Current Talk '08 I / Re: 1970 Parallel Time....not so bad after all.

because they are the last storylines set in the "present" i always think of leviathan,1970PT and the 'summer of 1970' as something of a "triptych" with SO1970 being the weakest link.

but because i prefer in general the parts of the show set in the present i have quite a fondness for leviathan and parallel-time despite their many weaknesses.they're both deeply flawed but created an original atmosphere that i found to be quite captivating.

thanks.i plan to hit the strand tommorrow.

one more thing about this.during the director's commentary paul morrisey claims that candy favored joan bennett and kim novak above all others and tried to affect their mannerisms.

given that, and that julia99 knows candy was a great fan of grayson hall's,i know she must have been a big d.s. watcher as well.

i believe it's been discussed here before that d.s. went over big with the "factory" crowd.

gothick,

i spent the rest of the day searching every bookstore in new york for the book/dvd combo on jackie curtis you speak of to no avail.i might have to special order it.

from the numerous accounts i've read on warhol's transvestite trio candy darling was the one who most wanted to "pass"('she' went so far as to carry tampons in 'her' purse)as a real woman.

curtis and woodlawn could not have been so delusional.their personal style was groundbreaking, evolving from glam to punk, continuing to inspire fashion designers, artists and drag queens to this day...

but they could not possibly have though that they "passed".

last night i watched the andy warhol film "women in revolt" starring the holy trinity of his drag 'superstars' jackie curtis, holly woodlawn and candy darling.

the plot as usual with warhol films is ridiculous.it's 'about' these three 'ladies' and their forays into the early seventies "women's lib movement" and as usual for warhol films it was largely ad-libbed but for a few scetchy outlines provided for the actors.

it's a real scream.but anyways there is a scene where candy goes on an audition('she' wants to be movie star)and 'she' recites some dialogue from "scarlet street" starring joan bennett.then,in an even funnier ad-libbed moment, the person interviewing her asks her if she has an agent and candy keeps repeating that joan bennett is her agent!

the scene,and the movie,had me howling.watch it!

shoeprints on an ohrbach's sleeveless???

love it!

again both burke and jeff were bossy, domineering jerks but in a strange way i think that they were supposed to represent 'us' the viewer in that they knew the score with barnabas and vicki,as we the viewer did, where as everyone else on the show including vicki persisited with the ridiculous notion that barnabas was just a kindly older gentlman who saw her as a "friend" and couldn't possibly have other motives in mind.

at numerous points they were right that barnabas did indeed pose a serious threat.

true that vicki was indeed kidnapee numero uno...

but we also have maggie locked-up by barnabas, carolyn by adam and so on.a locked up ingenue was a major, major theme on the show.

but,yes,vicki was the queen.  [ghost_rolleyes]

true that both burke and jeff were domineering "jerks" where vicki was concerned but lest we forget that in terms of barnabas they were both actually also 100% right.

burke had strong objections about vicki spending alot of time around the old house and barnabas...and there was a coffin with her name on it sitting in the basement!

once jeff entered the picture barnabas no longer posed the sort of eminent threat he once did to vicki but he was perhaps right in that he'd prefer his girlfriend not spend too much time with a jilted ex-fiance who obviously still had designs on her.

on vicki's end it was just "friendship" with barnabas but we know that he didn't return that sentiment.vicki did indeed date jerks-all-around but they were right on this point.

thirteen episodes simply was not nearly enough to try and cover they amount of storyline they tried to cram in.

one can blame the "suits" at nbc ad nauseum but it since most of them were probably not familiar with the story dan curtis and company are in part to blame for even trying to get into the 1790 period during the time allotted.

they would have been better served by devoting the first season in it's entirety to establishing the present time situation and devoting much of season two to the 1790 segment.

Current Talk '08 I / kls' voiceovers
« on: May 27, 2008, 02:53:46 AM »
i was watching an episode where kathryn leigh scott recited the opening voiceover.for a second i didn't recognize her voice("...paging doctor get-a-life...").

anywho this has happened before.i think that perhaps miss scott spoke the voiceover using her own speaking voice rather than speaking as "maggie" who used a slightly higher, more girlish pitch.

has anyone notied this with her or other actors?

speaking of that 1968 photo does anyone know why joan bennett, alexandra moltke, joel crothers, roger davis and david henesy were not included in it?

they were all prominently featured during that period.

i think liz and jason's aborted wedding episode had nine...

liz, jason, carolyn, vicki, roger, burke, joe, reverend brand and the blue whale bartender.

there was also an episode at the end of the eve storyline/start of the chris jennings storyline that has alot.if i recall adam, eve, angelique, jeff, vicki, julia, joe, chris jennings and a nurse all appeared in this episode.i could be wrong or maybe i'm forgetting someone but i remember being struck by how many characters were in this episode.

so true mysterious...

i've always been appreciative of the show's costuming(tweed suits, ugly shoes and all).as i opened this post that maggie arrived in kid gloves was so creamy.

but i do think that as an afternoon drama, with advertisers of such housewife friendly products as toothpaste and laundry detergent, the producers made a decision to attire the girls like proper young ladies rather than 'hippies' or members of the counter culture percolating at the time.

It would be so appropriate as a female guest to be served tea or coffee in the drawing room.  I'm sure Vicki was called upon to serve tea to the guests on occasion and she probably felt special being asked to do so by Liz.   [ghost_happy]

as outrageous as the show became plotwise it was nothing if not always observant of the social niceties.

i always like scenes between alexandra and kathryn.they seemed like real friends.

back to those shoes...it was invariably that squat heel.the show's costumers ignored some of the more outre' fashions of the late 1960's like textured stockings and white 'go-go' boots.it was always a sheer worn with that shoe.in this way the girls were a bit 'square'.
