i don't know much about the technical side of the program but i've always had an image in my mind of the recording of the voiceover.

perhaps the actor just recites it just before the episode itself begins filming...

but i've always pictured it as being recorded separately.i can see the actor or actress sitting in a sound booth "out of character",in their street clothes, unmade up,with a big set of headphones on reading it from the script.

they read this as "themselves" then go to hair and makeup and wardrobe and get "in character" for the episode itself to be taped.

i don't know why but this has always been my image of it.

in both versions of the show vicki's notion that she had been sent back for a "purpose" is oddly self delusional considering what happens.

she prevents virtually none of the disasters, gets herself into boatloads of trouble in the process of doing nothing, and alerts angelique to the presence of barnabas in the future thus paving the way for all the trouble she will cause there.

she's not much help. [hall2_undecided]

Current Talk '08 II / Re: DS VS Star Trek? Why So Little Respect For DS?

i agree...

the serialized format of the show makes it difficult to watch casually.for it to make sense it needs to followed regularly and watched sequentially.that takes alot of commitment.a standalone episode of a show like 'star trek' can be watched in any order desired with alot more flexibility.

on another note i'm frankly glad that the series hasn't been spun-off into a "world" of cheap, syndicated, fantasy junk that litters the saturday afternoon television schedule and exists as something of a perfect time capsule.

not that i wouldn't welcome a new version.

i must say that i'm surprised at how badly this "watching project" has deteriorated...

it was first announced to great enthusiasm and yet this week the only two people who posted, lydia and myself, are not exactly "fans" in particular.

weren't there supposed to be lots of people here who "loved" this version of the show?

midnite thanks so much for thinking about me...

i watched the episode in question and unfortunately my hairpiece detecting prowess could not come up with a definitive conclusion.it could be a piece.it's so neat,so tidy, but i can't be sure.

with the quentin storyline however liz make the decisive move from beehive to pageboy.

included in dvd collection twelve(which this episode is on)the collector's postcard is a picture of liz(wearing this hairdo)and maggie at collinwood.i wonder if this was from a series of early 1969 publicity shots generated to "introduce" maggie as collinwood governess.

i was always a fan of the kitchen/breakfast room and that funky greenhouse area.

wouldn't it have been cool for it to have made a reappearance with barnabas at the table sipping coffee during this era.

OUCH!

lydia...i don't believe that i've ever heard of the deified josette collins referred to exactly as a "tiresomely hysterical slut".

you might receive some death threats...but it's still kind of funny.

i liked the scene with victoria and josette at the jail.they really seemed like some sort of spiritual soul sisters.

i'll admit it.the scene where barnabas rises in the mausoleum for the first time as a vampire was chill inducing.he seemed simultaneously perplexed by his new state and also possessed by a lust for blood.well done.this series can rise above the camp standards it sometimes falls prey to and this scene illustrates that.

was the idea all along to make millicent as unsympathetic as possible so we wouldn't care when she bought the farm?

in the "present" barnabas has become rather suave so it's fascinating to see his first rise as a hissing, snarling animal.it's the character at it's basest.

the way millicent reacted to barnabas here was exactly the same way carolyn did when she saw barnabas as an old man in the present.
this whole scene...barnabas attacking millicent, his encounter with angelique and his shock at what he had become was very well done and packed alot of emotional punch.again the series sort of rising above it's own standards and becoming something better.

i don't know much about this kind of story but it seems to go without saying that if you are a cockney-accented,dockside prostitute you might as well have been born with an expiration date stamped onto your forehead.your rocking chair years will not be happening.but didn't barnabas just feed?

this character gave me a bit of deja vu.a character introduced out of nowhere for the distinct purpose of being instantly killed off...the white trash couple from episode one!

speaking of the white trash couple here we see barnabs's clumsy origins of attacking poor people five feet away from the door of a crowded saloon.it's disturbing to know that two hundred years hence he will be no more discreet.

i don't know the gentlemanly way that one dealt with crazy old spinsters in the eighteenth century but if were joshua collins i would have packed my sister off to a nuthouse long ago.

