as barnabas' assisitant it's not so interesting.

perhaps this is just me however...

i was home yesterday and on a lark watched several episodes from the 1897 storyline(which i haven't seen in years).

what i was struck by was how fresh and crisp and energized everyone seemed(including the writers).it seemed as if the show was in an "expansive" period.

to me the 1840 storyline seems like the show in decline.i can't really put my finger on why but it just feels sort of spent.the actors a bit tired.that's how i felt about the storylines after parallel-time and the brief trip to 1995.was everyone just plain exhausted after the movie and the constant change in time period that ran across the 1970 episodes?

jonathan and especially grayson seem really burned out after running aroung like chickens with their heads cut off for the last several months.there's not alot of nuance to their work here.it's like going through the motions...parallel-time was the last time i think grayson must have felt challenged by the scripts and did some of her finest work ever as hoffman...but when she's just screaming "barnabas!!!" all the time it's kind of boring.

without joan bennett in a pivotal role the period lacks for me as well.as the owner of rose cottage flora gets alot of mentions(much like liz late in the series)but not much screen time and little to do with what she got.

not to say that there isn't much to like here but my overall impression is that the whole thing is winding down and everyone knew it.

interesting comment about carolyn...

alot of times there might just be two or three characters that are "pivotal" in a given episode and another one or two characters that sort of "flesh it out"(aren't there generally five characters per episode?).

for awhile in 1967 carolyn seemed a bit adrift without much to do.what happens with her in an upcoming episode gives the character a much needed injection of drive and purpose and gives nancy barrett some of the best material she ever gets on the show in my opinion.

love the r.d. floatie.

if i'm correct here he is in his jeff clark incarnation and has just seen the ghost of reverand trask...which he immediately forgets!

what follows this incident is a jeff/vicki bicker session of epic proportions. [hall2_rolleyes]

i was quite surprised recently when America Online did a poll of television's top eighteen witches and our girl angelique didn't get a mention.

naturally samantha, endora and tabitha from "bewitched" got much deserved nods but most of the other ones i had never even heard of. [devil2]

i have no doubt that quentin...then as now...had no shortage of adult admirers.

but sometimes i do think the writers took storyline shortcuts that they thought kids(as opposed to more discerning adults)wouldn't pick up or care about.this is one of those instances.

i have my own peculiar quirks with the show.vampires and witches i don't question...but mundane things like episode-to-episode plot continuity and well thought out character placement matter big time. [hall2_tongue]

i agree that this is one of those "goosebump" episodes.perfection!

this and the episode(from this same period)where barnabas and julia kill dave woodard are two of the most emotionally powerful ever on the series.it's interesting that they are both black and white kinescope episodes.this used to bother me but now i wonder if perhaps that adds to the bleakness and profound sense of despair of both shows.

what the show has going for it here is something that never again really happens.most of the characters that populate the series here had been with the show from the begining.so the audience had over a year to get to "know" them.that to me added a tremendous amount of suspense to these episodes because i felt in "knew" and "cared" about these people.it was a very emotionally involving time for me.

later on when the show begins to yo-yo back and forth in time and characters come and go one doesn't get the opportunity to build emotional bonds with the characters in the same way.please don't get me wrong...i got a kick out of marie wallace as eve but i didn't "care" about what happened to her in the same way i did about a sweet apple-cheeked waitress who loved her father and her handsome boyfriend and so on...

just my personal two-cents.

they do a few very annoyingly inconsistent things with quentin in 1970...

several people(besides barnabas and julia)do remember the quentin hauntings even though the changed history means he never died.

in one scene shortly after barnabas returns to the present(from 1897)liz comes over and thanks him for whatever he did to rid collinwood of the ghosts and tells him how glad the family is to be back home...meaning that the haunting did take place and the family had in fact moved out of collinwood.

shortly after david spies julia talking to "grant" and immediately equates him with quentin.he's under the leviathan influence at the time and for reasons i can't recall decides to scare amy with grant...and when she sees him she too thinks it's quentin.

then,in a maddening lack of continuity, just a few months later during the gerard hauntings david and quentin carry on as if they had been best friends for years and quentin even remarks about how david had been wanting to borrow his camera(or something of the sort)for "over a year".

the writing for quentin in the present is very, very sloppy and inconsistent.because he had become such a "teen idol" apparently they thought they didn't need to write a plausible storyline for him and the show's adolescent audience would neither notice nor care.

