the "condo" plot sounds so suspenseful!  [ghost_rolleyes]

what they achieve so brilliantly, and with such amazing accuracy, is the ordinary, suburban, basement "rec room" 80s.

it's not some slick "Wall Street" 80s or glossy "Dynasty" 80s or cool "new wave" 80s or any of the usual references.

i lived the life those kids lived (minus, of course, alternate universes, faceless monsters, government conspiracies, and so forth...). we had so much freedom then. kids weren't coddled and overprotected. you just got on your bike and took off for the day until mom called you home for dinner. it was a different world they captured perfectly.

i'm four episodes in...

if you grew up in the 80s (as i did.) this is a MUST. the costuming and atmosphere is so spot on it freaked me out. 1983 is not a moment that's referenced much in film.

although it's an original story there's an uncanny sense of deja-vu to it. films from the late 70s/early 80s like 'ET', 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', 'Poltergeist', 'War Games', and 'the Goonies' are heavily referenced in tone. it's sort of an homage.

it's really worth a look.

at the time television in general, and soap opera in particular, were an inherently "square" genre...

nearly all stabs at depicting the "counterculture" fell embarrassingly flat. Shaw's "hippy astrologer" was wincingly bad.  [ghost_rolleyes]

when i first joined the fandom in the early aughts the 91 revival was the hot button, toxic subject.

i think it's been reevaluated in the years since the movie particularly because it was so darn serious. it wasn't a "comedy" which is what a disproportionate number of fans still erroneously label the film.

it's not so bad "by comparison".

whatever planned or hoped for "synergies" between the OS and the film have long since fizzled out.

JP knows it's a toxic subject better left unaddressed.

it could be noted that at the fest there was not a single reference to the film in any way. no merchandise. nothing...

it simply does not exist to most fans.

first season Vanessa was insanely self sufficient. she kicked ass and took names...

i understand the need to create the powerful love story for the character but with season two she needed too much "saving". too much "rescuing" from Ethan and the other men on the show. it gave her a note of the "damsel in distress" which was decidedly NOT the original premise of the character.

It was a plotline linking Vanessa with a demonic Egyptian Goddess Amunet (the lore about this figure was completely made up so far as I am aware).  Her full manifestation on Earth was to usher in a new apocalyptic age.  The storyline was dropped abruptly at some point during season 1 and I don't think it was ever mentioned again.

the fallout (or at least the "morning after" awkwardness) of Ethan and Dorian's incendiary, Absinthe induced hookup, was never adressed either.

not even a shame walk.  [ghost_rolleyes]

thanks. i completely forgot about that...

i haven't seen the third season yet but it sounds like Vanessa was in full victimization mode again. i was not happy or comfortable with the direction they took the character in season two. she was too weak and disempowered.

if the point was to showcase Green's ability to chew the scenery to shreds job well done. but i missed the glamorous, mysterious, powerful figure she was one season one.

FYI the first two seasons just popped up unexpectedly on Netflix. it's never been streamed there before.

it will likely be several months before season 3 arrives.

in terms of Lara/Angelique there simply might have been no role for her during this period...

something about the nature of the character prevented her from becoming an ordinary day-to-day character. the "dramatic impact" came from her "disappearing" for extended periods of time and then popping up later in some different guise much to everyone's "shock".

in one of the PomPress book they do a countdown of each character's appearances and, for all of her significance, Angelique/Lara appears in surprisingly few episodes for this reason.

Technically, there was no real dealer's room. Celebrities, MPI, fan dealers and the like were all lined up against the interior corridor walls. It was very difficult to sometimes get to the particular table that you wanted. My friend Helen got very limited traffic because she was at the very end of the corridor.

there was that room to the left that served as more of a dealers' room. i moved in and out freely all day. one was not trapped in the line situation as with the celebrity and MPI setups.

the venue was nicer than it's been in some past years but one big gripe i had was with the positioning of the MPI tables...

rather than being set up separately or in the main dealers' room as in the past they were inexplicably positioned in the middle of the autograph lines...

so if one wanted to make a simple purchase they had to get in a line of hundreds while they waited for autographs and often spent several minutes chatting with the actor and checking out their offerings. i actually "ducked in" during a break in the line and made a quick purchase and left before the person behind me moved forward.

it was beyond weird. even the MPI team were frustrated by the inefficiency.  [ghost_tongue]
