am i the only one who thinks it's kind of funny that gerard and i are both gay men infatuated with collinwood's high-hemmed ingenue governesses? [ghost_rolleyes]

anywho,i much prefer vicki and maggie as separate characters with separate storylines.

i never really go for the "magtoria wintevens" composite character.maggie was never intended to be collinwood governess.she was brought over because alexandra moltke very abruptly left the show in the middle of her contract.it was just happenstance.

but by the time of HODS kathryn leigh scott was ensconsed as the resident damsel-in-distress so there was no need to get into the backstory of either character.thus we get the "magtoria" compromise.

that said i hope that there's a role for both pivotal characters in the film.

in the fest topics i was surprised to read that lara was 30 when she joined the series.
"angelique" seemed like a much younger girl(despite being 200 years old).

i recall in 1795 that vicki tells the countess dupres during some sort of inquisition that she was 22 years old.

burke, barnabas and roger always seemed "middle aged" to me even though they were supposed to be younger.

needless to say i vote for vicki as well...

i love kls' early maggie as well but can never really get into her as collinwood governess later on.

i found leiticia to be somewhat campy and unsubtle and just sort of a knockoff of nancy's popular "pansity" character from 1897.

perhaps it's just that i'm not that fond of the 1840 storyline in general.

given the two hour time frame of a cinematic feature the number of supporting characters will indeed need to be limited.

which of course begs the question as to who will figure as the story's central ingenue...victoria or maggie.

this oscillated depending on what version of things was being played.both characters were depicted as having been josette's reincarnation in different versions.

indeed carolyn gyrating at the blue whale was a great introduction to the character.it's an image that will be burned onto my retina forever.

i always loved the spoiled and petulant carolyn of the 1966 episodes and adored her catty,mean-spirited turn as vampire assistant in 1967.

but,as has been suggested here,my respect for nancy barrett as a great actress grew exponentially with the 1970 parallel-time storyline as well as the 1995 episodes.she was very moving in both sequences.

nancy said in one of the books that she had played eight characters by the time the series ended.i can only count six:carolyn,millicent,charity,pt-carolyn,leiticia(her only portrayal i disliked)and melanie.is she counting 1995 as being a separate character perhaps?

oh mysterious you're killing me!

i didn't know any of the d.s. actresses had publicly expressed any political views one way or the other.

give us a hint!

sometimes i forget that after the series had fully embraced the supernatural with the laura collins storyline that for several weeks it actually returned to "regular" soap opera storytelling before the introduction of barnabas.

i often think of one storyline leading directly to the other but these episodes deal with the conclusion of the burke devlin manslaughter plot and the introduction of the jason mcquire blackmail storyline.after laura i recall finding these episodes slightly odd when just a few months earlier there were totally within the show's original context.i also thought the devlin story was wrapped up rather hastily in just a few episodes.i got the impression they knew the series was about to go off in a totally new direction and they just wanted to tie this up.

here we also, for all too brief a moment, meet the lovely lovelady powell.

i think grayson was perhaps what was once described as being a "handsome" woman and i find her to be quite striking.

after they discarded the ghastly wig from the "miss hoffman" period i think that they actually made julia look quite chic.the cropped, copper colored hair, the false eyelashes, the gloves, the suits, the jewelry.i'd say the show's costumers attempted to make julia look competent and sophisticated.

it's only with today's eyes, when middle aged women run around dressed like teenagers, that she can come across as "dowdy".

some of my favorite scenes are the nights of 1967.

julia is working late at the old house and she and barnabas engage in some delicious cat-and-mouse dialogue.
i just love it.so if not necessarily "enemies" i prefer them at least in some way conflicted.it's more complex and interesting to me than when she's sort of functioning as his assistant and time travel companion.

i haven't seen this episode in a very long time but if i recall vicki actually has no dialogue in it.she simply lies in bed "unconscious" while others act around her.

now i always thought alexandra moltke underplayed nicely.her placid acting style a nice counterpoint to her more over the top costars.but around this time, and being perhaps this board's chief alexandra moltke aficionado,i started to notice that she turned in an even more "bland" performance.she phones it in.it seems obvious to me that something in her personal or professional life was off and i know this was around the time she wanted out of the show.

did anyone else notice this downturn in her performance here?

2022
i'm also a fan of this often maligned storyline.

i appreciated barnabas' return to evil ways and more than that his antagonistic relationship with julia in the early episodes.it was fun to see them squabbling again.

it was very creepy and atmospheric and i loved the antique shop set.in general i'm also quite fond of storylines set in the "present" more than the past.

but yeah the vicki and peter thing was unnecessarily infuriating and by the end it was that kitchen sink storytelling that the show often falls prey to but the first two thirds or so were quite compelling.

i fell the same way...

the laura collins story is ne plus ultra as far as i'm concerned.

and this is how i started the series.from episode one.i'm very glad i did because during that first year i feel as if i really got to "know" characters who during the full onset of the barnabas years don't get much character development but become more blank slates for whatever supernatural occurrence is at hand.

2024
do i even have to answer this question? [love10]

i hear you lydia...

there is perhaps no other period on the show other than 1968 where there are entire episodes or even blocks of episodes full of characters and situations i didn't like.this period was designed for the fast foreward button with adam being it's chief recipient in my house.

i watched this part of the show through once to get through it and on to the next but i'm very selective about rewatching it.certain episodes i like and i simply don't watch the rest.even a peek at the cast list in the almanac helps me decide if an episode is worth a look.