48.when you invite houseguests or hire servants remember that they are primarily there to snoop around and collect information to support their own misguided agendas.

49.no matter how much you've heard about that famous maine lobster when you go to a restaurant the only offerings will be burned coffee, donuts and roast beef sandwiches(watch that mayo!).

50.remember that your brother's wives will always be otherwordly creatures who will hang around for three months, place you into a death-like trance and otherwise cause discomfort before they disappear and are never mentioned again.

51.if you are a woman travelling your only luggage will be a child-sized blue suitcase that in reality would not hold your hairpieces.

i've been watching 1840 and i'm totally noticing that the show plays fast-and-loose with when and where whatever character happens to be doing a bit of time travel does and doesn't recognize a character played by an actor from the "present".

in 1795 of course poor vicki mistakingly recognized everyone she met there as a person she knew in the present...a phenomenon she foolishly called out and which caused her no end of misfortune.

i haven't seen 1897 in awhile so i forget exactly how this played out there.

however when "present time" barnabas shows up in 1840 he does not for instance seem to note in any way that flora looks like elizabeth(or,for that matter, his mother naomi),daniel roger, leiticia carolyn and so on...but he instantly recognizes quentin who isn't even the quentin he knows but one who inexplicably looks and is named the same.both he and julia recognize gerard, roxanne and daphne but no one else.

angelique also notes the resemblance between the trask of 1840 and the one she knew in 1795 but again doesn't equate anyone else she encounters with people she knew in another time

i wonder how the writers came up with who recognized who?

i agree that with the reddish-brown hair and bangs "vicki" looks a bit "maggie-ish".the hairdresser should have gone for a black fall...but i still think they got the spirit of the whole thing spot on!

i'm with gothick.my favorite shot is "vicki" and "angelique" on the sofa...the model playing vicki is totally giving angelique that suspicious glance she often gave to ang as cassandra.love it!

it's way too cool to cry "foul".

"bust" is a women's magazine(not a fanzine)and the photo shoot was intended to illustrate women's fashions.

even "barnabas" serves almost as window dressing and only appears in two pictures."roger" and "quentin" would have been superfluous and the clothing is too girlish for "julia" and "liz"(no tweed suits featured).

just have fun with it. [hall2_tongue]

i just bought a copy.what an unexpected treat.love it!

the photographer and stylist totally knew their shiz.

needless to say "vicki" is in a sleeveless(although the model is a bit chunky).also**spoiler**the stylist totally had to have seen the episode where barnabas bites vicki in her room because she was wearing a chiffon nightgown with puffy sleeves and a bow in her hair(although on the show she was in orange and here it's pink).

with her blond updo and minidresses "angelique" looks most like ang in 1970 as mrs. sky rumson.gorgeous!

she got the flat shoes right too.

i so love the tag line for the layout..."for gothically good fashion, just add soap."!

to get into the supernatural element of d.s. one obviously has to suspend disbelief...

but i think on an emotional level it works better when the writing approached the characters in understandable human terms.

contrast barnabas' relationship with roxanne to the earlier storyline of his relationship with vicki.
they meet, they talk, they're interested in similar things, they forge a friendship and the whole plot develops over a period of several months and the viewer has the opportunity to become emotionally invested in how it plays out.

with roxanne we're just asked to accept it and care about it without any insight into why the attraction exists(other than roxanne being pretty)or any time for the relationship to develop.for me that's very hard to care about.the supernatural stuff works better when anchored by true human emotions.

again i think that's why barnabas' relationships with julia and angelique are much more interesting than the one he has with roxanne.