josette dodges a bullet but poor millicent.

the scene with joe and sheriff patterson was dumb.it only served the old cliche that small town law enforcement are a bunch of yokels who will drag their feet in "protocol" and the need for "evidence" while crimes continue unabated until some local yahoo takes matters into his own hands.

here we have a sheriff that actually know about vampires, has valid information about who that might be,and he huffs about propriety.the grand dame stuff about "what will elizabeth think?" was stupid.like this costume party throwing old lady needs to taken into consideration when uncovering a major crime.this might have made sense on paper but since they didn't bother to fill out the liz character or give her a storyline or even explain exactly what her family does in this town it really doesn't make sense.

the ending scene with josette succumbing to barnabas was a real shock.

yes i was very glad that we got to see vicki in her wedding gown, and her wonderfully warm scenes with elizabeth, before alexandra left the series.these episodes just wouldn't have been the same with one of the other actresses in the role.

she did look breathtaking. [hall2_kiss]

i was watching "the young and the restless" today and a major character had "died"(no she's not really dead but that's beside the point)and as is their wont in soap operas for the funeral(as they do for weddings)cast members past and present come out of the woodwork.

among the many mourners was julianna mcarthy a.k.a. mrs.johnson/abigail collins in the 1991 series.i'm not sure who she plays(i don't think she's presently an active castmember)but she was there.

if anyone's intersted maybe she's on it again this week.

ye olde colonial funeral...

i know that we're supposed to be caught up in the grand sweep of the whole thing but josette's overblown graveside histrionics are hard to take seriously...she was married to jeremiah for a day.

i really,really hate abigail.

they say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and here angelique proves that in spades.i find lysette anthony to be one of the more enjoyable parts of this tale.in the scene where she comes to barnabas' room(on her knees!)however she comes across as crude and slatternly and boy does she work alot of cleavage for an eighteenth century servant.

if i had been joshua collins i would have trounced the entire sorry dupres lot out on their asses.why are they still at collinwood?

so jeremiah has risen as a zombie huh.i thought his scene with josette was quite effective.

i like that barnabas and natalie are wise to ang.however natalie's jewelry is too over the top.it looks cheap and fake.

i was really liking barbara blackburn in the present.millicent is sort of a wasted opportunity.her stabs at comic relief are out of sync with the tone of everything else.

the scenes set in the here and now are one of the more effective plot devices of this series.it keeps us connected to the present.i had forgotten about the second seance and that barnabas and carolyn were still in cahoots.but i have had it with liz's wide pleat slacks.

why doesn't maggie have a 1790 counterpart?everyone else does.surely they could have found a suitable tid-bit for ely pouget.

the scene with josette attacking barnabas was extremely shocking even if she does just turn out to be a bat.

good episode.

i like that reason lydia...

i'm on the fence with this series too but i like the "project" part of it.lots of people were on board and now hardly anyone posts.

i'll post my review later when i have a bit of time.

yes the "gloria winters" gaffe is one of the series more notable ones.

it was featured in the slideshow a couple of days ago.

if i recall marie wallace saves the scene.

mysterious' outline for season two does sound quite intriguing...

i've never been a big quentin fan but would loved to have seen the laura character on the front burner.

the breadth of this story needs breathing room.that's why i found season one to be so rushed.in the original series the 1795 plot was a rich tapestry woven with colorful supporting characters and interesting subplots.i simply don't think it could have been told effectively in just six episodes.

i find it quite astonishing that they were already planning to get into the quentin storyline in season two(after a six episode season one).

talk about a rush job.

this doesn't really leave the series with alot of places to go.the storylines that came after quentin/1897...leviathan,parallel-time,1840...are widely considered to be uneven at best and it's doubtful that curtis would have persued them had the 91 series progressed.so why rush through the best parts of the story?

i think dan curtis was really rushing through his "greatest hits" at the expense of crafting a well thought out series.i can only assume he did this to entertain himself and please fans of the original who expected to see all of this stuff up front....the elusive millions of new viewers needed for a show to succeed doesn't know who any of these characters are.

i think it would have been a much better show if plotted more judiciously.
